Review: Gavin and Stacey – Series 1

WARNING: If you are married to a blonde woman from South Wales who’s lived in London for a while and has lost her accent and started talking like an English person, you might find that after exposing her to this DVD for two or more episodes, she exhibits certain behaviours. Her accent might return; she might start saying "lush", "by here" instead of "here" or "whereto" instead of "where"; and she might start calling you with "Oh! Rob!" These effects can last anything up to three days or more, during which SHE WILL BE UNAWARE SHE IS DOING ANY OF THIS. It’ll be very endearing though.

Gavin And Stacey

The thing about award-winning comedy shows is that no one’s going to watch them if you stick them on a network primarily devoted to Two Pints of Lager and shows like Can Fat Teens Hunt?.

Had we known there was a show called Gavin and Stacey in which a blonde woman from South Wales meets, falls in love with and marries a dark-haired guy from SE England, we’d have watched every single episode and repeat from the very first moment – it’ll be the closest we get to a biopic on Hallmark. Instead, it’s not until the second series (which is brilliant) that we found out about it. Heaven knows how those awards people came across it.

Although BBC3 will no doubt be repeating the first series again approximately five times a day (seven times a day if it wins any more awards) once the second series finishes, we decided – as might you, gentle reader – to give that first series a go by buying it on DVD. If you are considering it, here’s a handily timed reviewed to help you decide whether to spend your hard-earned money or not. Although it’s only £8 on Amazon – bar-gain!

Season finale: Ashes to Ashes

I know it’s a bit late, but I was away over the weekend and didn’t have the time to string together a review until now.

So why am I bothering? Well, there’s the fact that BBC3 jessied around the schedules again so there was no Torchwood finale to laugh at (although, given James Marsters was on Smallville this week as well, I’m not sure the TV set could have taken the resulting Marsters overload if it had been).

But I also wanted to sing you a song. It’s from that wonderful comedy show Absolutely, which should be coming out on DVD any minute now. It goes like this:

I’m clever, so terribly clever
So clever, so terribly clever…

Review: The Apprentice 4×1

In the UK: Wednesdays, 9pm, BBC1

Sir Alan’s back. Hasn’t he learnt his lesson yet? Honestly.

You take a group of salespeople, who, let’s face it, have an above average chance of being the scum of the earth and ask them to apply to be on a reality TV show. Since the good ones will all be earning very nice salaries at very nice companies, only the ones not doing so well (and who will therefore lie on their CV) and the most arrogant, preening twannocks with pebbles for brains will apply.

They get whittled down by the production team into the best group of ‘personalities’ possible, the ones guaranteed to be obnoxious, evil, sociopathic, incompetent idiots, usually with the kind of accents that can start class war in 70% of London boroughs as soon as they open their mouths.

And then Sir Alan has to work out which of these creatures from the black sales lagoon he wants to employ by the end of the series.

I don’t envy him.

Review: Miss Guided 1×1-1×3

In the US: Thursdays, 8/7c, ABC
In the UK: Not yet acquired

A third-episode verdict without a first-episode review? What’s going on here?

Well, if certain US networks want to air their new comedy shows so quickly that I haven’t even finished watching the first episodes before the third episodes have come and gone (and the show’s been cancelled in the case of The Return of Jezebel James), what do they expect?

It saves a bit of time, mind.

Anyway: Miss Guided.

Did you like school? Yes?

You jock douchebag. School sucked. Everyone knows that.

Of course, if you knew then what you know now, it would have been so much easier for you to survive its many trials, wouldn’t it? So here’s a question: would you go back to your old High School as a teacher and conquer those demons? And have you really changed as much as you think you have?
