Every Tuesday, TMINE flags up what new TV events BAFTA is holding around the UK

BAFTA events are coming thick and fast for March now, with not just one but two to add to the previously announced preview of Adult Material. For a bit of variety, one’s in London and the other’s in Glasgow.

Preview: Normal People

A preview of the new BBC drama followed by a Q&A with key cast and crew.

Adapted by Sally Rooney alongside writers Alice Birch and Mark O’Rowe, from Rooney’s novel of the same name, Normal People tracks the tender but complicated relationship of Marianne (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and Connell (Paul Mescal), from the end of their school days in small-town west of Ireland to their undergraduate years at Trinity College.

At school, Connell is well liked and popular, while Marianne is lonely, proud and intimidating. When Connell comes to pick up his mother from her cleaning job at Marianne’s house, a strange and indelible connection grows between the two teenagers – one they are determined to conceal. A year later, they’re both studying in Dublin and Marianne has found her feet in a new social world, leaving Connell hanging at the side lines, shy and uncertain.

Join us for an exclusive preview of the first episode of forthcoming BBC drama The Nest.

A wealthy couple and a teenage girl make a pact that will change all of their lives forever, in a new five-part drama from BAFTA award winning writer Nicole Taylor.

This screening will be followed by a Q&A with cast and crew.  

Networking drinks will take place in the Everyman bar afterwards.

We’re heading into March now with BAFTA events, of which we now have the first.

Preview: Adult Material

Tuesday, 10 March 2020 – 7:00pm

The May Fair Hotel, Stratton St, Mayfair, London W1J 8LT

A preview of Channel 4’s four-part drama followed by a Q&A with writer Lucy Kirkwood and actor Hayley Squires.

Written by Lucy Kirkwood (Chimerica) and directed by Dawn Shadforth (Trust). The series follows Jolene Dollar (Hayley Squires), a regular mother of three, who is the proud breadwinner of the family. However, Jolene does not have the most conventional of careers: she is one of the top porn performers in the UK.

Adult Material ventures into Jolene’s world – to a place that influences all of our lives, whether we know it or not. Interrogating what’s real, what’s fake, what’s up for sale and the impact that these things have on the individuals involved.

The cast includes Siena Kelly (Vanity Fair), Kerry Godliman (After Life), Joe Dempsie (Game of Thrones), Julian Ovenden (Downton Abbey), Phil Daniels (A Very Very Very Dark Matter) and Rupert Everett (The Happy Prince).

A quick last-minute addition to the schedule from BAFTA that’s a tad exclusive – you have to be a member and it’s in Port Talbot for a change (that’s where Bang is set/filmed).

Preview: Bang Series 2

Thursday, 13 February 2020 – 7:00pm

This event is for members and invited guests only. The producers of the BAFTA Cymru and Celtic Media Festival award-winning S4C drama series Bang are delighted to invite you to the premiere of the second series.

The pioneering bilingual series returns to S4C this month with David Hayman and Alexander Vlahos joining cast regulars Jacob Ifan, Catrin Stewart, Jack Parry-Jones, Nia Roberts and Suzanne Packer.

The crime drama sees Sam return from prison while his sister Gina investigates a series of murders related to a historic rape case.

Bang is written by Roger Williams, directed by Philip John and produced by Catrin Lewis Defis for Joio.

It is an S4C Original supported by Welsh Government and distributed by Banijay Rights.

Please note, this preview will have English subtitles and the episode includes strong language with scenes some viewers might find distressing.

The screening will be followed by a drinks reception – this event is for members and invited guests only.

Some nice new TV things to buy: StarzPlay and The Year of the Sex Olympics

So StarzPlay is quietly shaping up to have some of the best imported content in the UK. There’s Counterpart, Pennyworth, Doom Patrol, Castle Rock, Mr Mercedes, The Rook, Perpetual Grace LTD, and Four Weddings and a Funeral from the US, while from Europe, there’s the likes of Instinto, Sanctuary, Rig 45 and Monster.

And that’s just for starters – why only this very day, it became the UK home of Power and its spin-offs.

It used to have a drawback, though. Until recently, you had to have a subscription to Amazon Prime first, after which you had to take out a second subscription to StarzPlay itself, in order to watch it. That was a slight faff and not cheap, if you weren’t already an Amazon Prime member.

However, it’s now available on Apple TV(+), Android and iOS via its own app, as well as regular web browsers, so you can use any of those apps. Unfortunately, if you want to use your Roku, you’ll need to use the Amazon route in the UK, since although there’s a US Roku channel, there isn’t a UK equivalent.

Another reason to go the Amazon route, though: you can now sign up for a three-month trial at Amazon for 99p/month. Three quid for all for three months is pretty reasonable, I’d have said, wouldn’t you? And you can’t do that through any of the other usual sign-up means.

Anyway, you’ve got until March 31st to sign up for the trial, after which it’ll be back to £4.99/month as usual. What have you got to lose? Apart from £2.97.

Meanwhile, TMINE god Nigel Kneale‘s ground-breaking play The Year of the Sex Olympics is being reissued by the BFI, a mere 16 years after its previous release. That’s a snip at £14.99 but it won’t be available until April 20.

An anticipator of the reality TV of our own day and age, it sees Leonard Rossiter trying to find something even more interesting than the constant diet of porn with which the masses are currently being placated – and he hits upon real-life as the option. Unfortunately, real-life is actually a bit dull, so then he thinks adding a murderer to the mix might boost the ratings.

If you’re cunning, you’ll spot the esteemed Brian Cox. No not that one, the other one.

Join the RTS on Thursday 27 February for an exclusive screening of season two of Two Brothers Pictures’ hit ITV drama series Liar. 

Following the screening of the first episode, there will be a Q&A with the producers Harry and Jack Williams and stars Joanne Froggatt and Katherine Kelly.

About the Show

Three weeks after damning evidence was uncovered proving Andrew Earlham sexually assaulted nineteen women, his body is found in the Kent marshes. As one of Andrew’s more recent victims, Laura Nielson can’t help feeling relieved by the news of his death. The last three weeks spent knowing Andrew was somewhere out there and missing have not been easy.

Yet the seaside community is rocked when the case quickly becomes a murder investigation. Out of town officer DI Karen Renton is put in charge of the case, and together with DS Rory Maxwell, they begin to unpack the events of the three crucial weeks leading up to Andrew’s death.

The news cast a shadow over those who knew Andrew, all of whom, like Laura, are trying to move on with their lives.

As the search to find Andrew’s killer gains momentum, the community will be forced to face up to the secrets of their recent past, secrets many of them hope will stay buried. Soon, Laura finds herself thrown deep in the mire of Andrew’s destructive path, and once again must fight to be believed.
