Holiday! Celebrate! Again!

Crete!

Yes, it’s August again, more or less, so it’s time for my annual pilgrimage to Greece. That means no blogging for give or take the next three weeks.

Beyond that, the Daily News won’t be returning until September, for three awesome, well considered reasons:

  1. Most people are on their holidays in August, too, so I’m not getting up early to write something no one’s going to read.
  2. Most TV people are on their holidays in August, too, so they’re not actually going to be making much news I can get up early to report on.
  3. I need a break and after three weeks of holiday, I’m not sure I’ll be able to get up early to report on anything anyway.

But despite having pruned my viewing to a minimum, there are going to be shows over August, both regular ones I’m already watching and new ones. In particular, Ali Larter will be back on TV for TNT’s Legends on August 13th. Can you imagine me missing that?

Ali thinks that’s ridiculous, too.

TTFN and If you’re going on holiday, too, have a nice time – let us know if you had fun!

Let’s ignore July 4 with this handy guide to UK accents

July 4 is the anniversary of something or other in the US that they like to celebrate for some reason, so they’re all going to be busy setting fire to miscellany today: gunpowder, bits of meat, that kind of thing. But just in case they want something better to do, such as learn about the British (we’re not coming, we’re not coming – we’re staying here), here’s a handy guide for them to UK accents, with Siobhan Thompson going through 17 regions’ worth of speech sounds from around England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and just for luck Ireland.

Just to warn Americans in advance though: there are lots more accents than this, particularly the much-hated Estuary English, and if you think London (and Lancashire, Yorkshire et al) only has one accent, you might be in for a surprise. Also, her Glaswegian accent is way too comprehensible – you will not understand Glaswegians.

But it’s pretty good. And at least you’ll now know what accent Billie Piper was aiming for in Penny Dreadful.

Happy ninth birthday to The Medium Is Not Enough

A birthday cakeHappy Birthday, The Medium is Not Enough. Yes, nine years ago* – that’s right, you’ve been enduring this for nearly a decade – this blog emerged into the light of the Internet with its first two posts: previews of Prison Break, the not-unpopular Supernatural and the still-unseen Global Frequency; and tedious cruft about The Omega Factor. Surprisingly, both Supernatural and I are still here.

I’d like to thank everyone who commented and engaged with me this year, particularly Mark Carroll, Gareth Williams, GYAD, Toby, Rullsenberg, SK and benjitek, whose collective wisdom is greater than mine, so you should listen to them, assuming you’re not them.

As always, though, it’s time to do some market research: if you have any suggestions for what else you might like to see on the blog, please let me know below. I know I’ve not been fulfilling my promise to provide lots of pictures of Scarlett Johansson. Sorry. I’ll try harder next year.

Have a nice weekend (and, indeed, year),

PS That review of the dreadful Dominion might have to wait until next week…

* Well, actually, it’s nine years ago tomorrow, but I don’t blog at the weekends – that way lies madness and an early grave.
