Weekly Wonder Woman: The Brave and the Bold #1, Trinity #18 and Wonder Woman/Conan #6

Every week, Weekly Wonder Woman keeps you up to date on everything involving DC Comics’ premier superheroine, including whether she’s been blessed by a fertility god

Do you know, I don’t think there’s been any proper Wonder Woman news this week. Not movies, not comics, definitely not TV. Nothing.

There is some book news, though, with Laurie Halse Anderson’s Wonder Woman: Tempest Tossed reimagining of our Diana:

15-year-old Diana sees drowning refugees and disobeys her mother Hippolyta to rescue them. She becomes caught up in their struggle, becoming a refugee herself. Washing up on a foreign shore, she is met by two UN workers – one called Steve and another called Trevor. While trying to help her find her way home, she uncovers a smuggler and trafficking ring.

Tempest Tossed

But that doesn’t really count cos it’s, you know, for kids.

So let’s head straight into the reviews. We have the last of the Wonder Woman-Conan crossover in Wonder Woman/Conan #6, while in Trinity #18, Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman are off fighting dinosaurs and riding unicorns on ‘Skartaris’. But we also have the start of a Batman-Wonder Woman team-up in The Brave and the Bold #1 as they have to go to Ireland to visit some gods.

Diana did also appear in Justice League #39. But this is all she did:

So let’s not bother with that Continue reading “Weekly Wonder Woman: The Brave and the Bold #1, Trinity #18 and Wonder Woman/Conan #6”

Weekly Wonder Woman: Wonder Woman #40, Shade: The Changing Girl/Wonder Woman #1

Yes, it’s Weekly Wonder Woman – keeping you up to date on pretty much anything involving DC Comics’ premier superheroine, including whether she likes milk

With Justice League about to come out on DVD, Blu-Ray et al, don’t be too surprised that the InterWeb™ has been flooded with clips, deleted scenes, featurettes and the like designed to promote the release. Here’s one going behind the scenes of Wonder Woman’s early rescue scene:

But also of interest is this one showing Superman’s deleted black costume:

And these of the mid- and post-credit scenes:

But maybe you just prefer images like this, of which I’m sure there are plenty on the DVD, too:

TV news

Etta Candy – aka Lucy Davis – has just signed up for Netflix’s new Sabrina the Teenage Witch series to play Aunt Hilda. If you don’t remember the original series, this was Aunt Hilda.

Comics news

Just in case you were wondering how well Wonder Woman was doing, January 2018’s chart reveals Wonder Woman #39 was the 48th most sought-after title. Which ain’t awful, I guess. But it’s not great.

Comics reviews

I spotted two issues out this week featuring our Diana. Somewhat unsurprisingly, the first is Wonder Woman #40, in which our Diana finishes playing with the Silver Swan and discovers if her brother survived the attack.

Somewhat more surprisingly, the second is a crossover with Shade: The Changing Girl as part of the ‘Milk Wars’ storyline. Don’t ask. You’ll be wanting to know about the nature of sanity and Aztec sacrifices next…

Weekly Wonder Woman: Batman #40, Justice League #38

Yes, it’s Weekly Wonder Woman – keeping you up to date on pretty much anything involving DC Comics’ premier superheroine, including her pet’s name

A quietish week for Diana in the real world. Gal Gadot is going to voice herself on The Simpsons, Liam Sharp has given an interview about his forthcoming Brave and the Bold team-up between Batman and Wonder Woman, and DC is launching a new line of young adult and middle grade titles that will include Wonder Woman in various guises. But that’s about it.

So let’s go straight for the reviews, where the sexual temptation of Bruce Wayne appears to be the theme of the week. In Batman #40, we see whether Diana and Bruce ever did end up kissing, despite the fact he’s marrying Catwoman soon. Meanwhile, Bruce takes a shine to another member of the Justice League in Justice League #38. What’s Diana doing? Playing with some African kids, of course.

All that after the jump.

Weekly Wonder Woman: Wonder Woman #39

Yes, it’s Weekly Wonder Woman – keeping you up to date on pretty much anything involving DC Comics’ premier superheroine, including what’s definitely not going to happen on her next movie

No Oscar nominations for Wonder Woman, but Baby Boss got a nod, so WWW spent last week in mourning. But it’s back now and feeling stronger.

Movie news

Gal Gadot’s response to that snub?

“I was very moved and touched by the people who were disappointed that Wonder Woman wasn’t nominated, but we certainly never did the movie for that,” Gadot told ET on Wednesday. “I think that you can’t have it all. We’ve done this movie and it was received in such an amazing, wonderful way, and we want to stay humble and grateful, and we’re going to have another movie, so who knows? Maybe the next one!”

Still, let’s look ahead to Wonder Woman 2, which is the first movie to officially adopt new PGA anti-sexual harassment guidelines. According to Patty Jenkins:

“It’s got great fun from the start, and great big ‘superhero’ presence from the start — and is funny, and a great love story again,” she said in an interview with Variety. ““And [there are] a couple new unbelievable characters who I’m so excited about — who are very different than were in the last movie.”

Comics news

Trinity‘s been cancelled. The last issue will finish off the current Skartaris storyline and will be out in April. I’m not hugely surprised, since it never really managed to serve any of the characters that well. Still, it’s a shame to have one fewer title with Diana in it every month.

Meanwhile, Liam Sharp, who’s currently working on a Batman/Wonder Woman storyline:

Work in progress…

…is beginning to regret ever mentioning that Batman and Wonder Woman might flirt even slightly.

There’s a lot of people hating on me for writing and drawing a series that teams Batman with Wonder Woman. Some of the hate is from people who ship Wonder Woman and Superman. Some is from people who wrongly think I’m splitting up Diana and Steve – I’m not. I wouldn’t. Some is from people who think Diana shouldn’t be with any man at all, because it’s a male objectification trope. I was called out for mentioning that there would be a nod to the Batman Wonder Woman shippers, which drove some people nuts. I was told I support cheating on your partner for suggesting it’s possible to have many relationships before you meet the one you truly love and marry. That things happen, and people drift apart, and people make mistakes. That there is room to explore many such relationships in melodramas. Apparently this is not true for some.

These things are the kind of moment that drive you away from interacting online. It’s increasingly hard to be there for fans in a positive way because of this. And it’s too easy to say ignore the trolls. By doing that we have all allowed this kind of behavior to flourish.

Twitter, hey?

Comics reviews

Despite the fact that it’s been two weeks since the previous WWW, there’s only been one new title to feature Diana: Wonder Woman #39. I’ll be covering that after the jump.

Actually, that’s not quite true: Dark Knights: Metal #5 does, too, and apparently she finds a new use for the Lasso of Truth in that. However, I couldn’t even get through the terribly written four pages of the Comixology preview, so more than that I can’t say. Anyone want to let me know what I’ve missed out on?

Although no Oscar yet, Wonder Woman is up for a Maxwell Weinberg Publicist Showmanship Motion Picture Award. Nope, never heard of them before, either.

Meanwhile, Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot are forming some kind of double act, it seems. As well as being interviewed together, they’re now doing charades on The Tonight Show:

Not much really in terms of actual comics news. But nu52 Wonder Woman writer Brian Azzarello is off designing taps for pubs now. No, really, he is.

Diana made no fewer than four appearances in comic books this week. In Justice League #37, Diana goes on TV. Again. Meanwhile, in Trinity #17, she (and one or more male pals) ends up powerless in an alternative universe last seen in an old comic and has to do a lot of fighting. Simultaneously, over in Batman #39, she (and one or more male pals) ends up powerless in an alternative universe last seen in an old comic and has to do a lot of fighting. And over in Wonder Woman/Conan #5, we finally learn if Diana and Yanna are the same woman.
