Wonder Woman

Last week being what it was in terms of my workload, particularly thanks to Netflix’s Marvel’s Luke Cage, I didn’t have time to do Weekly Wonder Woman last week, not even on Wonder Woman Wednesday. But WWW is back this week, albeit on another day dedicated to a god of war (Týr Tuesday, anyone?). 

In terms of comics, not much got added to the pile last week – just issue #6 of Justice League (Rebirth), which started off a new storyline in which all the various superheroes and superheroines start off a bit frightened because they’re fighting fear:

Anyway, it’s mostly all about the two Green Lanterns, particularly Lady Lantern (NB not her real name) who asks the Flash out on a date. Except things don’t quite go as planned as maybe some of the fear they were fighting got stuck inside everyone…

Not much Diana in the issue, since she and Aquaman go off to have a chat about halfway through and aren’t seen again.

Ironically, in the real world, a lot more has been going on with our Wondy. Filming on Justice League has just finished in the UK and director Zack Snyder posted this behind-the-scenes video on the last day. You may recognised a certain superheroine.

Meanwhile, production began last week on Professor Marston & The Wonder Women, a biopic about Wonder Woman creator William Moulton Marston directed by Angela Robinson and starring Luke Evans as Marston, Rebecca Hall as his wife and Wondy co-creator Elizabeth, and Bella Heathcote as their muse/lover Olive Byrne.

On an obviously completely unrelated subject, current Wonder Woman writer Greg Rucka caused a bit of a stir not so long ago by declaring that Diana has always been bisexual, something that pleased current Batwoman author Marguerite Bennett no end, even though it’s not exactly new to anyone who’s been paying attention for the past few decades…

There’s also going to be a set of Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor statues based on next year’s movie:

Hot on the heels of the news that there’s going to be a Bionic Woman/Wonder Woman crossover comic in December, we also heard that there’s going to be a Batman/Wonder Woman comic crossover launching digitally on November 23rd. 

But I’ve saved the best for last. There’s going to be a Snickers tie-in with Justice League. How psyched are you for that?

When you’ve finished digesting that news, after the jump is what we should have been looking at around this time last week: Wonder Woman (Rebirth) #3, #5 and #7. And although she didn’t figure in the most recent issues, we can use the time to play catch-up with Action Comics #960-962, which featured a certain Amazon princess/queen (exact current Rebirth status currently undetermined).

I was aiming for Monday, I honestly was, but here we are again on Wonder Woman Wednesday thanks to tele and work – you know, my usual litany of excuses. Anyway, usual catch-up rules because of my August holiday break: I’ll update you on what’s been happening in all the issues I missed, but only with the titles that were out last week. Also, no mentioning of today’s new releases because spoilers.

That means that this week, it’s a recap of all that’s been going on in Justice League (Rebirth) #2-5, as well as a look at new title Trinity #1. Well, Trinity (Rebirth) #1 technically, but since there hasn’t been a Trinity title in ages and ages, we’ll just gloss over that wrinkle.

All that after the break, but I should probably mention that our Diana also needed a helping hand from Superman last week in Superman #7. She didn’t ask and she wasn’t the only one, but helped he did. 

Turns out that Paris thing was a ruse of Greg Rucka, unless Diana was back in London to pick up her things or something.

Welcome back to Weekly Wonder Woman, which this week and for one week only happens to fall on Wonder Woman Wednesday. 

It’s been a while, hasn’t it? Sorry about that, but holidays, work and TV have all got in the way. Fingers crossed, though, we’re back on track now. We might even be weekly again. Wouldn’t that be something?

In WWW’s absence, things have happened, of course. She’s been set to feature on four US postal stamps from October 7:

The first trailer for the new Justice League cartoon, Justice League Action, has been released:

As has one for the video game sequel to ‘Injustice: Gods Among Us’, which features Diana as well:

A photo for the live action Justice League has also been released. Superman’s in it – did you see that coming?

Wonder Woman artist Liam Sharp has signed exclusively with DC. We’ve learnt there’s going to be a Wonder Woman crossover with The Bionic Woman in Wonder Woman ’77 in December that includes art by Alex Ross…

…and that the forthcoming NBC show Powers (I’ll review it when it airs, folks) will also involve Wonder Woman peripherally, at least. 

You could also have learnt to draw Wonder Woman the Ivan Reis way at DC Art Academy.

See what happens if you go away for a bit? Madness, that’s what. Madness.

Of course, the previous two months have also seen an awful lot of comics featuring our Diana. There’s literally no way I could cover all of them today without taking all of today to write WWW, so I’m going to do what I did last year and recap the missing issues of each title once the latest issue of that title is out in the forthcoming weeks.

In the case of Wonder Woman, I’m also going to break down the recaps between the two different storylines. And on top of that, despite the fact that there are new issues out today featuring Wondy, I’m only going to look at the titles that were out last week, otherwise I’ll not have anything to look at next week.

Once you’ve done all your back-of-a-fag-packet math with that algorithm, you’ll see that after the jump, I’ll be looking at Wonder Woman (Rebirth) #4 and #6, as well as Wonder Woman ’77 #21-27. Well, I might cheat with the latter ones.

It’s the last Weekly Wonder Woman for at least a month now, I’m afraid, as I’m away on my usual August break. Sorry about that, but vacations are so, so necessary.

I don’t think I’ll be missing much in my coverage, at least in terms of comics, since despite the launch of DC Rebirth, Wonder Woman going bi-monthly and her 75th birthday, there’s not been much for me to cover of late. Okay, so in the past week, Lego has done that nice 75th birthday tribute shot above, which takes in everything from Wondy’s heady Volume 1 days fighting the Nazis through her TV series, her adventures with the Justice League, her nu52 showdown with Darkseid to Batman v Superman (Nice Ares, by the way).

DC’s done a similar thing themselves this week, showing us Wonder Woman through the ages:

There’s also been quite a bit about next year’s Wonder Woman, including a synopsis:

Wonder Woman hits movie theaters around the world next summer when Gal Gadot returns as the title character in the epic action adventure from director Patty Jenkins. Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers…and her true destiny.

Joining Gadot in the international cast are Chris Pine, Connie Nielsen, Robin Wright, David Thewlis, Danny Huston, Elena Anaya, Ewen Bremner and Saïd Taghmaoui. Jenkins directs the film from a screenplay by Allan Heinberg and Geoff Johns, story by Zack Snyder & Allan Heinberg, based on characters from DC Entertainment. Wonder Woman was created by William Moulton Marston. The film is produced by Charles Roven, Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder and Richard Suckle, with Rebecca Roven, Stephen Jones, Wesley Coller and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers. Warner Bros. Pictures presents, in association with RatPac-Dune Entertainment, an Atlas Entertainment/Cruel and Unusual production, “Wonder Woman.” The film is scheduled for release on June 2, 2017, and will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

No mention of her being a goddess or anything, but it’s a synopsis. There’s also been a lot of chat about who’s actually written the movie. We’ve had some new pictures, including one with Chris Pine as Steve Trevor with Gal Gadot:

Both Gadot and Pine will be at this year’s ComicCon, incidentally, where DC has all manner of things planned for Wondy’s 75th – you can even have your photo taken in the cockpit of her invisible jet, apparently. Hmm…

And Batman V Superman: Ultimate Edition has also been released in the UK on download (Blu-ray release date: 1 August). As well as a few precious extra bits of footage involving Diana – largely involving her hacking up Doomsday and all of which can be seen in this shoddily edited video…

…there’s a couple of featurettes about our Di. The first is a surprisingly good look over her 75th years in comics and on TV, featuring the likes of Phil Jimenez, Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang.

The second is more about the movie Wonder Woman, particularly how they designed her costume. Intriguingly, it also confirms that this Wonder Woman is immortal and 3,000 years old; it also features some new footage from Wonder Woman. Take a look while you still can or go and buy it:

But apart from that, it’s been quiet. She almost appeared in Action Comics #959… but we’re just going to have to wait until next month for her rematch with Doomsday.

That means we only had Wonder Woman (Rebirth) #2 to peruse. What happened in #1? Well, you could read last week’s review or you could watch this DC recap video. Apparently that’s a thing now.

Unfortunately, it’ll be no help in telling you what happens in #2 as odd- and even-numbered issues are following completely different storylines with different artists. One day they’ll converge… just not yet. More on that after the jump when we discuss ‘Wonder Woman: Year One’!

I know, I know. It’s been a while. It’s always been a while, these days. But to be fair, despite all the general turmoil that is ‘Rebirth’, things have been quite quiet in the comics world for our Diana over the past few weeks, so I’m not horribly behind.

There has been movie news, of course. Licensing Expo 2016 has revealed all manner of costumes and props from next year’s movie; there have been Justice League set visits, with details of what the Amazons will be like, as well the fact that Wonder Woman will get a spear and her armour may get its red colour from congealed blood (do they not have Vanish on Themyscira?). Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Ultimate Edition has been released in the US and there’s a new trailer for that, too, with a bit more fight from our Diana.

But there’s also been comics news. You may remember the recent, long-running, very tedious ‘Savage Dawn‘ storyline that ultimately led to the death of nu52 Superman. Somewhat weirdly, two additional comics were supposed to be part of that storyline: Superman-Wonder Woman #30-31. Except they never got published in the big scramble to get Rebirth out the door. But now they’re going to be included in the collected ‘Savage Dawn’ graphic novel. What’s in them? Who knows.

And current Wonder Woman artist Liam Sharp is also interviewed in DC All-Access, where it’s revealed that the likes of Ares and Dr Psycho will be showing up, reimagined, at some point in the forseeable future. And that Wonder Woman is currently 28 years old. You hear that, Geoff Johns? How comes she’s as old as Grail then?

After the jump, I’ll be looking at Diana’s main appearances in comics over the past few weeks: Wonder Woman (Rebirth) #1 and Justice League: Rebirth #1. But I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out before then that Justice League #52 saw Diana a bit miffed (but no more than that) that Lex Luthor not only is wearing Superman’s symbol, he’s also bought the Daily Planet purely so he can own nu52 Superman’s cape.

Meanwhile, alternative Diana and alternative, slightly power-mad Superman aren’t getting along very well over in the Injustice: Gods Amongst Us: Year Five #27. But at least they’re getting on better than he and Flash are getting on.

And another alternative Diana popped up in Dark Knight III #5 to pass a bloody comment on Brexit.

I’m guessing she’ll argue that Queen In Parliament requires an Act to be passed before Article 50 can be triggered. But I might be reading into it too much.
