Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and what can Santa Rob bring you for 2011?

Merry Christmas! It’s that time again everyone. Time for my annual year-end break which some crazy people have decided to call “Christmas”.

As usual, I plan on doing precisely no work over the Christmas break, but I’ll be back with the news and more on January 3rd (well, maybe. The 4th definitely. Isn’t the 3rd a holiday?).

Survey time
As always, let’s take this as an opportunity to have a reader survey. What sorts of things would you like to see on this here blog in 2011? And what sort of things have outstayed their welcome? Not enough Scarlett Johansson? Too much Doctor Who? What do you reckon?

Leave your requests for more, less or the same below in the comments and I’ll decide what gets the chop and what stays alive when I get back.

In the meantime, a Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year to you all, thanks for reading and a great big thanks as always to everyone who’s left a comment for livening up the place!

What have you been watching this week (w/e December 24)?

Alex Breckenridge in Life Unexpected's Thanksgiving episode

Okay, let’s try this again given my last 20 minutes work just deleted itself thanks to buggy software…

It’s “What have you been watching this week?”, your chance to recommend to friends and fellow blog readers the TV that they might be missing or should avoid – and for me to do mini-reviews of everything I’ve watched this week.

It’s been two weeks since the last one, which was entirely deliberate and because of the Christmas schedules and not because I was working or anything. Oh yes. Over that time, there’s actually been not much at all, so I’ve caught up with just about everything. So after the jump Ancient Worlds, The Apprentice, Being Erica, Burn Notice, Community, Dexter, Dirk Gently, Hellcats, Life Unexpected, Misfits, Peep Show, Running Wilde, The Trip and a big chunk of BBC4’s ‘The Glory of Greece’ season – Delphi: The Bellybutton of the World and Gods and Monsters: Homer’s Odyssey.

Old Gems: The Box of Delights (1984)

The Box of Delights

Well, it’s Christmas so what would be more appropriate for the last Old/Lost Gem before we all start our marathon mince-pie fests than to look at the Old Gem that is The Box Of Delights, a spookier piece of Christmas cheer for kids you’d be hard-pushed to find.

Starring Patrick Troughton, Robert Stephens and the might of the then-new Quantel Paintbox, The Box of Delights was a six-part adaptation of John Masefield’s book of the same name that saw young Kay Harker returning from boarding school for the Christmas holidays. Along the way, he gets involved in a battle between magical peoples who want the ‘box of delights’, a wondrous creation that can not only help the possessor shrink, fly and travel in time, but also contains all manner of things inside.

And here’s the equally magical title sequence.
