Abroad in the EU

Yes, you can now watch your streaming services in the rest of the EU

Since TMINE is about to head off on holiday to France for a bit of a break, it seems appropriate to let y’all know of an exciting development. A little while ago, I pointed out how silly it was that thanks to the arcane nature of licensing agreements, I couldn’t watch while I was in Germany Babylon Berlin, a Sky Deutschland production licensed to Sky Atlantic in the UK. I had UK viewing rights, I was in Germany, but I couldn’t watch it.

However, delightful regular reader Adam Bowie pointed out in the comments that thanks to the European Commission, that situation was about to change and soon I’d be able to watch UK services abroad.

When is this glorious future set to arrive? Why, children, it’s already here! As of yesterday, the EU’s nascent digital single market introduced a new rule for streaming services: provided someone’s not actually upped-sticks and permanently moved to another EU country, they should be entitled to view all the things they can view at home in said country – without additional charges.

Sky has already emailed me to confirm it’s signed up to the rule:

EU roaming

In practice, this means that provided you’re not away from home for more than 30 days and you’re in an EU country, you should be able to watch Sky, Netflix, Amazon et al without being blocked. I”m not sure about Amazon, since it doesn’t seem to have updated its site, but I’ll test it and other services if I can this week. And if you’re on holiday or working in the EU this week and get a chance to test some services, let us know below which ones worked!

There are two things to consider here:

  1. Paradoxically, the rule only applies to services for which you pay. That means Now TV, for example, is in that et al of services I listed above. But free services aren’t included in the rule, so at the moment, the likes of iPlayer and All 4 are definitely not covered. If they do end up offering services abroad, you might end up paying for the privilege, too.
  2. You’ve got almost exactly a year to enjoy this freedom before Brexit kicks in, after which we’re out both the EU and the single market, so the rule will no longer apply. Of course, companies may choose to continue as before and given Theresa May’s currently Brexit plan consists of “let’s keep being in the EU until we’ve worked out what we actually want from this Brexit thing, because no one has a clue at the moment”, if we agree a transition agreement, we might still be in the single market for another year or so, in which case the rule will still apply.

If you want to know more, ironically (given Sky doesn’t want to say much about why it’s being so generous), The Sun actually has one of the best summaries of the whole situation and why it’s happening. I’m thinking their tech writers might be a bit younger than some of the other writers…

800 words
TMINE

TMINE is on its Easter holidays

Just a brief reminder that TMINE is now off on an Easter break until 9 April, during which not much will be happening here. But maybe a bit – so stay tuned. However, for sure, there will be some updating of both the TMINE Facebook page and Twitter feed if any exciting news pops up – such as 800 words getting a UK airdate, for example. And if I spot something media-related on my international journeys, I might even put something on the Instagram feed.

TTFN!

Cloak and Dagger
Airdates

When’s that show you mentioned starting, TMINE? Including AMO, The Crossing and Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger

Every Friday, TMINE lets you know when the latest TV shows from around the world will air in the UK

Three acquisitions this week and three premiere dates, too. Some start next week!

The Crossing

The Crossing (US: ABC; UK: Amazon)
Premiere date: Tuesday, April 3

Sci-fi show about refugees from the future. Excitingly, I previewed it this week, so I won’t elaborate further here.

AMO

AMO (Philippines: TV5; UK: Netflix)
Premiere date: Monday, April 9

The first series Netflix’s has picked up from the Philippines, AMO follows a high school student who starts dealing drugs before finding himself mixed up in a dark underworld of crime.

Cloak and Dagger

Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger (US: Freeform; UK: Amazon)
Premiere date: Friday, June 8

This is going to be airing the day after it airs in the US, so I haven’t seen it yet. Here’s Wiki’s explanation:

Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson, two teenagers from different backgrounds, acquire superpowers while forming a romantic relationship. They soon realise that their powers work better when they are together, “but their feelings for each other make their already complicated world even more challenging.”

And here’s a trailer.

Diana twats Damage
Weekly Wonder Woman

Fortnightly Wonder Woman: Wonder Woman #43, Trinity #20, The Brave and the Bold #2, Justice League #41, Damage #3

Every week (or fortnight), Weekly Wonder Woman keeps you up to date on everything involving DC Comics’ premier superheroine

WWW had to take a leave of absence last week, since I was celebrating my mother-in-law’s birthday. Diana would have approved I’m sure, just as she’ll approve of the fact that there’ll be no WWW next week either, since we’re taking my mother-in-law on holiday. Sorry about that.

Even worse, I don’t have that much time today, either, so this is going to be a bit more whistle-stop than usual. It’ll be a comprehensive whistle-stop tour of all the news and comics, but a whistle-stop one nevertheless.

Movie news

Today’s big news is that Narcos‘ Pedro Pascal has joined Wonder Woman 2. There’s no word on whom he’ll be playing, but given Cheetah is involved, is it possible he might end up playing Sebastian Ballesteros?

Also announced is a new DCEU movie focused on the New Gods. Ava DuVernay (Wrinkle in Time) is signed up to direct that, making her the first woman of colour to helm a $100m+ live-action movie. Hopefully the effects will be better than those used for Steppenwolf in Justice League. Will our Diana be in it? We’ll have to wait and see.

Otherwise, it’s just been Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds teasing each other on Twitter about who owns the Wonder Woman stance, and Gadot wishing Diana a happy birthday.

Merchandising news

Six Flags Magic Mountain theme park in the US has just unveiled a ‘drop tower’ ride that features virtual reality and some DC superheroes, including Wonder Woman.

Comics news

Following the end of Dark Nights: Metal, which was previously considered a comic book series that not even the merciful release of death would stop, Justice League is getting relaunched again. Wonder Woman’s still in it, you’ll be glad to hear, but she’s also going to be heading up Justice League Dark.

Justice League Dark

There’s multi-tasking for you.

Lastly, DC is going to be reprinting in English some manga titles involving our Diana as Batman & the Justice League Manga Vol. 1.

And that’s all the news that’s fit to print.

Comic reviews

Not so much proper reviews, as me going through each issue with a highlighter pen for some interesting or relevant moments, but what ya gonna do? Although arguably that’s all I really do anyway.

Still, after the jump, Diana dies in a fight with Black Panther Justice League #41, haggles with some gods in The Brave and the Bold #2, picks unnecessary fights in Wonder Woman #43, picks a necessary fight in Damage #3 and chops up a giant metal robot Egyptian god of mummification in Trinity #20.

Note: these product descriptions may not be entirely accurate

Alex Inc
US TV

Review: Alex, Inc 1×1 (US: ABC)

In the US: Wednesdays, 8.30/7.30c, ABC

How do you make money from podcasts? It’s an interesting question, the answer to which is usually “adverts”. But no one really makes much money that way.

One company that does seem to make money from podcasts is Gimlet Media, which was founded by journalist Alex Blumberg and produces business podcasts. I say it makes money, but really it’s just attracted a lot of seed funding and printed a load of T-shirts… while a whole bunch of people at Gimlet set up divisions and hire other people to try to work out how to make money from podcasts.

So far, their best idea seems to be: come up with ideas that they can sell to other people, who can turn them into things that actually do make money. So not podcasts then.

First up is Alex, Inc, a sitcom starring Scrubs‘s Zach Braff that’s based on Gimlet Media’s ‘StartUp’ podcast. Warning: you are just about to fall down a rabbit hole. What was StartUp about? It was all about Blumberg’s own attempt to launch Gimlet Media.

I wonder if the first season will end with Zach Braff agreeing to play the role of Zach Braff in a new TV series that’s all about the making of Alex, Inc.
