Despite yet another Bank Holiday weekend, TMINE did as good as it promised and dished you all up not one but two boxsets

Meanwhile, Orange Wednesday‘s film reviews gave us a Chinese-language double-bill of The Wandering Earth (2019) and The Water Margin (1973).

What’s coming this week

Lovely Wife hasn’t felt motivated enough to watch Starz (US)’s The Spanish Princess and doesn’t seem likely to change her mind about that for a while, so we won’t be looking at that.

However, coming this week to our TV screens are the following shows, which I’ll rate in terms of the chance I’ll bother watching and reviewing them:

Also potentially up for review are some shows that I didn’t have time to watch this week and which in some cases were online-only:

  • Mr Black (Australia: Ten) – likely
  • The 410 (Canada: CBC Gem) – possible
  • Educators (New Zealand: TVNZ OnDemand) – possible

But they may all end up in one big WHYBW next week.

One show I did start watching is Netflix’s Dead to Me, but you can read about that after the jump.

What TV’s on at the RTS in May? Including Why We Love Food

So, new feature. I’ve spotted there’s this thing called the Royal Television Society (RTS) and that they do TV-related events that are open to the public, as well as to members. Brainwave – why don’t I tell y’all about them, like I do with the BFI, BAFTA and Institut Français?

There are a few events scheduled for this month already, but I thought I’d start off with one you might stand a chance of getting tickets to.

Why We Love Food

Date: Tuesday 21 May

Cookery and food programming have been a successful staple of schedules for as long as there has been TV. Reflecting the nations tastes and sensibilities over the years, it seamlessly moves from practical to flamboyant; competitive to journalistic, attracting broad and loyal audiences year after year.

One of the richest genres on television it’s launched celebrity chefs as famous as movie stars, instigated political change and gripped the nation with show stoppers and soggy bottoms.

So what is it about food on television that is so compelling? What are the must have ingredients for a successful food show and just how important is the food itself? In world of Netflix and Instagram how is the genre evolving and who will be the big names of the future?

To discuss we have Channel 4’s Head of Features & Formats, Sarah Lazenby, Managing Director of Shine TV (makers of MasterChef), Tanya Shaw, restauranteur, food writer and presenter and cook, Nisha Katona MBE and cook, bestselling author and champion of sustainable, nourishing food Melissa Hemsley.

BFI events

What TV’s on at the BFI in June? Including Poldark and Planet of the Daleks

Every month, TMINE lets you know what TV the BFI will be presenting at the South Bank in London

Only a few TV-related events at the BFI in June this year – maybe they expect us all to be outside having fun in the sun or something. However, there are a few of note.

Probably the most popular (only two tickets per person) will be the preview of the final series of Poldark, complete with Q&A with Aidan Turner, Jack Farthing and Luke Norris. But a close rival will be a screening of Doctor Who ‘classic’ Planet of the Daleks, complete with improved special effects for its Blu-Ray release – that’ll include a Q&A with companion Katy Manning.

Also airing as part of the BFI ‘Bitches’ season will be the complete series of The Life and Loves of a She-Devil and a discussion of Bad Girls that will take in Killing Eve, Clique and other shows. And as part of the LBGTQ+ BFI Flare season, there’ll be a screening of BBC docu-drama Stonewall. For details after the trailers and that She Devil.
