Every Tuesday, TMINE flags up what new TV events BAFTA is holding around the UK

BAFTA events are coming thick and fast for March now, with not just one but two to add to the previously announced preview of Adult Material. For a bit of variety, one’s in London and the other’s in Glasgow.

Preview: Normal People

Monday, 16 March 2020 – 7:00pm

The May Fair Hotel, Stratton St, Mayfair, London W1J 8LT

A preview of the new BBC drama followed by a Q&A with key cast and crew.

Adapted by Sally Rooney alongside writers Alice Birch and Mark O’Rowe, from Rooney’s novel of the same name, Normal People tracks the tender but complicated relationship of Marianne (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and Connell (Paul Mescal), from the end of their school days in small-town west of Ireland to their undergraduate years at Trinity College.

At school, Connell is well liked and popular, while Marianne is lonely, proud and intimidating. When Connell comes to pick up his mother from her cleaning job at Marianne’s house, a strange and indelible connection grows between the two teenagers – one they are determined to conceal. A year later, they’re both studying in Dublin and Marianne has found her feet in a new social world, leaving Connell hanging at the side lines, shy and uncertain.

TV Preview: The Nest + Q&A

Thursday, 19 March 2020 – 6:30pm 

Everyman Cinema, Glasgow

Join us for an exclusive preview of the first episode of forthcoming BBC drama The Nest.

A wealthy couple and a teenage girl make a pact that will change all of their lives forever, in a new five-part drama from BAFTA award winning writer Nicole Taylor.

This screening will be followed by a Q&A with cast and crew.  

Networking drinks will take place in the Everyman bar afterwards.

We’re heading into March now with BAFTA events, of which we now have the first.

Preview: Adult Material

Tuesday, 10 March 2020 – 7:00pm

The May Fair Hotel, Stratton St, Mayfair, London W1J 8LT

A preview of Channel 4’s four-part drama followed by a Q&A with writer Lucy Kirkwood and actor Hayley Squires.

Written by Lucy Kirkwood (Chimerica) and directed by Dawn Shadforth (Trust). The series follows Jolene Dollar (Hayley Squires), a regular mother of three, who is the proud breadwinner of the family. However, Jolene does not have the most conventional of careers: she is one of the top porn performers in the UK.

Adult Material ventures into Jolene’s world – to a place that influences all of our lives, whether we know it or not. Interrogating what’s real, what’s fake, what’s up for sale and the impact that these things have on the individuals involved.

The cast includes Siena Kelly (Vanity Fair), Kerry Godliman (After Life), Joe Dempsie (Game of Thrones), Julian Ovenden (Downton Abbey), Phil Daniels (A Very Very Very Dark Matter) and Rupert Everett (The Happy Prince).

A quick last-minute addition to the schedule from BAFTA that’s a tad exclusive – you have to be a member and it’s in Port Talbot for a change (that’s where Bang is set/filmed).

Preview: Bang Series 2

Thursday, 13 February 2020 – 7:00pm

Aberavon Reel Cinema, Hollywood Park, Port Talbot SA12 6QW

This event is for members and invited guests only. The producers of the BAFTA Cymru and Celtic Media Festival award-winning S4C drama series Bang are delighted to invite you to the premiere of the second series.

The pioneering bilingual series returns to S4C this month with David Hayman and Alexander Vlahos joining cast regulars Jacob Ifan, Catrin Stewart, Jack Parry-Jones, Nia Roberts and Suzanne Packer.

The crime drama sees Sam return from prison while his sister Gina investigates a series of murders related to a historic rape case.

Bang is written by Roger Williams, directed by Philip John and produced by Catrin Lewis Defis for Joio.

It is an S4C Original supported by Welsh Government and distributed by Banijay Rights.

Please note, this preview will have English subtitles and the episode includes strong language with scenes some viewers might find distressing.

The screening will be followed by a drinks reception – this event is for members and invited guests only.

Unlike the RTS, BAFTA is moving forwards into February. First up is a preview and Q&A.

TV Preview: Last Tango in Halifax

Monday, 3 February 2020 – 7:00pm The May Fair Hotel, Stratton St, Mayfair, London W1J 8LT

A preview of the next instalment of the BAFTA-winning BBC One Drama followed by a Q&A with writer Sally Wainwright, actor Anne Reid, actor Nicola Walker and further cast TBA

Alan (Derek Jacobi) and Celia (Anne Reid) are now seven years into their marriage but, having moved into a desirable bungalow with stunning views across the Calder Valley, they aren’t quite seeing eye to eye. It isn’t just their differing politics that’s a source of tension; Alan’s new supermarket job brings an unexpected challenge in the form of a wild local lad, and at Far Slack Farm, Gillian (Nicola Walker) faces trouble with a giraffe.

Meanwhile John (Tony Gardner) is back on the scene, and Caroline (Sarah Lancashire) finds herself entangled in an emotional debacle with someone at work. Into all of this jets Alan’s brother Ted (Timothy West) on holiday from New Zealand. But it turns out he’s only bought a one-way ticket… and he hasn’t come alone.

Last Tango In Halifax (4×60’) is a Lookout Point (Gentleman Jack, Les Misérables, War And Peace) production for the BBC. The series is written by Sally Wainwright (Gentleman Jack, Happy Valley), directed by Gareth Bryn (Hidden, Hinterland) and produced by Ken Horn (Line of Duty, The Moorside). Executive producers are Faith Penhale and Laura Lankester for Lookout Point, Ben Irving for the BBC, and Sally Wainwright.

Public tickets will be on sale from Friday 24 January, 12.30.

Another BAFTA event for January to add to the White House Farm and Sex Education 2 screenings. This time, though, it’s a lecture.

Television Lecture: Chris Packham CBE

In January, the BAFTA Television Lecture will be delivered by award-winning broadcaster, wildlife and natural world conservationist, photographer and writer Chris Packham CBE.

Award-winning wildlife and natural world broadcaster, conservationist, photographer and writer Chris Packham CBE will deliver the prestigious BAFTA Television Lecture where he will share his personal view on creative excellence in television and his vision for the future.

Chris Packham’s career as a wildlife expert and natural world broadcaster has spanned more than 30 year. As a broadcaster, Packham has presented many popular natural history programmes, beginning his onscreen career in 1986 when he was a presenter on the multi BAFTA-winning series The Really Wild Show. 

More recently, Packham fronted popular BBC factual series Springwatch (2009-2018), which was awarded the BAFTA Special Award in 2011. He also embarked on a groundbreaking expedition to the Arctic for BBC Two’s Operation Iceberg (2012), which won the BAFTA for Factual Series at the 2013 British Academy Television Awards.  

Packham’s other TV credits include Autumnwatch (2008-2019), The Burrowers (2013), Inside the Animal Mind (2014), The Wonder of Animals (2014), Weird Wonders of the World (2015-16) and Blue Planet Live (2019).

Chris Packham was also awarded the Wildscreen Panda Award for Outstanding Achievement in 2016 in recognition of his significant contribution to wildlife filmmaking, conservation and the public’s  understanding of the environment.

More recently, Packham explained what it was like to live with Aspergers in the BBC documentary Chris Packham: Aspergers and Me, which won two BAFTAs in 2018 and which was also nominated for Single Documentary at BAFTA’s Television Awards in the same year.

Packham was appointed a CBE in the 2019 New Year Honours for services to nature conservation.

We will be running a guest list, which will open 30 minutes ahead of the event. We will not be checking people in ahead of this time and there will be no waiting area available by the auditorium. Early arrivals can enjoy the Barbican’s public spaces.
