It’s a bit of a slow start to BAFTA’s November events, with just one revealed so far. But we actually have a month’s notice for it, unlike the RTS preview of the exact same show last month…

TV Preview: Traces + Q&A

Thursday, 28 November 2019 – 6.30pm
Odeon Luxe, Glasgow Quay, Glasgow

While attending an online forensic course, a young lab assistant discovers that the fictitious case study has a link to her past. With a help of two female professors she works on bringing a killer to justice.

When Emma Hedges (Molly Windsor) returns to Dundee to start her new job as a lab technician, she’s encouraged to take part in an online course teaching the principles of forensic science. Given a fictitious murder case, her task is to identify the victim and establish how they died.

But having completed the first module, Emma knows exactly who the victim is: her mum! Marie Monroe (Carly Anderson) was murdered when Emma was seven, her body discovered on Law Hill and no-one has ever been convicted. But why are Sarah Gordon (Laura Fraser), professor of chemistry, and Kathy Torrence (Jennifer Spence), professor of forensic anthropology, using her mother’s case for their course?

Determined to discover what happened to Marie but unable to get answers from her family, Emma turns to Sarah who offers up trusted friend DI McKinven (Michael Nardone) as the natural place for Emma to take her revelations.

As Emma re-connects with her dad Drew (John Gordon Sinclair), her childhood friend Skye (Jamie Marie Leary) and her mum Izzy (Laurie Brett), while falling for the gentle and irresistible Daniel (Martin Compston), her sleuthing takes her into dark corners, unpicking more and more secrets, and it becomes clear that she should trust no-one. It will be Sarah and Kathy’s exacting minds that reward Emma’s faith in the science that has fuelled her imagination, and who will ultimately bring her mother’s killer to justice.

This screening will be followed by a Q&A with writers Val McDermid and Amelia Bullmore, executive producers Nicola Shindler and Juliet Charlesworth and actor Laura Fraser

It’s another sneaky week for BAFTA, with another October event stealthily added to its line-up to minimal fanfare. But they ain’t getting it past me.

Preview Screening: Ant & Dec’s DNA Journey

Thursday, 17 October 2019 – 7:00pm
The May Fair Hotel, Stratton St, Mayfair, London W1J 8LT

A preview of the first episode of the new two-part ITV series followed by a Q&A with Ant & Dec.

Ant & Dec’s DNA Journey will see two of the UK’s best-loved stars and BAFTA Award winning practitioners navigate a tougher terrain than the Australian jungle. Guided by expert genealogists and historians, the pair will follow their maternal and paternal bloodlines, using their DNA to search their ancestral history.   

As their travels take them to Ireland and the US, the pair will not only delve into their past but will also meet relatives they had no clue even existed, unveiling some truly shocking revelations that only their DNA could unlock. Viewers will be treated to a rare and personal glimpse into this truly remarkable friendship with their warmth and infectious humour that has captured the nation over the years.

Ant & Dec’s DNA Journey is a Voltage TV and Mitre Television co-production for ITV.  It was commissioned by Siobhan Greene when she was ITV’s Head of Entertainment Commissioning and Louise Major Assistant Commissioner, Entertainment, ITV.  The Executive Producers are Kathleen Larkin and Sanjay Singhal and the Director is Iain Thompson, Voltage TV.

Every Tuesday, TMINE flags up what new TV events BAFTA is holding around the UK

October’s here already and typically, BAFTA has scheduled two stonking events without telling anyone – so I’ll do it instead. They’re both in Wales, mind, but if you fancy an exclusive preview of two big shows, that’s the place to be.

Preview Screening: His Dark Materials + Q&A

Thursday, 17 October 2019 – 7:00pm
Odeon, Cardiff

BAFTA Cymru, BBC Wales, Bad Wolf and Wales Screen invite you to take your first steps into Lyra’s world at the world premiere of His Dark Materials.

This BBC TV adaptation is based on Philip Pullman’s global best-selling fantasy trilogy, which has been published in over 40 languages and sold 18 million copies worldwide.
 
Starring James McAvoy, Ruth Wilson, Dafne Keen and Lin-Manuel Miranda, this complex and richly imaginative eight-part series is produced by Bad Wolf and New Line Cinema for BBC One and HBO; written by Jack Thorne and directed by Tom Hooper, Dawn Shadforth, Otto Bathurst, Euros Lyn and Jamie Childs.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with cast members Ruth Wilson (Luther, The Affair, Saving Mr Banks), Dafne Keen (Logan), Jane Tranter (Executive Producer) and Joel Collins (Production Designer).

Preview Screening: War of the Worlds + Q&A

Wednesday, 23 October 2019 – 7:00pm
Chapter, Cardiff

A chance to see a new adaptation of popular sci-fi series War of the Worlds, starring Gabriel Byrne (The Usual Suspects), before it is broadcast on Fox.

When astronomers detect a transmission from another galaxy, it is definitive proof of intelligent extra-terrestrial life. The world’s population waits for further contact with bated breath. They do not have to wait long. Within days, mankind is all but wiped out by a devastating attack; pockets of humanity are left in an eerily deserted world.

As aliens hunt and kill those left alive, the survivors ask a burning question – who are these attackers and why are they hell-bent on our destruction? Emotional, cinematic and rooted in character, it is a unique marriage of human drama and the best science fiction.

This is a story of ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances – but they are more than just victims in a brutal war. For, as we will come to realise, the aliens’ savage attack on earth is not arbitrary: its seeds are being sown before our very eyes.

Set in present-day Europe, War of the Worlds is a multi-faceted series, written and created by the BAFTA award winner Howard Overman (Misfits, Crazyhead, Merlin) based on the timeless story by HG Wells.  It is being Executive Produced by Johnny Capps, Julian Murphy, and Howard Overman through their company, Urban Myth Films.

War of the Worlds was filmed on location in Cardiff.

The event will begin with networking drinks supported by Wales Screen.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with key creatives (details to follow).

BAFTA like to sneak an exciting event in when people are looking. And this here series finale screening of Peaky Blinders is no exception. I mean, who could want to go and see this, hey?

Screening: Peaky Blinders Season Finale + Q&A

Sunday, 22 September 2019 – 7:30pm
Chapter, Cardiff

Join us for the finale of season five of Steven Knight’s BAFTA award-winning saga, Peaky Blinders, shortly before its transmission on BBC One, the same evening.

1929. The whole world has been thrown into turmoil by the Wall Street Crash. Opportunity and misfortune are everywhere.

Tommy Shelby MP (Cillian Murphy) is approached by a charismatic politician (Sam Claflin, The Hunger Games) with a bold vision for Britain. He soon realises that his response will affect not just his own family’s future but that of the entire nation.

Featuring a spectacular cast that includes Helen McCrory (Skyfall), Paul Anderson (The Revenant), Sophie Rundle (Gentleman Jack), Anya Taylor-Joy (Glass), Brian Gleeson (Logan Lucky) and Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones).

In the hotly anticipated final episode, family tensions surface after an unexpected announcement. And Tommy puts his plan for Oswald Mosley into action, but has he underestimated his opponent?

This special advance showing will be followed by a discussion and audience Q&A with key creatives including Anthony Byrne (Director – His Dark Materials, Ripper Street), Chris Ballantyne (Producer – Broadchurch, Silent Witness), Nicole Northridge (Production Designer – Humans, Jamestown) and Special Effects specialists, Danny Hargreaves (Sherlock, Star Wars, FreeFire, Tolkien) and Arran Glasser (Luther, Doctor Who) from Cardiff-based Real SFX.

Every Tuesday, TMINE flags up what new TV events BAFTA is holding around the UK

August has been pretty quiet for BAFTA events – although it’s not like I’ve been paying close attention over the holidays – but September is shaping up pretty nicely, particularly for Welsh TV. Here’s what we’ve got so far, as usually we can expect more events as we head into September itself:

  • A preview of S4C’s Pili Pala
  • A preview of series 2 of BBC One’s Motherland
  • A celebration of Un Bore Mercher (Keeping Faith)
  • An audience with Rhys Ifans
