Weekly Wonder Woman: The Legend of Wonder Woman #2, DC Bombshells #18

As with last week, most excitement for our Amazon Queen stemmed from movie news. But fashion got a look in, too, funnily enough.

We started by getting our first glimpse of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman in Wonder Woman, courtesy of Gadot herself.

The observant will note the presence of Big Ben in the background. Whether that’s simply because that’s where Wonder Woman will be fighting a wartime menace (Ares, the Nazis, AN Other baddie) or because this is the incorporation of the nu52 orthodoxy that Diana lives in London in modern times, I can’t say – I suspect we’ll have to wait until the movie is released.

We also got a press release, too.

Principal photography is underway on Warner Bros. Pictures’ Wonder Woman feature film, the highly anticipated action adventure from director Patty Jenkins (“Monster,” AMC’s “The Killing”), starring Gal Gadot (the “Fast & Furious” movies) in the role of Diana Prince/Wonder Woman. The character will make her big screen debut this spring in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” but the new film will mark her first time headlining a feature.

The film also stars Chris Pine (the “Star Trek” films) as Captain Steve Trevor, Robin Wright (“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” Netflix’s “House of Cards”), Danny Huston (“Clash of the Titans,” “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”), David Thewlis (the “Harry Potter” films, “The Theory of Everything”), Ewen Bremner (“Exodus: Gods and Kings,” “Snowpiercer”), Saïd Taghmaoui (“American Hustle”), Elena Anaya (“The Skin I Live In”) and Lucy Davis (“Shaun of the Dead”).

The film is being produced by Charles Roven, Zack Snyder and Deborah Snyder, with Richard Suckle, Stephen Jones, Wesley Coller, Geoff Johns and Rebecca Roven serving as executive producers.

Joining Jenkins behind the camera are director of photography Matthew Jensen (“Chronicle,” “Fantastic Four,” HBO’s “Game of Thrones”), Oscar-nominated production designer Aline Bonetto (“Amélie,” “A Very Long Engagement,” “Pan”), and Oscar-winning editor Martin Walsh (“Chicago,” “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit,” “V for Vendetta”), and Oscar-winning costume designer Lindy Hemming (“The Dark Knight” trilogy, “Topsy-Turvy”).

Principal photography will take place on location in the UK, France and Italy.

Set to open in 2017, the Wonder Woman feature film is based on characters created by William Moulton Marston, appearing in comic books published by DC Entertainment. It will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

How wonderful.

Of course, this isn’t the first effort to get Wonder Woman onto the big screen, although it’s certainly the most successful. One previous effort was George Miller’s Justice League: Mortal, which was to feature Megan Gale as Wonder Woman. And it’s been revealed this week that she would have looked like this:

Of course, there was also an earlier attempt by one Mr Joss Whedon to develop a Wonder Woman movie. That got as far as a script and if you happen to be in Manhattan Beach, California, on December 5, you can watch the whole thing performed in costume. Maybe.

And if all that weren’t enough, Gwyneth Paltrow and Valentino are teaming up to develop their own Wonder Woman clothing line:

But back in the comic book world, last week, things were looking a little better for our Wondy with two appearances, which we’ll be perusing after the jump: DC Bombshells #18 and The Legend of Wonder Woman #2.

Weekly Wonder Woman: The Legend of Wonder Woman #1

Star chairs on Wonder Woman

The talk of the Wonder Woman πόλη this week was, of course, the pics provided by French actor Saïd Taghmaoui from behind the scenes of the Wonder Woman movie, currently filming in this ‘ere town of London. Taghmaoui, who claims to be playing a superhero/good guy in the movie (delete according to preferred translation), was pictured in period costume with that Chris Pine, who plays Steve Trevor in the film. Confirmation, in case we needed it, that the movie will be at least partly set in at least one earlier time period, some rumours suggesting there may be as many as three time periods featuring the immortal, ageless Wondy in the movie.

Things were a little quieter in the world of comics, however, with our Diana largely absent from the DC Universe(s), even in those comics also set during the Second World War (DC Bombshells). 

However, slightly earlier than expected, probably due to DC’s habit of releasing new comics digitally some months in advance of their collected print publication, we have The Legend of Wonder Woman. Originally scheduled for January, it was originally assumed to be a prequel to either the nu52 or the forthcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, in which our Amazon queen gets to make her movie debut. However, given that

  1. In the movie and the nu52, she’s the daughter of Zeus 
  2. In The Legend of Wonder Woman, she’s made from clay, as per Volumes 1-3

That seems unlikely, but not impossible. All the same, we’ll have a look at it after the jump. We’ll also look at some very important advice to the Amazons from Zeus. Very important. So important, he said it in Greek. Can you guess what it might be?

Weekly Wonder Woman: Detective Comics #46

It’s virtually all quiet on the Amazon Front over at DC at the moment. The usual Wondy monthlies aren’t due for a couple of weeks. On the weeklies side, Injustice: Gods Among Us is between years; the release dates for the next Wonder Woman ’77 and Sensation Comics are ‘TBD’ (ie possibly cancelled); and DC Bombshells was too busy with Mera (now aka ‘Aquawoman’) rescuing some plunky, ahistorical Brits to bother with Diana. There’s not even a Justice League: Darkseid War special to tide us over.

It’s all a bit suspicious and disheartening.

Anyway, that means we’re down to a single, rather bonkers cameo appearance over in Detective Comics #46. We can talk about that after the jump.

Weekly Wonder Woman: Wonder Woman #45, Superman-Wonder Woman #22, Justice League #45, Sensation Comics #50-51

The observant among you will have noticed that there was no Weekly Wonder Woman last week. That wasn’t because our Wondy wasn’t in any comics – quite the contrary, in fact – but simply because of the time I had available, I had to choose between WWW and WHYBW, and tele won. Sorry, Di.

I didn’t get any complaint letters, though. I don’t know why. I’m assuming it’s because you were too busy crying to be able to put fingers to keyboard.

Don’t worry, though. Brush those tears away. WWW is back. And given that there was only one new issue with Diana in last week, it’s not exactly a Herculean task to do two weeks in one go.

So after the jump, we’ll be looking at the latest issues of the Big Four: Wonder Woman, Superman-Wonder Woman, Justice League and Sensation Comics Featuring Wonder Woman. Only one of them has a bad joke from an old episode of Doctor Who in it.

Still no Diana in DC Bombshells again, though. This is tantamount to false advertising, now.

Weekly Wonder Woman: Sensation Comics #49, Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year Four #24

Last week, Diana, Queen of the Amazons, made a lot of appearances on the covers of comics, but didn’t actually show up inside many of them. She was on the cover of Justice League of America #4, fighting some alien priests with Aquaman. 

But did she turn up inside to fight some alien priests with Aquaman? Not at all. And as for Aquaman, he was watching tele with Mera instead.

Talk about misadvertising. 

Meanwhile, over on the cover of DC Bombshells, Diana was ready for action with her lightning-equipped, Volume 3, Gail Simone bracelets.

Was she inside using them? Nope. It was just Batwoman and Italian Catwoman flirting with each other in 1940s Berlin at a party of demon-worshipping Nazis. Alternative universe Dullsville that.

For a bit of contrast, while she wasn’t on the cover of the first issue of limited series nu52/alternative reality Convergence spectacular Superman: Lois & Clark, she was certainly inside. Unfortunately, it was part of yet another flashback to that first Justice League storyline involving Darkseid, so that author Dan Jurgens could make the point that the nu52 universe was a bit gloomy compared to the pre-Flashpoint one.

Behind you! 

Reasurringly, despite those mere glimpses, we had a couple of proper appearances, too. The first was in the final return of Sensation Comics Featuring Wonder Woman, which has been cancelled due to a bit of (alleged) internal politics at DC. In its place is coming a prequel series, The Legend of Wonder Woman, starting in January. Prequel to what, you might ask? Well, it’s definitely a young woman on Themyscira and the story of how she ended up coming to Man’s World. But is it a prequel to the nu52/DCYou Wonder Woman’s arrival or is it a prequel to Batman V Superman, due out in March?

Dunno, but I’m sure time will tell.

Until then, we do have a few more Sensation Comics to enjoy. The first sees the return of an old enemy. Can you guess who?

It’s Cheetah. It’s always Cheetah. What’s the matter with you? How was that not your first guess?

Anyway, in this alternative reality, maybe Cheetah isn’t as bad as everyone thought. You can find out more about that after the jump.

Also after the jump is the final installment of Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year Four. Last issue, Zeus was facing off against Highfather in a battle for supremacy among gods for planet Earth. Can you imagine how exciting it’s all going to be and how central Diana will be to the plot?

Well, no. They’ve only gone and Twilighted us.
