Every couple of weeks, TMINE flags up what new TV events BAFTA is holding around the UK

A couple of new TV events have been announced by BAFTA this week, one in February, one in March, both ‘Masterclasses’.

Masterclass: The Crown

Monday, 26 February 2018 – 7:00pm
Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA), The Mall, London SW1Y 5AH

The team behind the BAFTA-winning Netflix series will discuss bringing the historical drama to our screens.

The Crown chronicles the reign of Queen Elizabeth II and the major historical events that defined the second half of the 20th Century.

Join creator Peter Morgan, Executive Producer Suzanne Mackie, Director Ben Caron and actress Vanessa Kirby (Princess Margaret) as they reflect and discuss the story behind first two seasons.

Kay Mellor

Masterclass: Kay Mellor on Screenwriting

Monday, 19 March 2018 – 7:00pm
Princess Anne Theatre, BAFTA, 195 Piccadilly

The BAFTA-winning writer will share her inspirations and insights into her craft.

Kay’s credits include Band of Gold, Fat Friends and the recent dramas Love, Lies & Records and Girlfriends.

Kay will be in conversation with Kate Rowland.

What TV’s on at the BFI in March 2018? Including The City and the City and High & Dry

Every month, TMINE lets you know what TV the BFI will be presenting at the South Bank in London

Slightly slimmer pickings than in February, but there’s still a decent selection of showings at the BFI in March. There’s a slightly feminist theme to events, with a Women in TV season kicking off with Nicola Shindler, as well as an exploration of TV girlfriends. Ingmar Bergman’s TV work gets a look in, too, and there’s a showing of Mark of Cain.

On top of that, there are two TV previews: E4’s new castaway sitcom High & Dry and BBC Two’s adaptation of China Miéville The City and the City.

Preview: Save Me + Q&A

A preview of the new Sky Original Production followed by a Q&A with writer and actor Lennie James, actor Stephen Graham, director Nick Murphy and Anne Mensah, Head of Drama at Sky.

Save Me follows unlikely hero Nelson ‘Nelly’ Rowe (Lennie James) a man whose world is turned upside down when he is arrested and accused of kidnapping the 13-year-old daughter he barely knew existed.

With Jody’s mother Claire (Suranne Jones) convinced of his guilt, Nelly sets out to clear his name, find the real perpetrator and save his daughter. With the help of his community and his drinking pal Melon (Stephen Graham), Nelly will stop at nothing in his quest for the truth.

From the award-winning producers of Line of Duty, Save Me is a six-part Sky Original Production written by and starring Lennie James (The Walking Dead), directed by Nick Murphy (The Last Kingdom) with music by Dustin O’Halloran (Lion).

We will be screening the first two episodes in the series, with a total run time of 90 minutes.

Totally Serialized: Le bureau des légendes (The Bureau) – saison 3

Although I’m not 100% sure it’s still running its Totally Serialized events, the Institut français du Royaume-Uni is still being very marvellous and running French TV events in London. To save me some hassle, let’s pretend it’s still called Totally Serialized so I don’t have to rename this section.

Office admin out the way, appropriately enough, the first ‘Totally Serialized’ of 2018 is a showing of the first two episodes of the third season of Le bureau des légendes (The Bureau) (France: Canal+; UK: Amazon), as well as a Q&A with producer Alex Berger.

If you were hooked by The Bureau, rejoice, here comes the UK premiere of the new season! Based on real-life accounts by former spies, this French addictive series depicts a branch of clandestine undercover agents, dispatched in key and hostile locations around the world. Offering a new perspective on intelligence agencies and intricate geopolitical issues, this third season centres on “Malotru” (Mathieu Kassovitz), who is taken hostage by ISIS.

Followed by a Q&A with Alex Berger, Producer of The Bureau

It’s taking place on Wednesday 24th January at 8.30pm at the Institut in London and you can book tickets online – seats are still available.

Incidentally, I don’t know if the Institut is misspeaking or not, but the Tweet I spotted about the event talks about it being a preview, suggesting that the full season might finally be coming to Amazon…

Every month, TMINE lets you know what TV the BFI will be presenting at the South Bank in London

February’s a pretty full month by the looks of it at the BFI, with a couple of impressive seasons, as well as two TV previews. The main attraction is a season of programmes directed by Waris Hussein – best known as the first ever director of Doctor Who, but who’s built up an impressive portfolio of shows from both sides of the Atlantic over the years, including a rare acting foray by Barry Manilow in Copacabana. There are also showings of Ingmar Bergman’s original versions of Face to Face and Scenes from a Marriage from Swedish TV.

The two previews? The sequel to Kenneth Clark’s original Civilisation, Civilisations, and the return to British TV of John Cleese and Alison Steadman in Hold the Sunset. All that after the jump, where we can merengue and do the cha-cha.
