Preview: Raines

Jeff Goldblum in Raines

In the US: NBC, midseason.

In the UK: Acquired by ITV3, with a later pick-up by ITV1

When I first heard about Raines, I wasn’t impressed. A detective that can talk to dead people? Just how derivative can you get? Like we need another Medium or Ghost Whisperer.

Turns out that while Raines (Jeff Goldblum) can talk to dead people, it’s not because he’s psychic. It’s cos he’s just a little bit nuts and has a very vivid imagination.

Preview: The Black Donnellys

The Black Donnellys

In the US: NBC, mid-season show

In the UK: Acquired for ITV2. Will debut in the spring.

In the US: Sundays, ABC Family, 8pm

In the UK: Not yet acquired

Would you give up your life and go on a round the world trek? Would you throw your inhibitions to the wind? Track down that lost love and make a go of it? Or would you just get on with your life and hope for the best?

Three Moons Over Milford tries to answer this question by dwelling on the inhabitants of Milford, a small town in Vermont.

Review: Charlie Brooker’s Screen Wipe

Screen Wipe Series 2

In the UK: BBC Four, Thursdays, 10.30pm (repeated later and on Fridays)

Ah, Charlie Brooker. Anyone with any sense and love of TV reads his Guardian ‘Screen Burn’ column every Saturday. It’s usually the funniest thing you’ll read that week.

However, his Screen Wipe review show, which pretty much translates ‘Screen Burn’ into pictures, hasn’t been so compelling. The first season, now entertainingly described as “three pilot episodes”, was all over the place, as I pointed out in my Off The Telly review at the time.

Watching this season, I have the oddest feeling he’s read it because he’s fixed most of the problems.
