Every couple of weeks so often, TMINE flags up what new TV events BAFTA is holding around the UK

It’s been a while since the previous BAFTA post on TMINE, principally because BAFTA hasn’t been doing anything TV-related. However, there’s four – count ’em – new events lined up air between now and the first week of July, so let’s look at them.

Gone Fishing

TV Preview: Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing

A preview of the new BBC Two series followed by a Q&A Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse, in conversation with Charlie Higson.

Lifelong friends Paul Whitehouse and Bob Mortimer have more in common than just their love of comedy – they have both recently suffered from heart disease and directly faced their own mortality.

We observe them as they re-connect with each other and share their personal and often hilarious experiences of life while testing the parameters of true friendship… on a soggy riverbank.

Experienced angler Paul takes Bob to some of the most tranquil and naturally beautiful places in the UK to try to teach him the peaceful art of fishing, while Bob reveals his new found culinary skills by cooking health conscious meals for Paul.

In this funny and poignant six part series they candidly discuss everything from showbusiness to solitude to relationships and romance, while trying to catch some of the most significant species of fish in the country.

This is as much an insight into the hearts and minds of two of the UK’s best loved comics as it is about capturing the extreme exhilaration and occasional monotony of one of the most popular past times in the UK.

Staircase

TV Preview: The Staircase

Thursday, 14 June 2018 – 6:45pm
Princess Anne Theatre, 195 Piccadilly, London

A preview of a new episode of the compelling story of Michael Peterson, a crime novelist accused of killing wife Kathleen after she is found dead at the bottom of a staircase in their home, and the 16 year judicial battle that followed. Followed by a Q+A with creator and director Jean-Xavier de Lestrade.

On December 9, 2001, in Durham, North Carolina, a 911 call summoned police to Kathleen Peterson’s house, where they discovered her lifeless body at the foot of a staircase. Her husband, Michael, a local public figure and successful novelist, quickly becomes the prime suspect. In October 2003, as his distraught children look on, Michael Peterson is sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his wife. Twelve years after his five-month trial ends with a life sentence, four years after a startling twist wins him release under house arrest, Michael Peterson now faces his final trial.

Netflix will air three brand new episodes alongside the original 2004 series. We will be screening a recap episode (run time 25 minutes) followed by episode 12 (run time 45 minutes).

This Country

Craft of Comedy Festival: This Country screening

Saturday, 16 June 2018 – 10:25am
Venue Cymru, Llandudno

A screening of the hit BBC Three comedy exploring the lives of young people in modern rural Britain, focusing on cousins Kerry and Kurtan and their lives in the Cotswolds.

This Country was recently awarded the Breakthrough Talent award at this year’s BAFTA Craft Awards and is nominated in multiple categories at the BAFTA Television Awards taking place in May.

There is an allocation of free tickets to this screening exclusively for BAFTA Cymru members. Please email Vicki to reserve your place.

BAFTA Rocliffe New Writing Showcase: TV Comedy

Monday, 2 July 2018 – 7:00pm
Princess Anne Theatre, BAFTA, 195 Piccadilly

A showcase of three TV comedy script extracts by emerging UK writing talent, selected by an industry jury.

Featuring industry guests producer Lindsay Hughes (Hunderby, Gavin and Stacey) and writer Robert Popper (Friday Night Dinner, Look Around You) who will critique three winning scripts performed by professional actors in front of a live audience as well as sharing insights into their own working processes.

The format selects three 10-minute script extracts from applications sent in by emerging writing talent from all over the country and the pieces have been chosen by industry experts.

Every month, TMINE lets you know what TV the BFI will be presenting at the South Bank in London

No huge TV seasons for the BFI in June, but there are a few choice pickings if you look through the programme. The biggest of these is the world premiere of the second season finale of Westworld, complete with Q&A with showrunners/creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan. Get booking quickly on that one, I would. On top of that, there’s a preview of BBC Four’s forthcoming Women’s Monologues, a complete showing of the little-repeated history of the Suffragette movement, Shoulder to Shoulder, a free showing of Windrush-generation drama Small Island, and an early documentary about the NHS, On Call to a Nation. Every month, TMINE lets you know what TV the BFI will be presenting at the South Bank in London

It’s slightly slim pickings in May for TV at the BFI, but I’ve combed through the programme and found a few delights. There’s a whole day dedicated to Spike Milligan, with three different sessions featuring both his films (short and long) and TV shows. The Hitch-Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy has been up-rezzed for Blu-Ray and the first three enhanced episodes will be getting an airing, together with a Q&A with various people ‘associated with the show’. There’s also a couple of previews of the new series of Clangers and Poldark (yes, Aidan Turner will be there), and Joan Bakewell will also be talking about the May 1968 uprising in France. As you do.

Every month, TMINE lets you know what TV the BFI will be presenting at the South Bank in London

My God, it’s full of films. Yep, the BFI’s April schedule is basically a stream of films. Fortunately, fellow TV lovers, there are two TV events. The first is the rescheduled ‘Missing Believed Wiped’ special from January, which will feature a documentary about Rod Stewart made before he was famous. Guess what – Rod Stewart’ll be there to watch it with you.

The second is a preview of the first episode of the fourth (and final) season of no less a show than Bron/Broen (The Bridge), which is making the move from BBC Four to BBC Two later this year. Guess what – Sofia Helin’ll be there to watch it with you.

Ordeal by Innocence

TV Preview: Ordeal By Innocence + Q&A with Sandra Goldbacher, Sarah Phelps, Morven Christie, Gaynor Holmes and James Prichard

Wealthy philanthropist Rachel Argyll is murdered at her family estate Sunny Point. Her adopted son Jack Argyll, a young delinquent, is arrested for her murder. He vehemently protests his innocence. Eighteen months later, Dr Arthur Calgary, a scientist, walks onto the velvety lawns of Sunny Point claiming to have just returned from an expedition to the Arctic. Even more extraordinary is his claim to hold the alibi that can prove Jack’s innocence.

But Jack died in prison before the case could come to trial, and the Argyll family is reluctant to dig up the secrets of the past. Rachel’s widower Leo is about to remarry his secretary Gwenda and none of Rachel’s other adopted children Mary, Mickey, Tina or Hester, nor longstanding housekeeper Kirsten, is willing to reopen that most horrendous chapter of their lives.

However, the shattering implications of Calgary’s story are too big to avoid; if he is telling the truth then the wrong person was arrested for Rachel’s murder. And if Jack was not the killer, then it must have been somebody else at Sunny Point.

This screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Sandra Goldbacher, writer Sarah Phelps, actor Morven Christie, BBC Scotland Commissioner Gaynor Holmes and James Prichard, Chairman & CEO Agatha Christie Ltd. Networking drinks will follow the Q&A.

TV Preview: Deep State + Q&A

A preview of Fox’s new original espionage drama followed by a Q&A with creator and showrunner Matthew Parkhill, actor Joe Dempsie, Executive Producer Hilary Bevan Jones and VP for Scripted Fox Networks Group Sara Johnson.

Deep State follows Max Easton (Mark Strong), an ex-spy whose past comes back to haunt him when he’s convinced by the head of a covert MI6/CIA team to return to the field and avenge the death of his son Harry (Joe Dempsie). Max finds himself at the heart of a dangerous game, as powerful corporations demonstrate the great lengths they are willing to go to in order to bury their secrets.

Co-created, directed and written by Matthew Parkhill (Rogue) this is Fox Network Group’s first regionally scripted commission and is produced by Endor Productions. We will be screening the first 2 episodes in the series, with a total run time of 90 minutes.

In conversation with presenter Sandi Toksvig, Sir David will highlight some of his most memorable and significant career moments, the impact of new technologies on wildlife programming and the craft behind some of the most-loved, entertaining, and socially impactful natural history shows ever made.
