In Conversation With Jeff Pope

Date: Thursday 29 August
Timings: 6.30pm for a 6.45pm start

As his latest drama, A Confession, airs on ITV in August, join writer Jeff Pope in conversation with journalist Caroline Frost as he takes us behind the scenes of the making of this new detective drama.

Starring Martin Freeman and Imelda Staunton, A Confession is based on the true story of Detective Superintendent Steve Fulcher, who breached police protocol to catch a killer, costing him his career.

As the writer of dramas including Mrs Biggs, Little Boy Blue and Cilla, Jeff will also discuss highlights from his award-winning career. Filled with clips and stories, this promises to be an evening not to be missed.

Join The South Bank Show‘s Melvyn Bragg in conversation with TV writers Jed Mercurio, Steve Pemberton, Reece Shearsmith and Heidi Thomas as they discuss the ideas and influences that inspire their work, how they go about writing their scripts and how they reach out to such substantial audiences.

Edited and presented by Melvyn Bragg, The South Bank Show is the longest-running arts show on British television and has showcased both high art and popular culture to a mass audience for over 40 years.

British TV drama is currently commanding huge audiences – and has become one of our main cultural talking points. The subjects of the new South Bank series are Jed Mercurio, the writer and showrunner of Line of Duty and Bodyguard; Jack Thorne*, writer of Skins, National Treasure, This Is England and the theatre production, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child; Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith, writers and stars of The League of Gentleman, Psychoville and the multi-award-winning Inside No. 9 and Heidi Thomas, creator and writer of Call the Midwife, who has also adapted Cranford and Little Women.

An evening not to be missed, this event will give an exclusive insight into how the best British TV drama writers work.  There will also be an opportunity for a Q&A session with the panel after the discussion.

*Please note that Jack Thorne is unavailable to attend this event due to the opening night of his new play.

So, new feature. I’ve spotted there’s this thing called the Royal Television Society (RTS) and that they do TV-related events that are open to the public, as well as to members. Brainwave – why don’t I tell y’all about them, like I do with the BFI, BAFTA and Institut Français?

There are a few events scheduled for this month already, but I thought I’d start off with one you might stand a chance of getting tickets to.

Why We Love Food

Date: Tuesday 21 May

Cookery and food programming have been a successful staple of schedules for as long as there has been TV. Reflecting the nations tastes and sensibilities over the years, it seamlessly moves from practical to flamboyant; competitive to journalistic, attracting broad and loyal audiences year after year.

One of the richest genres on television it’s launched celebrity chefs as famous as movie stars, instigated political change and gripped the nation with show stoppers and soggy bottoms.

So what is it about food on television that is so compelling? What are the must have ingredients for a successful food show and just how important is the food itself? In world of Netflix and Instagram how is the genre evolving and who will be the big names of the future?

To discuss we have Channel 4’s Head of Features & Formats, Sarah Lazenby, Managing Director of Shine TV (makers of MasterChef), Tanya Shaw, restauranteur, food writer and presenter and cook, Nisha Katona MBE and cook, bestselling author and champion of sustainable, nourishing food Melissa Hemsley.
