Action Comics #30

Only one comic is featuring the Amazon princess this week – boo! – and it’s Action Comics #30, which serves as a start to the ‘Superman Doomed’ crossover arc that’s going to be running through Action Comics, Superman/Wonder Woman, Superman et al over the coming month or so.

Unfortunately, DC’s timings are all a bit off, so Wondy only appears in one pane of the issue…

Wonder Woman flashback. Or flashforward

…in which Superman recalls that time when Harrow – the ghost soldier who can raises armies of the dead in a manner somewhat akin to Ares back in Wonder Woman – got her soldiers to try to kill Wonder Woman. You remember that, don’t you? You don’t? Oh, that’s because that’s happening next week in Superman/Wonder Woman #7. Not at all confusing, hey?

Oh well, that’s all folks!

What TV’s on at the BFI in May 2014

It’s time for our regular look at the TV that the BFI is showing, this time in May 2014. Edwardian drama is top of the bill this month – bet you didn’t see that coming? In fact, it’s the only thing on the bill, so savour it, since as well as a Q&A with Zoë Wanamaker, there are plays featuring Jeremy Brett, Sean Connery, Patrick Stewart, Ian Richardson, Jeremy Irons, André Morrell, Peter Vaughan, Annette Crosby, Timothy West, Anna Calder-Marshall and Colin Firth, to name but a few.

Filmed in Supermarionation

Network has completed a new film about the work of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson that’s going to be released in Autumn 2014. They were the minds behind Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet, Stingray, UFO, Space: 1999 et al, in case you don’t know.

Directed and produced by Stephen La Rivière (The Story Of Upstairs Downstairs, We Were ‘The Champions’), Filmed In Supermarionation is a screen adaptation of his book of the same name telling the story of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson’s TV productions using a wealth of previously unseen archive footage, new interviews with those involved, and clips from the shows themselves.

New Zealand hails King Joffrey #bringdowntheking

New Zealand's statue of King Joffrey

Look at this: it’s a statue of King Joffrey to publicise season four of Game of Thrones in New Zealand. It’s been erected in Aotea Square in Auckland (cue jokes about what it’ll do for Auckland traffic – NB all I know about Auckland I learnt from The Almighty Johnsons) and the plan is that if you Tweet about it, it’ll eventually be toppled (I hope that’s not a spoiler).

As the statue gains attention in real life and online, a large, medieval winch will be attached to the statue, with a rope around Joffrey’s neck, along with the appearance of the hashtag #bringdowntheking. From there, fans who’ve had enough of Joffrey’s nonsense can use the tag #bringdowntheking, and with each use of it, the rope will pull tighter around Joffrey’s head. All interested parties should head to www.bringdowntheking.com to see live webcams of all the action, see and send their own messages, as well as stay abreast of all the latest news and developments.

Looks like they’ve already put the winch in place, judging from the webcam:
