What have you been watching? Including Virgin River and Truth Be Told

It’s “What have you been watching?”, your chance to recommend to fellow TMINE readers anything you’ve been watching this week

This decade’s reviews

Christmas may only be one day, but somehow it manages to knock a couple of weeks out of the year. It’s no different with TMINE, either – just imagine our office party! – as we’ll be closing down on Friday until 6 January 2020.

Holidays are coming, as a certain yearly advert puts it.

That means this’ll be the last WHYBW of 2019 and indeed the decade for anyone who isn’t a great big pedant. Have I prepared anything special? Of course not. Don’t be ridiculous.

All I can say for my round-up of 2010-19 is that this decade, TMINE published more than 6,600 posts and more than 1,500 TV reviews, sometimes of multiple TV episodes, which is an awful lot of writing about and watching tele. I hope you’ve enjoyed it!

What’s coming this week

I’m going to push the boat out and say there might be an Orange Thursday, tomorrow, seeing as I’ve now watched both The Fear of God and Netflix’s new movie, 6 Underground. I’ll just need to write the reviews. However, that’s easier said than done, particularly given I’m seeing the new Star Wars in the evening. So we’ll see what transpires.

But after the jump, as promised, I’ll be taking a look at Apple TV+’s Truth Be Told, as well as the slightly unexpected Virgin River from Netflix.

Otherwise, the reviews will start again in the New Year.

Watchmen

The regulars

With Christmas nearly here, most of the regular shows have scaled down, but after the jump, we’ll also be talking about the latest episodes of Evil, For All Mankind, The Mandalorian and Mr Robot, as well as the season and (probably) series finale of Watchmen.

See you in a mo.

Review: Save Me 1×1-1×2 (US: NBC)

In the US: Thursdays, 8/7c, NBC

As we showed recently, every so often, a mainstream US TV channel will take a break from its usual agnostic programming to make a play for the Christian crowd. Whether it’s Touched by an Angel, Eli Stone or Saving Grace, suddenly sinners see the light and the Truth of His word is revealed. It’ll never be exactly according to any particular denomination’s beliefs and even the question of whether it’s a He or a She is up for grabs; there may even be an atheist’s ‘get out clause’ of ‘maybe it’s a brain condition causing this’; but the general principle – do what God wants and none of things He doesn’t – remains constant.

Save Me is like a slightly more comedic, slightly less offensive Saving Grace. In common with Eli Stone, it sees an ordinary American sinner – in this case Anne Heche, playing a former weather girl and party girl – discovers after nearly dying that she is to be a prophet of the Lord and spread His word, all while polishing up her fornicating, stealing, drinking act.

Manna from Heaven for religious viewers, you might think, but the only proof you’ll find of a loving God in this particular comedy black hole is Alex Breckenridge. Here’s a trailer.

Random Acts

Random Acts: Kelly Rutherford wears Tupperware, Alex Breckenridge gets milk poisoning and Tweets poetry about penises

So Kelly Rutherford, whom you might know from Gossip Girl

but, because I’m that old, whom I remember from the 1993 show The Adventures of Brisco County Jr where she played Brisco’s star-crossed lover Dixie:

is not normally known for being all that random. But this week, she decided to wear a Tupperware scarf to help boys and girls:

Apparently, Tupperware have introduced a new line of “Confidence” merchandise, designed by Aimee David, founder of The Queen of E.vil clothing line, that’s available for purchase on Facebook. The net profits go to the Boys & Girls Club of America.

Yes, clothing by Tupperware.

Welcome to randomness, Kelly – and Tupperware.

Meanwhile, reliable randomeer Alex Breckenridge, currently being flirty, witchy, vampire bait in the new trailer for True Blood season four*:

has been giving herself milk poisoning at Disneyworld:

Alex Breckenridge Tweets about food poisoning

And writing Tweet poetry about the heart and the penis:

And, as previously noted, regular randomeer Bradley Cooper decided to speak French fluently for no good reason, as well as adapt an almost impossible to adapt sci-fi novel:

What a random week for everyone.

* Incidentally, the hashtag #tbwithdrawal – doesn’t that make it sound like you’ve stopped taking your Tuberculosis meds? How random.

Random Acts

Random Acts of Ali Larter: Ali launches shoes, ScarJo makes Owen Wilson follow her, Alex Breckenridge goes pink, Amber Heard petitions against marriage and Dog the Bounty Hunter is bailing Nicolas Cage out of jail

Ali at the Pampers launch

So our Ali is up to more charity fun, helping Pampers celebrate its 50th anniversary and giving out care packages to parents as part of the Little Miracles Mission program:

Randomly, though she’s also been off launching a new line of Reebok trainers and giving out beauty tips while she does so.

Josh Duhamel and Ali Larter

Clearly, she’s back in the random business again. But that won’t stop her fellow randomeers, who’ve clearly got a taste for it.

Scarlett Johansson has been jogging with Sean Penn, but making Owen Wilson follow them.

Scarlett Johansson

Amber Heard, who’s normally off campaigning for marriage, has decided to campaign against it now – at least for girls around the world under 15 – and would like you to sign a petition to stop it from happening.

Amber Heard

Her Drive Angry co-star, Nicolas Cage – possibly the most random man in the world – has been in jail for alleged domestic abuse and has now been rescued, randomly enough, by Dog The Bounty Hunter.

But it’s Alex Breckenridge who’s gone truly, truly random, by deciding to go a little bit pink and not being sure she likes it.

Here ends the randomness for the week.

News

How pilot casting sometimes works: Alex Breckenridge demonstrates

Alex Breckenridge

I really like Alex Breckenridge. She’s a very good comedy actress who always manages to make the shows she’s in better. Plus she’s a pretty good photographer.

She does, however, have the worst luck when it comes to casting. She was the star of the short movie DEBS, but got replaced by Jordana Brewster in the feature version. She was in Dirt, but that got cancelled after two seasons. She was the best thing about The Ex-List – which was cancelled after four episodes. After a promising first season in Life Unexpected, she was in only one episode of the second season. She was in the pilot for Traffic Light and was recast. She was in the pilot for Mad Love… and was recast.

That’s got to suck.

Anyway, if you’d been following her on Twitter, you’d have known that her luck was down in this year’s pilot season.

So she went proactive.

And the news breaks today that she’s been cast as Cooper in Cooper and Stone. That was easy. Now all she has to do is avoid being recast…
