What have you been watching? Including Mr InBetween and The Haunting of Hill House

It’s “What have you been watching?”, your chance to recommend to fellow TMINE readers anything you’ve been watching this week

Not many new shows this week, so I was able to make it through the entire first season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina yesterday. I also passed verdict on Titans (US: DC Universe; UK: Netflix). I’m not sure if Netflix or Amazon have anything shiny and new for me this coming weekend, so who knows what might happen on Monday. I might even review all the films I’ve watched in the past six months in the exceptionally infrequent ‘Movie Monday’…

After the jump, we can talk about all the usual regulars: Black Lightning, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Doctor Who, Happy Together, The Last Ship, Magnum P.I., Pine Gap, and You. We can also talk about the final episode of Mr InBetween and the final two episodes of The Haunting of Hill House

Boxset Tuesday: Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (Netflix)

Available on Netflix

The long-running Archie comics have been a source of much TV, film and even music over the years. Their vanilla, 50s-nostalgia-tinged peppiness and general lack of darkness have been one of the reasons for their longevity, as have their characters, which have been reinterpreted in other media. At the movies, the most famous spin-off was Josie and the Pussycats, which some rate as one of the most overlooked and greatest movies of the 21st century.

On TV, however, we’ve had Riverdale. When that show was first mooted, the immediate question was how it would work, particularly on young adult-focused network The CW. The short answer was very well, since its creators basically decided to do their own version of Twin Peaks, with murder-mysteries and more. It wasn’t what people expected, but it was… good.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Sabrina

Riverdale‘s been doing quite well for itself since, so naturally, a spin-off was suggested based on another Archie character: Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Of course, there’s already been a movie adaptation followed by a rather famous, long-running TV adaptation, Sabrina The Teenage Witch.

Fully in keeping with the comic, Sabrina the Teenage Witch was a light-hearted sitcom all about a teenage girl’s struggles to go to a regular US High School and have a regular mortal life while juggling the fact she’s a witch with two equally witchy aunts and a talking cat. It was… nice.

So again, given the Twin Peaks-isation of Archie in Riverdale, everyone wanted to know what the new Sabrina show would be like – particularly once The CW rejected the spin-off and Netflix picked it up instead.

Whatever you guessed, it almost certainly wasn’t Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. I don’t think anyone expected this. Spoilery discussion after the jump as we discuss the entire first season…

What have you been watching? Including Pine Gap, All American and Light as a Feather

It’s “What have you been watching?”, your chance to recommend to fellow TMINE readers anything you’ve been watching this week

At my TV signal, unleash Hell.

Gosh, what a lot of new shows there have been this week. I got the air date of Marvel’s Daredevil wrong – it’s out this Friday, not last Friday as I thought last week – which was some relief, but The CW has finally released its new wares onto the world and ABC has unveiled its second wave of shows. I’ve just not had time to review them yet.

Of the new shows, elsewhere, I’ve reviewed DC Universe’s Titans and passed a fourth-episode verdict on Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House; I’ve also passed verdicts on ABC (US)’s A Million Little Things and CBS (US)’s God Friended MeThe Neighborhood and Happy Together. But that still leaves a fair few other shows to cover. After the jump, I’ll be dealing with two of them: The CW’s All American and Hulu’s Light As A Feather. But HBO’s remake of BBC Four’s Camping, The CW’s remake of its predecessor The CW’s Charmed, last night’s new ABC shows The Rookie and The Kids Are Alright, and Amazon’s Matthew Weiner anthology show The Romanoffs will all have to wait. As will anything else joining them in the next couple of days, although I imagine I’ll be binge-watching Daredevil at the weekend. Or maybe Chilling Adventures of Sabrina – that’s this weekend, too, isn’t it?

However, joining All American and Light as a Feather after the jump is another new show, this one from Australia to add a little variety: Pine Gap. And, of course, there’ll be the current roster of regulars: Black Lightning, Doctor Who, The Last Ship, Magnum P.I., Mr InBetween, SEAL Team and You. One of those is for the chop – can you guess which?

What have you been watching? Including Doctor Who and Black Lightning

It’s “What have you been watching?”, your chance to recommend to fellow TMINE readers anything you’ve been watching this week, assuming Disqus’s anti-Linux bias doesn’t stop you in your tracks

Marvellous. After having becoming a bit shallow over the past few weeks, TMINE’s viewing queue has begun to fill up again. And that’s before The CW unleashes all its new shows this week, ABC (Australia) unveils spy show Pine Gap on Sunday, and Netflix jumps up, shouts “Boo!” and releases both season 3 of Marvel’s Daredevil and its remake of The Haunting of Hill House on Friday.

Crikey. I’ve not even started season 3 of Amazon’s The Man in the High Castle yet and that’s been out since Friday.

This past week, however, I have passed third-episode verdicts on Magnum P.I. (US: CBS), Manifest (US: NBC) and Mr InBetween (Australia: Showcase), and I’ve watched a good few other shows, too, about which we can talk after the jump. This week, of course, saw the return of Doctor Who with a new showrunner and a new Doctor. But Black Lightning and SEAL Team also returned, so we can discuss them, too. I made a bit more headway with Maniac, as well, and I’ve kept my eyes glued to a big bunch of the new US shows, too: A Million Little Things, God Friended Me, Happy Together and The Neighborhood. Plus, of course, there are the stalwart regulars: The Last Ship and You.

Will and Grace is back, too, but what with My Kitchen Rules (South Africa), Masterchef Australia and The Great British Bake-Off, we’ve not had a chance to watch it in The Big Room. Maybe next week.

What TV’s on at the BFI in October/November? Including Doctor Who – Earthshock, Vic and Bob’s Big Night Out, and Watership Down

Every month, TMINE lets you know what TV the BFI will be presenting at the South Bank in London

A really bumper season of TV is coming up at the BFI – enough for two months, one might think, but despite being billed as October/November, almost all of it’s happening in November.

As well as a comedy season that’ll see the likes of Jennifer Saunders, Tracey Ullman, Lenny Henry and Jo Brand in conversation, there are airings of Nighty Night, I Love Lucy, reunions of The Real McCoy‘s cast, and a The Young Ones Q&A. On top of that, there’ll be previews of series 5 of People Just Do Nothing, BBC4’s forthcoming The Secrets of British Animation and Vic and Bob’s Big Night Out, and BBC1/Netflix’s new version of Watership Down.

There’ll also be a US TV documentary about Jane Fonda and a special event to celebrate the HD release of Doctor Who classic Earthshock, complete with Q&A with writer Eric Saward and Adric himself, Matthew Waterhouse.

Details after the jump. Excellent!
