Things I learned from Mark Gatiss, Reece Sheersmith and Steve Pemberton last night

League of Gentlemen

I went to the League of Gentlemen In Conversation event last night at the BFI. In attendance were the full League. That might get a full write up at some point, if anyone’s interested (anyone?).

But before that, I thought I’d let you know a few juicy nuggets about their forthcoming (or not) projects, including Sherlock Holmes, Psychoville and the Lucifer Box adaptations.

US TV

Review: Flight of the Conchords 2×1

Flight of the Conchords

In the US: Sundays, 10pm, HBO
In the UK: BBC4 at some point within the next two months

Well, you can’t say I didn’t try. You begged, pleaded and even demanded that I try to watch and enjoy Flight of the Conchords when it came back. And I really wanted to.

See, I wasn’t much impressed by the first season, featuring those loveable New Zealand folk singers Jermaine and Bret and their inept manager Murray. There wasn’t really much diversity. Okay, the songs were good pastiches, but I’ve never been much of a fan of a spoof song.

My problem (which is mine) was that there was a joke. It was funny the first time. It’s just that every single other joke was the same joke. One of the trio says something, trying to sound bigger, more important or more street than he actually is, then the others spend time cutting him down to size. Oh, wait, there was another joke: it’s that New Zealanders are a bit inoffensive, a bit polite and nice, etc. Which is kind of related to the first one if you think about it.

Funny as that joke and a half was, it didn’t really keep me wanting to watch it again and again over the course of a whole season, so I gave up after a while.

Now it’s back, have they got a new joke?

Dick Heads

Dick Heads (from librarygirl): BAFTAs and a John

Richard Armitage at the BAFTAs again Richard Armitage at the BAFTAs Percy again

OMG! We’re building up a Dick Head backlog. The pressure must be eased, so only a couple of weeks in and we’re doing a mid-week Dick Head: lots, in fact. These are of Richard Armitage at the BAFTAs and there’s one of him as Percy as well (you know, one day I might be less than lazy and look that up on IMDB to find out which series it was from). John Thornton from North and South.

They were provided by librarygirl, BTW. Everyone give a big hello to librarygirl!

Since we’re doing well with Haikus, let’s keep it up, but love songs, sonnets, carols, rounds, a rondel, hexameter or anything else you feel like doing – even a humble caption – will also go towards increasing the joy that is Dick Heads.

Best Torchwood fan fic ever: The Adventure of the Three Gay Unicorns

Read it and weep, authors. You’ll never better it.

“Buddy,” I announced (to the unicorn), “I’m gonna shoot you in the face!”

BLAM! That was the sound of my gun going off! I LOLed as the bullet slammed into the face of the commander unicorn. Rainbowy gay brain-matter flew out in all directions. His space-diamond tiara smashed against the floor in pieces, a symbol of his broken leadership.
