Nice try, Virgin Press Office, but…

The thing about the Press Offices of TV companies is that they want you to write nice things about their programmes. To do that, they give you nice things, hoping to persuade you.

Take Virgin Media, which has just acquired Bravo (US)’s Imposters. Now, I’ve written reviews of this already (Episodes: 1-2, 3), so you might wonder why they’re bothering – it’s almost as if they’ve just got a list of potential media outlets to target but don’t actually read them so don’t know that TMINE’s raison d’être is to tell people about shows before they arrive in the UK.

Anyway, for about three days now, they’ve been trying to deliver a free thing to me and today, it’s arrived. As is par for the course, they wouldn’t tell me what they were trying to deliver BECAUSE THAT WOULD SPOIL THE AWESOME SURPRISE! They wouldn’t even tell me it was about Imposters, although since…

  1. They originally wanted to deliver yesterday
  2. They announced the acquisition yesterday

…it wasn’t a hard guess.

Inside, is a piece of card explaining all about Imposters, even though I’ve already reviewed three episodes of it. There’s also my Imposters name generator! Gosh – I’m Rio Badger, apparently.

But the main gift designed to sway me is a shiny tin full of customised Biscuiteers biscuits.

Imposters

Which is all very lovely and someone’s obviously gone to a lot of effort – albeit because it’s part of their job and someone’s paying them to do it (aka “capitalism as we know it”).

But (and I don’t mean to sound churlish or to in any way discourage Press Offices everywhere from sending me free things), I’ve spent a bit of time toing and froing with the Press Office discussing delivery schedules, addresses, et al, for something that’s absolutely useless to me. Because if they’d only asked, I could have told them that we’re both vegan and in my wife’s case, that’s because she’s allergic to dairy products – so not only do we not want to eat it, if we do, one of us will actually experience physical harm.

Allergens

I guess that’s a reasonable metaphor for the show, actually.

Welsh TV

The cast of EastEnders try to pronounce Welsh placenames

My wife is Welsh and I even have a few relatives who have Welsh as a first language, so naturally I’ve tried to learn Welsh. But that’s actually quite hard in London, where there are no classes, and learning it from a book simply doesn’t work.

So even though I know the rules and have been to Wales a reasonable amount, correctly pronouncing Welsh placenames (and most Welsh words) is still a little beyond me and mostly evokes laughter from my wife. Ah, the merriment we had yesterday (St David’s Day) as I tried to sing a Welsh hymn:

I bob un sydd ffyddlon
Dan Ei faner Ef,
Mae gan Iesu goron
Fry yn nheyrnas nef:
Lluoedd Duw a Satan
Sydd yn cwrdd yn awr:
Mae gan blant eu cyfran
Yn y rhyfel mawr.

Cytgan:
I bob un sydd ffyddlon
Dan Ei faner Ef
Mae gan Iesu goron
Fry yn nheyrnas nef.

Awn i gwrdd y gelyn
Bawb ag arfau glân;
Uffern sydd i’n herbyn
A’i phicellau tân.
Gwasgwn yn y rhengau,
Ac edrychwn fry;
Concrwr byd ac angau
Acw sydd o’n tu!

So have a care for the poor old cast of EastEnders as they try to pronounce a few Welsh placenames, in honour of St David’s Day. Kudos to Dad’s Army‘s Ian Lavender, mind, whom I didn’t even know was on the show and is actually quite good, even doing a relatively good rendition of the almost always fatal Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.

Weekly Wonder Woman

Weekly Wonder Woman: Trinity #6, Love Is Love, Justice League #15, Wonder Woman #17, Batman ’66 Meets Wonder Woman ’77

Lots of things, albeit quite small ones, have happened since the last WWW, but it’s a full quality service I offer here, so I’ll do my best to let you know all of them.

We’ve had the cover of the new Wonder Woman novel released:

Empire magazine has come out and done a feature on the movie, complete with new pictures and not one but two covers:

There’s been a screening of the movie for fans (spoilers ahoy) and a toy fair has given us our first look at the movie’s Big Bad, Ares (who may – or may not – be played by David Thewlis):

There’s also been a new TV spot released for the movie (it doesn’t add much, though):

Meanwhile, June 3rd has been declared Wonder Woman Day by DC:

Wonder Woman Day

That’s the day after the movie is released, mind, so I don’t know what’s going on there.

And if you fancy helping America’s ACLU, Felix Comic Art is selling off a new piece by Cliff Chiang:

Cliff Chiang - Justice

After the jump, we’ll look (in quite sketchy detail, given my backlog) at the DC Comics that have featured Diana, the Amazon Princess™, over the past two weeks: Trinity #6, Love Is Love, Justice League #15, Wonder Woman #17 and Batman ’66 Meets Wonder Woman ’77. Two of those feature the (former?) father of Diana, Zeus, but you’ll have to guess which ones for now.

I should also mention that the new DC Animated Universe movie, Justice League: Dark is now available to buy. As with rather a lot of the previous DCAU movies, it’s intended less as a chance to continue the stories of the Justice League set up in Justice League: War, more as a chance to launch new spin-off series featuring different characters. So while our Diana does make an appearance, it’s mainly so she can be tied up with her own lasso, while Batman, John Constantine, Zatanna, Swamp Thing, Deadman, Jason Blood and co go off and do the real work.

If you like Zatanna and Constantine or simply miss The Guyver, it’s a must; if you’re in it for Diana, you can probably skip it.
