The changing face of kids’ TV
Hot on today’s/yesterday’s news that Grange Hill is going to be revamped (free registration required) to focus on younger kids and return to the original comic strip titles and theme tune, I thought I’d focus a little on the misery of old age.
As you may – or may not – know, I’ve got one of those door stops aka Apple TVs that sits connected to my now somewhat senile television and serves up, among other things, all manner of goodies from Bastard, my Mac-based PVR.
I say “among other things” because it also has an Internet connection that allows it to stream YouTube videos directly to the TV as well.
Initially, I thought this was about as useful as a Marxist analysis of Katie and Peter Unleashed. But it’s actually turning out to be quite fun, now that YouTube is slowly digitising all its old vids into an Apple TV-compatible format – assuming you can get over having to use one of those old arcade game-style on-screen keyboards to type out “prestidigitation” or whatever you happen to be looking for. Much better than crouching over a computer typing stuff into a web browser anyway. And some of the vids are almost crystal clear.
Being of a certain age, once I’d got over the excitement of the “Will it Blend?” guy, immediately started looking for clips from old kids’ TV shows.
Tell you what – not only have times change, everything was a lot more sinister then.
Apologies for the lack of decent blogging recently
Sorry, faithful readers, for the lack of decent-quality, non-news blogging recently. I have, to put it bluntly, been “working like a bastard” and have also been completely revamping another web site elsewhere, among other things, which has sucked up most of my free time – not just for blogging, but for watching stuff as well.
Fingers crossed, this week’s two and a half hours of commuting a day will give me the time to listen to the last three Big Finish Doctor Who plays and review them for you, at least. Not sure about Learners though: the first ten minutes didn’t seem that great.
Hopefully, I’ll be able to up the frequency – and quality – again in a fortnight.
Thanks for your patience!
New home
As mentioned on Friday, I’ve finally had enough of my old web host, Dataflame, and have decided to move over to LivingDot, which seems to be a whole lot better. There are still a few teething troubles, some of which seem to involve time travel brought about by the switch back to GMT in the UK over the weekend, and I’m working on them at the moment. Fingers crossed, I’ll have them fixed soon.
Thanks for bearing with me.
I’m back – plus sorry about the breakages
I’ve returned from occasionally sunny Wales. Hoorah. If you’re lucky, I’ll tell you about my brief encounter with Donny Osmond and his dancers as well as ‘David Tenant’.
However, apologies for the broken web site. Naturally, my web host waited until I was away before springing that one on me. I’ve fixed it now, but am feeling slightly ill tempered about the whole thing. Humph. The news service should resume tomorrow.
