Review: Doctor Who – 4×5 – The Poison Sky

Ah. Now that’s better. Finally, a decent two-parter and – miraculous though it might seem – one written by Helen Raynor at that.

After last week’s poorly paced but still reasonably good first part, I was expecting a lump of old rubbish for the second part, since that’s how it usually pans out. But hurroo, hurray, bar the occasional bit of dodgy dialogue, direction and acting, it was good.

Spiral (aka Engrenages) on DVD in October

I’m indebted to Scott at Love and Garbage for pointing out that Engrenages (aka Spiral aka ‘The good French TV show’) is coming out on DVD in October. Which is just marvellous.

Better news still is that the second series starts on Sunday in France, and should be coming to BBC4 later this year after a repeat of the first series; there’s also an unconfirmed rumour that series three is already being worked on. Give it a try: it’s worth it, I reckon.

The Colbert Report on FX in the UK tonight

Now there’s lush. FX, the UK TV channel that no one watches yet keeps picking good stuff to show, has bought the rights to The Daily Show spin-off The Colbert Report and is showing it at 11pm, starting tonight. It’s good and it’s funny (although you’ll probably have had to watch Bill O’Reilly on Fox News to really get the point of it) so catch it if you can – unfortunately, you’re probably not going to be able to watch it since it’s on Sky rather than Freeview. Ho hum.

A question of cinema etiquette

No one (okay maybe a few people) hates people who talk during movies more than I do. But, if you’re high up in the Odeon Leicester Square in the row behind one of the dividers and your wife isn’t tall enough to read the bottom of the screen when she’s sitting down, is it acceptable to read the subtitles to her?
