No reviews. Sorry. Usual excuses – and it’s going to be worse next week, since I’m on holiday because it’s Half Term, which means WHYBW will be taking a break next week, too.

But I have been watching TV, I promise. And I will be watching more…

There’s actually not too much coming up in terms of new shows for me to review. Netflix has limited series The Queen’s Gambit, which I might try. But HBO’s The Undoing, which airs on Sunday in the US, is going to be on Sky Atlantic on Monday, so there’s nothing for me to do there, I suspect.

Otherwise, the second season of The Mandalorian starts on October 30, but that’s about it. Probably a good time for us all to have holidays, then.…

What TMINE has been watching

The regulars list is starting to dwindle again. After the jump, reviews of the latest episodes I’ve watched of neXt, The Right Stuff, Tehran and Warrior, the season finale of Criminal (UK), as well as the first episodes of new Canadian show Trickster and the latest Marvel comics adaptation Helstrom.

However, at least one of those is for the chop. Can you guess which one?

What have you been watching? Including Connecting… and The Right Stuff

Feast and famine, hey? One minute there’s nothing to watch, the next minute we’re drowning in shows. Yet again, though, I’ve failed to review anything and WHYBW is on Thursday again, but I have at least watched lots. We can talk about that in a mo…

CBC’s Trickster

Next on TMINE

Tomorrow will see the return of Covideodrome with The Gentlemen (2019). I’ll also be casting an eye over Trickster (Canada: CBC; UK: Syfy) and maybe even The Haunting of Bly Manor at some point in the next week. I might even play catch up and give Amazon’s Utopia remake a gander.

Meanwhile, Star Trek: Discovery is back today in the US, although whether I’ll watch it is very much up to Lovely Wife, since I’m inclined not to. The new West Wing special is on tonight, while latest Marvel comics show Helstrom is coming to Hulu (US) tomorrow, but that seems to be about it. I’ll do my best to review the last of those at least – and anything else that shows up that I’ve missed.

What TMINE has been watching

The regulars list is looking quite healthy, even though The Boys has just given us its season finale. After the jump, reviews of that, Criminal (UK), neXt and Tehran, as well as new NBC (US) show Connecting… and Disney+’s The Right Stuff.

Meanwhile, I’ve also only just noticed that Warrior (US: Cinemax; UK: Sky Atlantic) has been back for two whole weeks, so I’ll be playing catch-up with that next week. Oops.

Fourth-episode verdict: Tehran (Israel: Kan 11; UK: Apple TV+)

In Israel: Aired on Kan 11 in June
In the UK: Fridays, Apple TV+

‘A Netflix Original’. ‘An Amazon Original’. ‘An Apple TV+ Original’. It’s always fascinating to see just how much TV on the global streaming services isn’t actually original – just some exclusive acquired TV given a new name tag.

Amazon is probably the most transparent service, but even the likes of Good Omens – a co-production with the BBC – get called Amazon Originals. Netflix, for its part, is happy to stamp Original on practically everything it buys from anyone else, whether it put any money into making it or not.

And now here comes Apple TV+’s first non-English language ‘Apple Original’, Tehran. Which is actually just a Kan 11 (Israel) TV show for which Apple has exclusive rights outside Israel. So far, so Netflix.

What’s more interesting than that simple aping of Netflix – and lack of honesty about a show’s origins, despite the global ‘trust us’ Apple brand – is this choice. It’s an Israeli show. Not French, German or anything else, but Israeli. And a spy show to boot, set in Iran, with a mix of Farsi, Hebrew, English and even French dialogue – all with some very high production values, too.

As a way of saying, “Netflix… similar, but classier. More Think Different”, you’d be hard-pushed to pick a clearer opening move.

Niv Sultan in Tehran
Niv Sultan in Tehran

Tehran – but not

Tehran focuses on Tamar Rabinyan (Niv Sultan), a Jewish woman born in Iran but raised in Israel. A Mossad agent and computer hacker, she’s sent to Tehran to neutralise Iran’s air defences, so that Israeli warplanes can bomb a nuclear plant and prevent Iran from obtaining an atomic bomb.

When she arrives in Iran she switches identities with a Muslim employee of the local electricity company. But the mission goes wrong and she has to go into hiding, while being hunted by Shaun Toub (Iron Man) and occasionally helped by local Mossad agent Navid Negahban (Homeland, Legion).

As she does so, she learns more about her roots and Tehran itself.

What time, TMINE? Including Evil and Mr Inbetween

Every Friday, TMINE lets you know when the latest TV shows from around the world will air in the UK

It’s been a month since the last WTT, since naturally there have been a whole bunch of premiere dates announced and new shows acquired. However, just so I maintain my sanity, I’m only going to deal with those announced this week.

All the same, that’s quite a lot. However, apart from BBC One’s acquisition of HBO Max’s Love Life, which will be ‘coming soon‘, they all have premiere dates.

Full details for Awkwafina is Nora From Queens, FBI: Most Wanted, Evil, 9-1-1: Lone Star, Tehran, The Sect, Emily in Paris, Take Two, The Family, Minority Report, and Mr Inbetween after the jump.
