Last week was quite quiet on the Wondy front. Sure, we had the last trailer for Batman v Superman before the movie hits the big screen next month. That featured not only a leaping/flying Wonder Woman…
…but also the first lines of dialogue we’ve heard her utter so far.
But in the comics book world, there wasn’t much to shout about. Unsurprisingly, given the ideas of romance demonstrated by DC in the first issue, there was no Young Romance this year to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Instead, we only had the concluding part of Wonder Woman ’77‘s fight with Clayface, young wartime Wondy going to the movies in The Legend of Wonder Woman #14 and alternative Diana doing some punching over in Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year Five #8.
It may not be the end of the month any more, but that’s not enough to stop Diana from popping up in various titles last week. As well as the usual appearances by Elseworld Dianas in Injustice: Gods Among Us – Year 5 and The Legend of Wonder Woman, we saw the return of TV Diana (and assorted comic book enemies) in Wonder Woman ’77.
And for those of you who hadn’t realised that the ‘Savage Dawn’ Vandal Savage crossover story is still ongoing, be surprised, because it’s continuing in Action Comics #49: Supes is out of chemo,he’s got a shiny new set of powers, and it turns out that when you give the boy from Krypton his little blue green pill to help him get over his impotence, he stops feeling sorry for himself and remembers he’s got a girlfriend.
The observant will notice that last week, Wonder Woman did a bunk and didn’t bother turning up on this ‘ere blog for her weekly round-up of comic book appearances. I don’t know why. Was it something I said?
Well, obviously I do know the real reason, as Wonder Woman is a fictional character – it was my usual end-of-month workload meaning that I didn’t have time. So I figured, what the hell, I can just roll them over to next week, forgetting, of course, that the end of the month is also now when DC Comics unleashes a deluge of Wondy titles upon us. Oops. That’s my morning gone, then.
So after the jump, in perhaps sketchier detail than I would like, you’ll find looks at: Aquaman #48, DC Comics: Bombshells #28, Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year 5 #5-6, Justice League of America #7, Sinestro #19, Superman #48, Superman-Wonder Woman #25, The Legend of Wonder Woman #11-12, Titans Hunt #4 and Wonder Woman #48. As a little bit of a game, guess which old school Wonder Woman villain and villainess make their return, as well as which old school Wonder Woman favourite made no fewer than two returns in those titles.
It’s also been a busy fortnight for Wondy in other media. We’ve had the unveiling of a new trailer for Batman v Superman, in which it’s revealed that rather than flying herself or using an invisible jet, movie-Diana uses Turkish Airlines to get about.
Whether that’s an indication that the Amazons still live in the Themyscira of Asia Minor, rather than Paradise Island, or whether it’s simply because Turkish Airlines is the movie’s official airline partner (that’s a thing, apparently), I can’t say, but we’ll find out in March.
We also have the news that Cartoon Network is working on a new series of 11-minute episodes of Justice League Action that will feature not only Kevin Conroy as the voice of Batman again, but also the rest of the Trinity – no word on who’s doing Diana’s voice, though. Surely, Susan Eisenberg’s a shoo-in?
And on top of all that excitement, we’ve got a trailer for the next animated DC movie, Justice League vs Teen Titans. Guess what happens in that.
Since I’m a few hours earlier than normal this week so ahead of Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year Five being published, there’s only a couple of titles for me to round up this week featuring Wonder Woman. Join me after the jump then for The Legend of Wonder Woman #10 and DC Comics: Bombshells.
Both of which are set during World War II but if you prefer World War I as a milieu, you can stay here and look at some more set photos from the forthcoming Wonder Woman movie, with Gal Gadot as Diana and Chris Pine as Steve Trevor. The observant will notice that despite the different setting and despite wearing her Diana Prince glasses, Wondy still hasn’t really got the hang of the whole ‘secret identity’ thing.
After Christmas’s flotilla of comics featuring Wonder Wonder, this week’s been a little more sedate. Some might even say gentle, given how romantic it’s all been. Over in The Legend of Wonder Woman #9, Steve Trevor is pining after Wondy as she takes him back to Man’s World; meanwhile, Superman and Diana are holding hands again in Action Comics #48; and in Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year Five #4, Tyrant Superman is realising just how important alternative Diana is to him, even if she’s now playing hard to get.
