Sky Italia to create a 1992 channel to promote new series 1992

What were you doing in 1992? Watching tele? Going to the movies?

Well, if you were Italian, you were probably a member of the government, the mafia or the police, fighting for control of the First Republic. At least, that’s what new Sky Italia series 1992 suggests.

For those of you in the UK wanting to watch the latest show from the producers of Gomorrah, it should be airing simultaneously on Sky Arts with its Italian broadcast, starting March 24. But if you happen to be in Italy, I’m sure you’ll be delighted to hear that until then, from this Saturday, Sky Italia is going to be creating a temporary new channel dedicated to the year 1992. Featuring movies including Wayne’s World and Mediterraneo, and classic sports events of 1992 including John McEnroe versus Andre Agassi at Wimbledon, it will also feature TV shows such as The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Family Matters, Beverly Hills 90210, Melrose Place and Baywatch.

Suddenly, looking at that list, I’m not so nostalgic for 1992. Oh well.

What TV’s hot in Lisbon right now?

Good question. See, I was there for the past few days (hence my lack of blogging), and following the success of my previous photo expeditions to LA and New York, including my New York TV advertising feature, I thought I’d give you a brief rundown. With pictures.

So the first thing to note is that Meo is the king of telecoms over there. As well as mobile phones and broadband, they also offer TV services over the phone line, via satellite, via cable and even over 3G/4G. Meo is everywhere, particularly when it comes to WiFi hotspots. However, NOS does pretty much the same thing, including offering a whole range of premium channels, largely featuring US imports, and so has a lot of cash to spend on advertising. Here, for example, towering over the monument to Luís de Camões and this Easter parade is Claire Danes, the star of Segurança Nacional (aka Homeland).

Traipse all over Lisbon and you’ll spot NOS adverts for everything from Modern Family and Castle through to Vikings and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. However, confusingly, Homeland/Segurança Nacional actually airs on one of Fox International’s channels, which does its own advertising, too. Top of the heap of its advertising and appearing on the wall of pretty much every Metro station in Lisbon? Empire.

But NOS, Meo and Fox aren’t the only channels in Lisbon. AXN is out there, too. Top of its promotional considerations and dominating most bus stops and street signage is Chicago Fire.

“But, Rob,” you might ask. “Aren’t there any programmes made in Portugal?”

There are a few, at least, including news programmes, although most of the ones I saw advertised were for kids and were cartoons. The only truly ubiquitous advert was for Portugal’s very own version of Masterchef, which was about as common as Empire was on the Metro and airs on TVI, Portugal’s fourth terrestrial TV channel.

Canal+ trailers for Les Revenants, Versailles, Le Bureau Des Legéndes, Spotless, Panthers and Hard

Four new shows, two returning ones, including the much fabled second season of The Returned. No word yet on airdates, or when/if they’ll be emerging in the UK.

Intrigued? Then let me tell you more. Spotless is a black comedy set in London, in which the quiet life of John is turned upside down by the arrival of his criminal brother Martin. Why Spotless? Well, John runs a company that specialises in cleaning crime scenes…

Canal+ has a separate teaser trailer for this one.

Meanwhile, Versailles, as the name suggests is all about the 28-year-old Louis XIV – the Sun King himself – and the construction of the palace of Versailles, his having dealing with uppity nobles, etc. Panthers is a co-prod with Sky Atlantic starring Samantha Morton, John Hurt and Tahar Rahim that’s all about some missing diamonds. You can guess what channel that will end up on.

Lastly, Le Bureau Des Légendes is all about a department of the DGSE (France’s MI6/CIA) dedicated to undercover agents, with our hero (Mathieu Kassovitz) returning after six years undercover in Syria – but making the slight mistake of not abandoning his undercover life and ‘legend’…

And for those who want a Les Revenants teaser, here you go. Not much happens, mind.
