What have you been watching this week (w/e October 23)

A bit of an odd collection of viewing treats this week:

  • Mad Men – A very nice episode again. Can’t say much without revealing spoilers, but the “I’ve forgotten it” moment was very familiar, and I’m liking what’s going on with Don
  • House – Nothing too extraordinary this week, but good to see the producers sticking by their guns with the format changes
  • Modern Family – a good few titters this week, mostly involving Cameron
  • Community – still the funniest thing on TV by miles now. Lovely wife’s started watching and she’s loving it too
  • Dexter – you could see where it was all going right from the beginning, but still shocking nonetheless
  • Cougar Town – okay. Not great
  • Question Time – ha, ha, ha. What an exciting collection of stupid people and people who can’t construct arguments on both sides. And when did Jack Straw become such a waffler? I haven’t watched in a while, but when did they get rid of audience votes? And when did the audiences get so small (or was that purely for this edition?)
  • Stargate Universe – still liking it. Robert Carlyle’s really good, and they had the whole thing on the ship more or less, so no gating at this point, thank God.
  • Masterchef: The Professionals – I was only watching this out of one eye, since it’s more lovely wife’s choice of viewing. But correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t Greg Wallace merely say “Great flavours” to every dish or copy whatever the professional chef judge says? The man might as well be replaced by a giant set of ditto marks.

I really can’t be arsed to watch The Sarah Jane Adventures until David Tennant is on, so I’ve built up a backlog there. It may be Doctor Who, but it’s still a kids’ show. Being Erica we’re lagging on again; ditto, Curb Your Enthusiasm. I’ve given up on The Middle and Trauma.

Don’t forget everyone: Joanna Page is on the Jonathan Ross show tonight.

What have you been watching though?

Question of the week: Are British actors too ugly?

A slight switch for the blog, with Meme of the Week metamorphosing into the more versatile Question of the Week from now on. And to kick it off, we ask the simple question, prompted by today’s news:

Are the actors in British TV shows too ugly?

Have all the pretty ones gone to America, leaving the ugly ones behind? Are the stereotypes about British dentistry, pasty skin and undernourishment true? And will people in other countries only watch shows starring pretty people? What say you?

What have you been watching this week (w/e October 16)

Still plenty to watch on TV, despite my dropping a large number of shows. Other than what I reviewed already this week, here’s what’s been on our pile of TV viewing:

  • Being Erica – We’re an episode behind but starting to feel a bit “Hmm” about it right now. The show feels like it’s lose the narrative drive of the first season. Why does Erica need therapy still?
  • Mad Men – I’m up to speed again. Season three’s definitely picking up after a slow first third and it’s great again.
  • Supernatural – Funny again. Yey. Good to see Paris Hilton reveal her true evil colours.
  • House – not sure about the story arc, but it’s good to see a return to earlier seasons (you know what I mean if you’re watching)

I have minimal recollection of Cougar Town, CSI, Dexter, Community and Modern Family, other than they were as good as usual, so keep watching if you aren’t already.

What have you been watching though? Tell us all here, but here’s important: if you’ve reviewed something on your blog, you can put a link to it here rather than repeat yourself (although too many links and you might get killed by the spam filter).

Meme of the week: your favourite book sequel

In honour of the release of the latest book in the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy range, this week’s meme asks:

What’s your favourite book sequel?

It can be part of a range, it can be by someone other than the original author, it can be authorised or unauthorised. It’s up to you. Anyone saying Eric van Lustbader’s Bourne books will be shot, however.

If you can’t do books, you can always do sequel TV shows (eg Ashes to Ashes). Or you can say which book sequel you really hated.
