Every Friday, TMINE lets you know when the latest global TV shows will air in the UK

Just one new acquisition this week – The Alienist (US: TNT; UK: Netflix) – of which I’ve just reviewed the first episode. That’ll be available in its totality on Netflix here in the UK from April 19.

There’s also been a secret acquisition by Amazon of season 2 of Baron Noir (France: Canal+). Why do I say secret? Because firstly it didn’t tell anyone and secondly it’s deploying a secret new airing strategy. What is this secret new strategy? Well, you know the way it makes available the latest episode of a new US TV show the day after it airs in the US? Same thing here, even though it’s French. In fact, the first two episodes are already available.

Okay, so not that secret really.

Damnation

Damnation (US: USA; UK: Netflix)
Premiere date:  Thursday, February 1st

Billed as “as an epic saga of the secret history of the 1930s American heartland, chronicling the mythic conflict and bloody struggle between big money and the downtrodden, God and greed, charlatans and prophets,” Damnation sees firebrand faux preacher Killian Scott and his smarter, more literate wife Sarah Jones stirring up a proletariat uprising against capitalism. Trouble is, professional strike-breaker Logan Marshall-Green is on his tail, and he’s willing to do what it takes to stop the revolution before it starts.

An intriguing, failed experiment and a window onto a generally unobserved time and place that still has a lot going for it in many areas. But it got cancelled this week so season 1’s your lot.

Inspector Falke

Tatort (The Mind of a Murderer/Inspector Falke) (Germany: Das Erste; UK: All4)
Premiere date: Friday, February 2nd

As I mentioned earlier this week, Germany’s long-running Tatort krimi series is actually made up of several different strands supplied by different parts of Germany. Walter Presents has already given us two of these strands as Cenk Batu (‘Team Hamburg’ from 2008 to 2012) and Nick’s Law (‘Team Hamburg’ from 2013 to 2016), but up next are The Mind of a Murderer (‘Team Dortmund’) and Inspector Falke (the new ‘Team Hamburg’).

Maltese

Maltese: Il romanzo del commissario (Maltese: The Mafia Detective) (Italy: RAI; UK: Channel 4)
Premiere date: Sunday, February 4th, 10pm

Set in the 70s, Maltese sees police detective Kim Rossi Stuart return to Sicily for the wedding of a childhood friend and gets caught up in a murder case which sees him waging war against the mafia in a desperate effort to unravel the truth. Rike Schmid co-stars.

Everything Sucks!

Everything Sucks! (Netflix)
Premiere date: Friday, February 16th

Set in Boring, Oregon (that’s a real place, BTW) in 1996, Everything Sucks! is a coming of age story that revolves around the High School’s A/V Club and Drama Club – two groups of nerdy-edgy outsiders, who join forces to make a movie.

Seven Seconds

Seven Seconds (Netflix)
Premiere date: Friday, February 23rd

After a white cop accidentally hits and critically injures a black teenager, a northeastern US city explodes with racial tensions, an attempted cover-up and its aftermath, and the trial of the century.

Stars Regina King, who seems to be the queen of anthology series these days.

This week, we’ve seen a few new acquisitions. Romper Stomper (Australia: Stan), the update to the old Russell Crowe movie about neo-Nazis, has been picked up by BBC Three to air some time this year. Meanwhile, Syfy’s picked up Outpost, Dean Devlin and Jonathan Glassner’s series about a strong female hero and the lone survivor of a race called ‘Blackbloods’ who discovers her magical powers as she seeks revenge. That should start some time late this year.

We also have a couple of premiere dates:

Premiere date: Friday, February 9

Stupid old person’s idea of what smart, talented bold young women working on a magazine like Cosmo must be like. Virtually every line of dialogue is not just empowering, it tells you how empowering it is. Even though very little of it actually is empowering and usually simply reveals the ineptitude at real-life results of those with nothing much more than social media experience.

Character-driven original series inspired by real events in Brazil in which a small group of dogged investigators comes to discover the inner workings of a monstrous corruption scheme and the impact their pursuit has on everyone involved – including themselves.

Yes, bet you forgot I did these, too. Well, there’s one of note announced this week: BBC One’s Ghost in the Water.

Only one acquisition without a premiere date this week – Netflix has picked up Syfy (US)’s yet-to-be-made George RR Martin piece Nightflyers. Otherwise, a lovely feast of dates for new shows lies ahead of you, two of which I’ve actually seen and reviewed, which is nice.

Six (US: History; UK: 5Spike)
Premiere date: Friday, January 19, 9pm

Former SEAL Team Six troop leader Richard ‘Rip’ Taggart (Walton Goggins) is captured by Boko Haram and it’s up to his former SEAL Team Six comrades to put their differences aside to locate and rescue their former troop leader.

Not even half as good as SEAL Team or even the less SEAL-ish The Brave, it’s a show that gets by on the kudos of its subject matter, rather than any real aptitude at drama or characterisation. ISIS terrorists recruiting online from plush apartments in Dubai and communicating using video games? In English? Hmm.

I didn’t watch this one because it’s a mini-series and started while I was on holiday (IIRC). So here’s the rubric:

The Disappearance follows the Sullivan family in the wake of a terrifying family drama. As the fractured family bands together to solve the mystery that has uprooted their lives, long-held secrets are uncovered. Driven by hope and a relentless determination to do whatever necessary to uncover the mystery, the same hidden truths that threaten to shatter this family may also be the very key to reuniting them.

The six episode drama series was created by Normand Daneau and Geneviève Simard and stars Peter Coyote (ET), Aden Young (Rectify), Camille Sullivan (The Man In The High Castle), Joanne Kelly (Warehouse 13), Micheline Lanctôt (Unité 9) and Kevin Parent (Café de Flore).

Every Friday, TMINE lets you know when the latest global TV shows will air in the UK

Christmas hasn’t stopped the acquisitions staff at various UK networks from rushing through some acquisitions, and the schedulers aren’t taking a break, either.

This week, 5Spike picked up History (US)’s inferior SEAL team drama Six, for broadcast in early 2018, while Channel 4 (and Walter) have picked up TV4 (Sweden)’s Rebecka Martinsson, which will air… some time.

Meanwhile, most of last week’s new acquisitions now have airdates, as do a few other shows that had already been acquired:

Superstore (US: NBC; UK: ITV2)
Premiere date: Tuesday, January 2, 8.30pm

America Ferrera (Ugly Betty) is a supervisor in a hypermarket and Ben Feldman (A to Z) is the new employee with airs and graces who finds her attractive but makes an immediate bad impression on her, which leaves her with little patience for him. The result is that he keeps making costly mistakes, such as marking everything as costing $0.25 rather than 25% less, resulting in Black Friday levels of customer in-fighting.

Without jokes, a comedy show is for naught, and while frequently it’s smart and comes perilously close to being funny and sometimes even witty, nothing ever really lands home, bar a joke about a cubic zirconium knock-off. Still, it’s better than Sky’s Trollied.

Outsiders (US: WGN America; UK: Netflix)
Premiere date: Friday, January 5

An everyday tale of an inbred family of Southeners, sticking by their own kind, obeying a stern family figure, living by their own rules, drinking moonshine, racing all over the place, breaking whatever laws they want while the cops try and fail to catch them. About as smart a drama as you can make about a family of 200 or so cousins, only one of whose members can read.

Underground (US: WGN America; UK: Netflix)
Premiere date: Friday, January 5

A look at the ‘underground railroad’ that helped slaves in the US to escape to freedom, usually in British North America (aka Canada). On the one hand, the show takes great pains to be as realistic as possible. On the other, it also takes great pains to be as ‘with it’ as possible, with flashy camerawork, a modern soundtrack, time jumps, slow motion, and dialogue that’s often no more than a decade old. I lasted an episode.

Police officer Hanna Svensson uses her own son to infiltrate a Croatian criminal family.

Black Lightning (US: The CW; UK: Netflix)
Premiere date: Tuesday, January 23

Retired superhero returns to the action, while juggling responsibilities at home and work. Not yet aired in the US.

Frankie Drake Mysteries (Canada: CBC; UK: Alibi)
Premiere date: Tuesday, January 23, 9pm

Mash up of of Murdoch Mysteries and Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries that sees Lauren Lee Smith (CSI, Good Dog, This Life, The Listener) playing the only female private detective working in 1920s Toronto. Jaunty fun, with the likes of Ernest Hemingway dropping by for a bit of flirtation, interspersed with female-empowering historicity, but let down by the singularly wet Lee Smith.
