Every Friday, TMINE lets you know when the latest TV shows from around the world will air in the UK

The only new acquisitions this week also have premiere dates. So let’s get straight to it:

Premiere dates

Coppers

Coppers (Rough Justice) (Belgium: VTM; UK: More4)
Premiere date: Friday, March 9, 9pm

Haven’t seen this so let’s see what Google Translate makes of the spiel:

In an ideal world, justice and justice are synonyms. A criminal commits a crime against a victim and the justice system ensures that the scales are rebalanced. The criminal gets his deserved punishment and the victim is compensated as far as possible for the suffering suffered. Often the reality is different. Lady Justice is not wearing a blindfold for centuries. Large fraudsters are released while small shrimps are being dealt with. Perpetrators are released by procedural errors while victims remain in the cold. Sometimes the law can be very unjust.

‘Coppers’, the new crime series by VTM and the production house Menuet, in which Hilde De Baerdemaeker, in the role of Commissioner Liese Meerhout of the federal judicial police, is looking for justice. In thirteen stand-alone episodes, the audience is introduced to Liese Meerhout, a warm, driven flick, with a quirky side.

The television series is a combination of free adaptations of the crime novels by Toni Coppers and new stories in line with the work of the author.

Gidseltagningen (Below The Surface)
Gidseltagningen (Below The Surface)

Gidseltagningen (Below The Surface) (Denmark: Kanal 5; UK: BBC Four)
Premiere date: Saturday, March 10, 9pm

Written and directed by Kasper Barfoed, Below The Surface focuses on an act of terrorism committed on the Copenhagen Metro, where fifteen people are taken hostage. Former soldier Philip Nørgaard (Johannes Lassen), who is head of the PET Terror Task Force, tries to save the hostages with help from members of his elite team.

SMILF
Frankie Shaw in SMILF

SMILF (US: Showtime; UK: Sky Atlantic)
Premiere date: Wednesday, March 14, 10pm

Frankie Shaw (Mr Robot) writes and stars in this series based on a semi-autobiographical short film she directed a few years ago. Obviously, it all feels accurate and the fact Showtime has it paired with Shameless should tell you something about how it feels tonally. However, it’s a lot less funnier than Shameless, and is mostly a sad tale about someone losing out on life’s events. An interesting perspective, perhaps even important, but not really a journey I want to go on, I’m afraid.

The Resident
The Resident: L-R: Manish Dayal, Emily VanCamp, Matt Czuchry and Bruce Greenwood ©2017 Fox Broadcasting Co. Cr: Guy D’Alema/FOX

The Resident (US: Fox; UK: Universal Channel)
Premiere date: Tuesday, April 10, 9pm

A medical procedural that gets better but duller over time as we learn the difference between medicine in theory and medicine in practice. The show starts off a “Battle of the Dicks”, with new arrival Manish Dayal learning that his teaching resident (Matt Czuchry) is a dick, but one who knows more than he does; meanwhile, Czuchry has to deal with fatally incompetent head of surgery Bruce Greenwood, who in turn knows more than he does and is willing to use it blackmail everyone into keeping quiet about his shaky hands.

Later episodes then downgrade the dickishness of the characters so that the show becomes more of a consideration of the financial and political issues involved in treating patients. It’s a more interesting, if more predictable show, but still not worth sticking around for.

Date My Dad

Date My Dad (US: UP TV; UK: Movies 24)
Premiere date: Sunday, April 29, 5pm

Former professional baseball player, Ricky Cooper had the perfect life until his world comes crashing down when his wife passes away, leaving him to raise his three daughters with the help of his live-in mother-in-law Rosa.

Sounds grim, but it’s supposed to be a comedy and it sees Raquel Welch playing Rosa. Huh.

When’s that show you mentioned starting, TMINE? Including Ghost Wars, Lost in Space and The Dangerous Book for Boys

Every Friday, TMINE lets you know when the latest TV shows from around the world will air in the UK

Only one new acquisition this week, with Walter Presents picking up ZDF/Arte (Germany)’s Bad Banks. No word even about what year that will go out in, though, which is fairly typical for Walter.

But we do have a quiet a few premiere dates. Don’t be too surprised that they’re all on streaming services.

Premiere dates

Ghost Wars

Ghost Wars (US: Syfy; UK: Netflix)
Premiere date: Friday, March 2

Set in a remote Alaskan town that has been overrun by paranormal forces, Ghost Wars sees local outcast Avan Jogia having to overcome the town’s prejudices and his own personal demons to harness his repressed psychic powers in order to save everyone from the mass haunting threatening to destroy them all. Also stars Vincent D’Onofrio and Meatloaf.

Despite coming from the Final Draft® of Simon Barry (Continuum), Ghost Wars is a really rather laughable affair that’s almost simultaneously boring. Best avoided.

The Dangerous Book For Boys

The Dangerous Book For Boys (Amazon)
Premiere date: Friday, March 30

Created by Bryan Cranston (yes, that one) and Greg Mottola (Superbad) and based on the book by Conn and Hal Iggulden, The Dangerous Book For Boys follows the McKenna family as they cope with the untimely passing of Patrick (Let’s Get Physical and Silicon Valley‘s Chris Diamantopoulos), their patriarch and a whimsical inventor who touched the lives of everyone who knew him. His death has left the family reeling, but hope appears in the form of a book called The Dangerous Book for Boys that Patrick created as a handbook to help his three sons.

The book is a how-to guide for childhood that inspires fantasies for his youngest son, Wyatt (Gabriel Bateman). While in his fantasy world, Wyatt reconnects with his father and learns life skills that help him navigate the real world. The series also stars Erinn Hayes (Kevin Can Wait, Guys with Kids, Worst Week, The Winner) as Beth, the matriarch of the family who is trying to raise her boys as a single parent. Diamantopoulos also plays the role of Terry, Patrick’s twin brother.

Lost in Space

Lost in Space (Netflix)
Premiere date: Friday, April 13

Adaptation of the 60s TV series. Set 30 years in the future, the Robinson clan finds itself among those first selected to colonize space. They are forced to come together and forge new alliances after crash-landing on a lost planet, which is light years from their intended destination.

Toby Stephens (Black Sails) and Molly Parker (Deadwood) play parents/scientists John and Maureen Robinson, while Taylor Russell (Falling Skies), Ignacio Serricchio (General Hospital) and Parker Posey (Louie) round out the cast as daughter Judy Robinson, blue-collar contractor Don West and the manipulative Dr Smith.

DVD releases

Bet you’d forgotten I did these, hadn’t you? Tell the truth, so had I. But I’ll just point out that Britannia (UK: Sky Atlantic) is coming out on DVD and Blu-Ray on March 26.

Jeff Daniels in Hulu (US)'s The Looming Tower
Airdates

When’s that show you mentioned starting, TMINE? Including The Looming Tower

Every Friday, TMINE lets you know when the latest TV shows from around the world will air in the UK

Just two acquisitions this week. The first is Tabula Rasa (Belgium: VRT), which has been picked up by Channel 4/Walter Presents and will air in the summer, but there’s no specific date yet. It’s a crime drama about a woman with amnesia, just in case you’re wondering, but I’ll tell you more when there’s a premiere date.

Also picked up this week is:

The Looming Tower (US: Hulu; UK: Amazon)
Premiere date: Thursday, March 1

Alec Baldwin and Jeff Daniels star in this 10-part series, based on the Pulitzer prize-winning non-fiction book by Lawrence Wright, that examines the work of the CIA and FBI in tracking the growing influence of Al Qaeda before the 9/11 attacks. It also stars Peter Sarsgaard, Michael Stuhlbar, Tahar Rahim and Virginia Kull.

Young Sheldon

No new acquisitions this week – sad! – but one premiere date has been announced.

Young Sheldon (US: CBS; UK: E4)
Premiere date: Thursday, February 22, 8.30pm

It’s not too surprising that this prequel to The Big Bang Theory should end up on said show’s UK home. It’s also unsurprising that’s it not really very funny at all, given the quality of its predecessor. What is surprising is that it’s actually quite sweet, more a dramedy about what it’s like being a genius growing up in Texas and going to High School when you’re just nine years old. What gags there are come from Jim Parsons’ voice over, but if you go into it thinking of it as a 1990s Physics Wonder Years, you might actually find a few decent things to enjoy.

Striking Out

When’s that show you mentioned starting, TMINE? Including Striking Out, Gone and Alexa & Katie

Every Friday, TMINE lets you know when the latest global TV shows will air in the UK

Quite a lot of acquisitions this week, with Universal Channel picking up The Resident (US: Fox), Sky1 grabbing hold of S.W.A.T. (US: CBS), 5USA acquiring Training Day (US: CBS) and Walter Presents shockingly acquiring a dark Scandi thriller Elven (The River) (Norway: TV3) – who saw that coming?

Premiere dates have been a bit harder to come by, mind, but here’s three to tickle your fancy.

Striking Out
Striking Out
Left to Right: Rory Keenan as Eric, Fiona Shaughnessy as Meg, Emmet Byrne as Ray, Neil Morrissey as Ray and Amy Huberman as Tara

Striking Out (Ireland: RTÉ One; UK: 5Select)
Premiere date: Tuesday, February 13

Channel 5’s new 5Select channel is launching with Irish legal thriller Striking Out, which has been renewed for a second season in its home country. Here’s the Wiki plot rundown, since I ain’t seen it.

Striking Out follows the suddenly tumultuous professional and personal life of Dublin-based solicitor, Tara Rafferty (Amy Huberman), and her fledgling legal firm. With the help of Ray Lamont (Emmet Byrne), her street smart and opinionated client-turned-assistant, Meg Riley (Fiona O’Shaughnessy), a tech guru and private detective, Pete (Brahm Gallagher), the easy-going owner of the café where she makes her new office, and Senior Counsel Vincent Pike (Neil Morrissey – yes, that one), Tara’s mentor and friend, Striking Out follows Tara in her often surprising, sometimes poignant cases – their findings, fallouts, and resolutions.

Spanning from grandeur of the Four Courts to the beehive of Grand Canal, Striking Out is a snapshot of contemporary life in Ireland. Over time Tara’s cases pit her in direct conflict with influential families and the legal and political establishment, and also challenge her own ethics as she navigates her new life, fighting the urging of Eric and his and her family to return to the way things were. She isn’t alone in the battle, though. With support from her new team, Tara finds that this unexpected road is actually more rewarding

Gone
Gone
Left to right: Leven Rambin, Chris Noth, Andy Mientus, and Danny Pino

Gone (NBC (US)/TF1 (France)/Vox (Germany); UK: Universal Channel)
Premiere date: Monday March 19, 9pm

A TV show that has even less of a fixed abode than AbsentiaGone has only just started airing in the likes of France and Germany, which is why I haven’t seen it. That and it sounding rubbish, despite both Leven Rambin and Chris Noth being in the cast. So here’s the spiel:

Based on the Chelsea Cain novel One Kick, Gone tells the story of Kit “Kick” Lanigan (Leven Rambin), the survivor of a famous child-abduction case, and Frank Novak (Chris Noth), the FBI agent who rescued her. Determined never to fall victim again, as an adult Kick has trained herself in martial arts and the use of firearms.

She finds her calling when Novak persuades her to join a special task force dedicated to solving abductions and missing persons’ cases. Paired with former army intelligence officer John Bishop (Danny Pino), along with other team members, Maya Kennedy (Tracie Thoms) and James Finley (Andy Mientus), the team work to solve cases and bring victims home.

No English-language trailers that I could find, but if you don’t mind some Spanish, there’s this one:

And if you can cope with a little French, there’s these for the first two episodes:

Alexa & Katie

Alexa & Katie (Netflix)
Premiere date: Friday, March 23

Sigh. Not seen this one, either, but it’s Netflix. Probably won’t see this since it’s for kids:

Alexa & Katie follows two best friends eagerly anticipating the start of their freshman year of high school. Despite the fact that Alexa is undergoing cancer treatment, her outgoing personality and enthusiasm for life never falter, especially with her loyal, quirky, and awkwardly adorable best friend Katie by her side. At times they’re left feeling like outsiders, during a period when what seems to matter most is fitting in.

The comedy series stars Paris Berelc, Isabel May, Tiffani Thiessen, Emery Kelly, Eddie Shin, Jolie Jenkins and Finn Carr.

There’s no trailer yet. Soz.
