Review: Alphas 1×1

Alphas on SyFy

In the US: Mondays, 10/9c, SyFy. Available on SyFy.com

Been missing Heroes? Want something that’s almost identical but a bit more average – doesn’t quite hit Heroes‘ heights but doesn’t hit its depths?

Then have I the show for you. It’s about a group of different people from different backgrounds who have extraordinary abilities. They all come together to help solve crimes and fight a greater evil. They’re not very interesting people, but they have some cool super powers and the plotting is actually pretty clever.

I’m sure it’ll do… averagely. Here’s a trailer.

Review: Falling Skies 1×1-1×2

falling skies, steven spielberg, tnt, noah wyle, tnt, skitters, moon bloodgood, scifi shows, sci-fi shows, sci fi shows, aliens

In the US: Sundays, 10/9c, TNT
In Canada: Wednesdays, 10pm, Superchannel. Starts July 6
In the UK: Tuesdays, 9pm, FX. Starts July 5

There’s something about knowing that Steven Spielberg is the exec producer of a TV show that means you know pretty much exactly what you’re going to get. It started with Earth 2, in which a lot of very dull people, all by themselves, have to survive against the odds and face slightly scary aliens while looking after their wee little moppets, who are just ever so endearing. That was pretty much the template.

Now we have Falling Skies, in which 90% of the world’s population is killed by aliens, leaving a group of very dull people, including Noah Wylie in The Librarian mode, stuck in Boston, having to survive against the odds and face slightly scary aliens while looking after their wee little moppets, who are just so endearing.

Are there any differences, you might ask? Well, with the likes of Greg Beeman and Mark Verheiden on board, you’d suspect a hint of Heroes to the whole thing and you’d be right – out of a cast of about one hundred men, there are roughly three women, two of them blonde.

Here’s a trailer for Falling Skies, aka War of the Worlds meets Earth 2.

Review: Franklin and Bash 1×1

Franklin and Bash

In the US: Wednesdays, 9/8c, TNT

Crazy, unconventional lawyers who don’t play by the rules and who fight for the little guy! Yay! That’s what we need more of, isn’t it? That hasn’t been done to death with Eli Stone, Harry’s Law, The Deep End and The Defenders in just the last three years alone, has it?

Why no, Sir! In fact, what the genre of crazy, unconventional lawyers who don’t play by the rules and who fight for the little guy has in fact been missing all these years – something you probably hadn’t realised until TNT decided to tell you this by thrusting new show Franklin and Bash and assorted breasts in your face – is crazy, unconventional fratboy lawyers who don’t play by the rules and who fight for the little guy.

Yes, Franklin and Bash are the kind of lawyers who’ll get women to take their clothes off in court and jiggle their breasts at the jury, who’ll hit on women they work with and have naked hot tub parties, in a show that tries vainly and pathetically to be funny, while Malcolm McDowell phones in his part in between lighting cigars with the vast stack of dollar bills he must be earning.

Sigh. Cue the trailer.
