Most of the talk at the weekend at this year’s SDCC was about the forthcoming Justice League movie, the Wonderful poster and trailer for which we looked at on Monday. However, there was some news about comics, too – mind-blowing, hey?

Top of the announcements was the revelation that there will indeed by a Volume 2 – and a Volume 3 – of Wonder Woman: Earth One, once again written by Grant Morrison and drawn by Yanick Paquette.

The story will see Nazis, led by Paula Von Gunter, invading Paradise island. It’s Amazons vs Nazis, and somebody is going to get punched!

But at a panel with little known DC publishers Dan DiDio and Jim Lee, while reflecting on the nu52, DiDio confirmed that at least one part of it was still in effect: Zeus is still Diana’s dad.

Told ya.

In other news, also as suspected, Wonder Woman 2 is a go and it now has a release date: December 13 2019. More surprisingly, Patty Jenkins still isn’t confirmed to direct it. What’s going on there, hey?

What is confirmed about Jenkins is that she’ll be working with Steve Trevor Chris Pine again, this time on a completely unrelated TV project for TNT about Fauna Hodel. For those wanting to know a little more about this year’s other Wonder Woman movie, Professor Marston & The Wonder Women, there’s a Q&A with that film’s director for you to peruse, too.

But it’s nearly August, which means it’s time for Weekly Wonder Woman to become Not Until September Wonder Woman. Unfortunately, I’ve only one title to leave you with until then: Wonder Woman #27. Let’s chat about it after the jump.

SDCC – aka San Diego Comic-Con – had turned into one of the most important events of the year, not just for comics but for movies and TV shows. At least of the nerdier and more US variety, since it’s not like there’s a great Poldark presence there every year.

But it’s where all the latest news is revealed and you get to see the new trailers, and this year, we’ve had a bevy. I’m not going to go through the whole lot, as that way madness lies, but you can find most of them in today’s news.

On top of that, unfortunately, a few of the best trailers that got shown haven’t yet been fed into YouTube (eg Netflix’s Marvel’s The Punisher and Black Panther). But at the very least, after the jump, you’ll be able to feast your eyes on trailers for the likes of Justice League, Thor: Ragnarok, Ready Player One, Netflix’s Marvel’s The Defenders, CBS All Access’ Star Trek: Discovery, HBO’s Westworld, and Netflix’s  Stranger Things (season 2). Oh yes, and The CW’s DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.

Weekly Wonder Woman: Trinity #11, Justice League #25

So I think probably everyone’s now a little bit surprised by how well Wonder Woman did at the box office. It’s just surpassed Guardians of the Galaxy 2 to become the biggest grossing movie of the summer (so far) and is on course to beat Beauty and the Beast to become highest grossing movie of the year, if it gets a following wind. Indeed, it’s just passed the final Harry Potter movie to become the third highest grossing Warner Bros film ever.

Gosh. Small surprise therefore that Warner Bros has decided to juggle with its schedules a bit to include two more mysterious, untitled DCEU movies in 2020. With no Wonder Woman 2 in the current Warner Bros game plans, have a guess what one of those might be…

Of course, before then, we have Justice League, which might take the sheen off the whole enterprise if handled badly. Don’t like that new photo of the Justice League above? I’ve got another one on the right:

I won’t lie to you – it ain’t looking good.

Before even Justice League, though, there’s Professor Marston & The Wonder Women, which is a biopic of Wonder Woman’s creator(s) starring Luke Evans, Rebecca Hall and Bella Heathcote, with Connie Britton and Oliver Platt lending a hand to proceedings, too.

I wonder what the world will make of that.

Meanwhile, over in the comics world, DC is capitalising on the apparent success of comics that are based on somewhat dodgy lines of action figures (cf DC Comics: Bombshells) with a new digital title in August: Gotham City Garage, written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly, and drawn by a rotating team of artists including Brian Ching and Lynne Yoshii.

Gotham City Garage is an anti-fascist anthem for the open road, starring reimagined takes on DC’s great female characters through an outlaw lens. We’re bringing Big Barda, Steel, Catwoman, Harley Quinn, Silver Banshee, Hawkgirl and the first Kryptonian this world has ever seen—the mysterious girl named Kara Gordon—into a world of bikes, outlaws and elaborate tattoos.

It’s been a decade since Governor Lex Luthor saved his people from devastation and turned Gotham City into the modern utopia known as The Garden. With the rest of the world in ruins, Luthor’s city continues to thrive—but not for everyone. Order has been kept only by the LEXES technology that networks the entire population under one mindset—and if a citizen steps out of line, the Bat and his minions are brutal in restoring the status quo. So when a young Kara Gordon comes under suspicion by her LEXES superiors, she heads straight into the dreaded wasteland—where she’ll discover the fierce oil-and-gear rebels of the Gotham City Garage.

Basically, it’s all a big excuse to have the DC comics characters dress like bikers, including our Diana.

Oh dear. I don’t know what’s worse – the crop top or the fact she appears to have put on Captain America’s trousers by accident.

Wonder Woman 2‘s going to do about $4.50 at the box office, isn’t it?

Unless you’re some kind of ‘sports fan’ (whatever they are) then the big news of yesterday was that actress Jodie Whittaker joins a long line of actors with awkwardly spelt names to become the 13th/14th official TV Doctor Who.

She’s already done an interview with the BBC web site, if you want to find out more about her, the casting process and important things like whether she’s picked out a costume yet.

Weekly Wonder Woman: Wonder Woman #26

Wonder Woman‘s continued advance at the worldwide box office has dominated the news of the past week. Propelled largely by women and older movie-goers, it’s now overtaken to Suicide Squad to become the second-highest grossing DCEU movie worldwide and – if you discount anything featuring Batman, Iron Man or Spider-man, it’s the second highest grossing comic book movie ever. Which is nice.

Among the movies it’s now surpassed is Deadpool, something the merc with the mouth has no problems with:

Perhaps trying to nudge the movie over the Batman v Superman finishing line in the record books, we have Gal Gadot releasing some behind-the-scenes footage on Instagram:

There’s already talk of the sequel, too, possibly set in the 80s during the Cold War, possibly even with Steve Trevor. But with Justice League coming later in the year, publicity is as much about that movie as it is about Wonder Woman, which is why the upcoming San Diego Comic Con has most of the cast, including Gal Gadot, scheduled to appear.

But this week also saw something else important: Wonder Woman #26, the first issue by Shea Fontana, who is the first person not called Greg Rucka to write the title since DC’s Rebirth.
