Old Not Quite Gems: The Highwayman (1987)

The Highwayman

Glen A Larson was, as I may have mentioned once, twice or possibly even three times before, one of the most powerful US TV producers of the late 70s and 80s. The creator of Battlestar Galactica, Magnum PI, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century and Knight Rider, among other shows, he shaped the face of US television for pretty much a decade. Some of his shows did well, others not so much, but he was still one of the most influential people in television.

However, things started to peter out for him by the end of the decade, and one of his last shows – before he eventually hit rock bottom with Night Man – was The Highwayman, a poorly remembered (and slightly poor) show that aired largely in the wee small hours of the night over here in the UK. It was set in the near future where, as the narrator at the beginning of each episode said, “There is a world just beyond now where reality rides a razor-thin seam between fact and possibility, where the laws of the present collide with the crimes of tomorrow. Patrolling these vast outlands is a new breed of lawman, guarding the fringes of society’s frontiers they are known simply as Highwayman and this is their story.”

Part Mad Max, part Max Headroom, the basic idea was that in the “near future” (1992) a group of law enforcement officers who dress like bikers roam the desert roads of America, trying to prevent crimes. Most of these crimes will apparently be quite futuristic, involving aliens, robots, cloning, time travel and mind-reading among other things. To prevent these crimes, they have futuristic weapons and, in keeping with Larson’s other super-technology shows, trucks that can turn invisible and the cabins of which can separate off as helicopters or cars.

Who exactly these law enforcement officers worked for is unclear, but in the pilot episode they worked for Claudia Christian (Babylon 5), in subsequent episodes Jane Badler (V and Mission: Impossible). The hero of the piece was Sam J Jones (Flash in the movie Flash Gordon), who’s only called The Highwayman or “Highway” throughout. After the pilot episode, he’s joined by another Highwayman, Jetto, played by Australian ‘actor’ and Aussie rules football star Mark “Jacko” Jackson (which gave us the timeless on-screen credit “co-starring Jacko as Jetto”) and Tim Russ (Star Trek: Voyager, Samantha Who?) as an engineer with a very bad moustache who helps fix his truck when it has problems.

Jones fit the part exactly as “Highway”, but largely and despite guest appearances from the likes of Jimmy Smits, G Gordon Liddy and Rowdy Roddy Piper, this was a very poor show. The scripts were fun but dumb, it had a slightly catchy theme, but the action was a little lacking – although briefer in duration than Manimal‘s transformation scenes, the inevitable copter-separation only slowed things down – and it was too low budget to do much well. Jacko was also an incredibly bad actor. Just terrifyingly bad. Which made every scene he was in like fingernails down a blackboard.

Third-episode verdict: Mad Love

In the US: Mondays, 8.30/7.30c, CBS

Well, you have to admire a show for consistency, even if it’s merely consistently bland. Mad Love – in part a mimic of another of CBS’s sitcoms, How I Met Your Mother but in essence the US answer to Gavin & Stacey, with a central blandish couple who fall in love at first sight being eclipsed by their more interesting love/hate each other at first sight friends – has been nothing but bland, despite the best efforts of a good cast.

Much like the first episode, each week, we go through a situation in which the two main characters get to know each and they turn out to be as bland as we thought; meanwhile, the two wacky friends get to be wacky at each other, all without raising much by the way of laughs. At no point do you really care about the bland couple; you kind of want the wacky pair to get together, but since that’s so completely inevitable and you’ll have to sit through standard but inept US sitcom putdowns to get there, you don’t want it that much.

There have at least been attempts to give all the characters some background and we even know what Sarah Chalke’s character does for a living now – ooh! But with scripts that rarely offer anything fresh or original in terms of comedy, that’s the best that can be said.

One to skip, despite the cast who deserve much, much better.

Third-episode verdict: Mr Sunshine

In the US: Wednesdays, 9.30/8.30c, ABC

Oh, how the mighty have fallen. What a shame. Mr Sunshine started so well, with a great cast and a cracking script. I got all light-headed with optimism.

Then episode two arrived and my God did it stink. Not a laugh the whole episode, which actually had me begging for the end to happen. And while episode three was mildly funnier, it’s exposed the big problem with Mr Sunshine: the cast might be good, but they can’t make a silk purse out of sow’s ear, the scripts being the sow’s ear in this case.

Strangely, episode two was written by the same writers as episode one with one exception – Matt Perry didn’t contribute to episode two (officially at least). Which suggests that the only time Mr Sunshine is going to be funny is when Matt Perry is writing the episodes.

Oh well. Let’s chalk that one up to experience.

Third-episode verdict: Traffic Light

In the US: Tuesdays, 9.30c/8.30c, Fox

I guess, in the scheme of things, a rom-com aimed at men is novel. Three male friends hang out, talk about their relationships (or lack thereof) and try to get the upper hand with their wives and girlfriends – sometimes actually winning – without being complete dicks and occasionally being smart.

Novel.

Yet, the problem with Traffic Light is it’s not very funny. It’s surprisingly smart, but it’s very rare that its jokes hit home. The men aren’t that relatable. The women are a little bit too much the voice of responsibility and lack of fun, and things are rarely from their point of view. 

So unfortunately, despite a brave attempt and a second episode that did at least raise a couple of titters, Traffic Light‘s going down in the books as a bit of a failure.

Third-episode verdict: The Chicago Code

The problem The Chicago Code faces is that it’s a very good show, trapped inside a network TV format. At its heart, there are nuggets of brilliance, involving police and city corruption, the politics of policing, life in Chicago, inter-cop politics and what it means to be a police officer. It has a really good cast and when Shawn Ryan isn’t writing it (cf the first episode), the dialogue is good and it all feels very real.

Where it falls apart is when it bows to mainstream pressures and tries to give us the standard cop show of the week treatment. Here we have absurdities piled on the ridiculous, ridiculous gun fights and car chases, and implausibilities that detract in quite substantial ways from the much subtler, cleverer intrigues of the ongoing corruption investigation. 

Hopefully, over time, these will go away as the writers assume they’ve got a hooked audience and can downplay the theatrics because if they can, The Chicago Code will be quite a show. At the moment, though, a decent show is being undermined and although it scores well on The Carusometer, I’m not convinced I’ll stay with it in the long-term.
