Every month, TMINE lets you know what TV the BFI will be presenting at the South Bank in London

If you like European plays, you’ll love March at the BFI, as there’s going to be a season of TV adaptations of European plays from down through the ages. Centrepiece of the season is a Q&A with Walter Iuzzolino of Walter Presents… fame, discussing with others including Cherie Lunghi, the British attitude to European TV.

If you dislike European plays, there’s some animated Doctor Who with assistant Anneke Wills and a preview of ITV’s Cheat that includes a Q&A with cast and crew. Full details after the jump…

Every week or so, TMINE flags up what new TV events BAFTA is holding around the UK

Moved to its somewhat odd new regular slot of Tuesdays, here’s the latest update on what BAFTA is doing TV-wise around the UK. At the moment, BAFTA seems to be focused on its Welsh activities, mind. Just announced is an additional date and location for Matthew Hall to talk about writing (more details on the first announcement) – he’s now going to be at JP studio, Bangor University, on Wednesday, 20 February at 1.30pm. You can book tickets if you’re a member by emailing Vicki.

But there’s one new event, which is for an S4C drama that if I not overlooked (as The Killing Times is reviewing it), couldn’t quite find the time to watch.

Preview: Final episode of 35 Awr + Q&A (Carmarthen)

Boom Cymru and S4C present the final installment of the eight-part series that is set in a jury room, featuring 10 people deliberating over a murder case.

Written by BAFTA Cymru nominee Fflur Dafydd (The Library Suicides) and starring Lisa Marged (Parch, Wolfblood) and Jâms Thomas (Gwaith Cartref).

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with cast and key creatives.

The Weekly Play: Armchair Theatre – A Bit of A Lift (1973)

Readers of the somewhat irregular and increasingly badly named TMINE feature The Weekly Play will recall classic ITV play strand Armchair Theatre, which as I mentioned here, resulted in numerous classics of the small screen.

While at least some of those plays have been releases on DVD, it’s never (AFAIK) been repeated on TV, beyond the occasional special, but this month changes that. Talking Pictures TV, one of the ‘nosebleed’ channels on your EPG (Virgin 445; Freeview 81; Sky channel 328; Freesat 306; Youview 81), is one of the rare channels out there on UK TV worth watching these days, particularly if you’re a classic film or TV buff. Airing all manner of rarities of both the silver and the small screen – it had Hannay last month and I can see it’s got the Roger Moore The Saint next month, too – it’s worth checking out if you can, although it really could do with a Roku/iOS/Android app, if you ask me.

And starting this Sunday, every week, it’s going to air a play from Armchair Theatre.

The season starts on Sunday with 1973’s A Bit of A Lift, directed by Dennis Vance and starring Ronald Fraser, Ann Beach, Donald Churchill and Denise Shaw.

A man meets a woman at a wedding and manages to sweet talk her, only to end up inadvertently helping out another male.

But it’s also this week’s Weekly Play. What serendipity, hey?

Not one of the regular events that TMINE covers, I know, but We Are Cult has announced not one but two one-day conventions to be held this year in Bristol and Manchester. I thought some of you might be interested…

The first WE ARE CULT one-day convention

Since its launch in September 2016, We Are Cult has brought you the best in news, reviews, interviews and features relating to anything leftfield, wayward and independently minded in pop culture, with an accent on all things retro. Our following and social media response has proven that there is an audience for all things Cult, from mainstream to slipstream, and that niche is nice.

In 2019, We Are Cult is taking it to the next level, with its first convention, a one-day event in Bristol this June, where we will present a series of informal, intimate panels with writers, actors and creators from the worlds of cult film and television, including a few surprises along the way.

Guests are scheduled to include:

  • Comedy writer Andrew Marshall (End Of Part One, 2 point 4 Children, Strange) in conversation with comedy historian Jem Roberts, biographer of Douglas Adams, Fry & Laurie and the ‘Blackadder’ saga
  • A special screening with Doctor Who DVD and Blu-Ray documentary maker and Big Finish writer Chris Chapman
  • We Sound Familiar, a comedy podcast from impressionists Peter Walsh, Elliott Crossley and Chris Walker-Thomson
  • An interview with Stephen Volk, writer of Ghostwatch
  • Artist Sophie Iles, whose work has appeared in DWM, BBC’s Anglophena’s DoctorWho TV, The Time Travel Nexus, Cosmic Masque & multiple charity works.

Your Master of Ceremonies will be Sam Michael, stand-up comedian and Kennet Radio DJ.

The second WE ARE CULT one-day convention

Never let it be thought that even though BAFTA is releasing details of its events at the rate of 1/week* that it’s doing that in a logical progression. Oh no, siree. Because this week’s new event is scheduled for the start of February. Go work that out.

TV Preview: Curfew + Q&A

New Sky original production Curfew is an exhilarating eight-part street race drama series. It follows the story of ordinary people and extraordinary characters competing in the world’s fastest, most furious illegal night-time street race.

Desperate for their own reasons, the challengers risk everything as they race through the night from London to northernmost Scotland in their pimped-out, weaponised vehicles to win the ultimate prize — freedom from the totalitarian government curfew that controls their lives.

The series stars Sean Bean, Phoebe Fox, Malachi Kirby, Adrian Lester, Miranda Richardson, Harriet Walter, Rose Williams and Billy Zane.

This screening will be followed by a Q&A with Colm McCarthy (director), Frith Tiplady (executive producer – Moonage Pictures), and Simon Maloney (producer).
