What have you been watching this week (w/e December 24)?

Alex Breckenridge in Life Unexpected's Thanksgiving episode

Okay, let’s try this again given my last 20 minutes work just deleted itself thanks to buggy software…

It’s “What have you been watching this week?”, your chance to recommend to friends and fellow blog readers the TV that they might be missing or should avoid – and for me to do mini-reviews of everything I’ve watched this week.

It’s been two weeks since the last one, which was entirely deliberate and because of the Christmas schedules and not because I was working or anything. Oh yes. Over that time, there’s actually been not much at all, so I’ve caught up with just about everything. So after the jump Ancient Worlds, The Apprentice, Being Erica, Burn Notice, Community, Dexter, Dirk Gently, Hellcats, Life Unexpected, Misfits, Peep Show, Running Wilde, The Trip and a big chunk of BBC4’s ‘The Glory of Greece’ season – Delphi: The Bellybutton of the World and Gods and Monsters: Homer’s Odyssey.

Question of the week: are there shows you feel you’re missing out on?

In this day and age, it’s very easy to catch up on shows that you’ve missed – at least you’d think so, given iTunes, the iPlayer, Hulu, DVDs, re-runs, et al. Yet often as not, when faced with the prospect of six hours or 13 hours or even 24 hours to catch up with a season’s worth of TV episodes – let alone two or more seasons – that task becomes impossible.

Now, despite the best intentions of the Carusometer, sometimes shows get passed me. I hear Sons of Anarchy is very good, even though I never got further than the first episode. Jimmy McGovern’s Accused is getting lots of press coverage – even though I didn’t notice it was on – Terriers apparently got good several episodes in and Hawaii Five-0 seems to have a certain buzz, despite it being daft as hell. I’m beginning to regret not watching them and being out of the conversational loop.

So this week’s question is:

Are there any shows you haven’t been watching that you wish you had, but still can’t find the time to watch anyway? Why do you want to watch them – and why can’t you?

Question of the week: are online ‘zombie’ spin-offs a good idea?

Waterloo ROad

No, not literally zombies (although if you want…), so bear with me. This week, the BBC announced that Waterloo Road was going to get an online spin-off series. So far, so not very radical at all. But intriguingly, this series is going to feature popular characters who have already been written out of the series – the dead will walk again, hence ‘zombies’.

Now, Waterloo Road, since it’s set in a school, has a certain natural attrition rate, so it’s arguable that sometimes characters could possibly leave before their stories are over – after all, most people’s stories only start once they leave school.

But do you think this is a good idea for other shows? Doctor Who has already brought back former companion Sarah Jane Smith in her own TV series, so perhaps there’s room for other companions and characters to be revived this way. But does the likely reduced budget, run-time, writing staff et al mean such a project risks ruining these characters, cheapening them – and even potentially causing the main series to avoid giving characters more final endings so they can move to these spin-offs?

This week’s question of the week is therefore:

Are online ‘zombie’ spin-offs a good idea? And if they are, what series would you like to see having them?

What have you been watching this week (w/e November 19)?

Misfits - Season 2

Back again to its regular Friday slot, it’s “What have you been watching this week?”, your chance to recommend to friends and fellow blog readers the TV that they might be missing or should avoid – and for me to do mini-reviews of everything I’ve watched this week.

Thanks for helping out last week and stepping into the breach, everyone, as time stopped me from both watching TV and writing about it. But I’ve nearly caught up now. Sure, I’ve still got a backlog: BBC4’s marvellous ‘Glory of Greece’ season, The Trip, Boardwalk Empire and a few eps from this week such as Cougar Town, but I’m still ready to talk TV. So, after the jump, The Apprentice, Being Erica, Boardwalk Empire, Chuck, Community, Dexter, Hellcats, House, In Treatment, Life Unexpected, Misfits, Modern Family, No Ordinary Family, Smallville, Stargate Universe, The Walking Dead and 30 Rock.
