It’s “What have you been watching?”, your chance to recommend anything you’ve been watching this week

I keep forgetting I end up having a social life in December for a change. You may have noticed there was no Boxset Monday this week. Sorry about that. I’ve not even managed to get through an episode of Netflix’s Dark – perhaps because I kept having to switch it from “English (Dubbed)” to “German (Subtitled)”. Fingers crossed, I’ll have got to the end of by next Monday, but seeing as I’m away in Germany (how ironic) this weekend, I’m not sure I’ll manage it. Still, let’s see how it goes.

Elsewhere this week, I passed a fourth-episode verdict on Marvel’s Runaways (US: Hulu), but while there are some new shows on their way this week, including Happy! (US: Syfy), that was about all I could review since everything else new was boxsets. Hopefully, I’ll get round to them at some point, hey?

Third-episode verdict: No Activity (US: CBS All Access)

I think Patrick Brammall has a plan for world domination. I really do. He was certainly doing his best to take over Australia, with The Moodys and then Upper Middle Bogan. Then there was Glitch, in which he was the lead, but that didn’t stop him from cameoing in The Letdown.

But that wasn’t enough for him, oh no. Then he tried his luck in the US with appearances in Life In Pieces and New Girl, as well two pilots: Furst Born and a remake of Upper Middle Bogan (what would they have called that, I wonder?).

Apparently, that still wasn’t enough for Brammall, because he also decided that as well as acting in TV shows, he’d start writing them, too. His first effort was No Activity, an award-winning comedy cop show that’s so far run for two seasons on Australian streaming service Stan and is going to start its third season this week. He co-created it and starred in it, too.

Enough? Never. Not for the Bond villain-esque Brammall. He naturally took the show to America and is now starring in and co-writing an adaptation that is now airing on US streaming service CBS All Access.

It’s Thanksgiving in the US this week, after which it’s basically December and Christmas, so everything’s just about coming to a halt on the broadcast networks, ready for a January restart. That means there aren’t as many regulars to worry about and WHYBW can revert to its normal time of Tuesday – at least for this week.

That does mean I’ve also not quite had time to watch the latest episodes of Babylon Berlin, though, but I hope to have caught up by next week. Lovely wife is poorly and since I’m worried that Marvel’s Inhumans might actually kill her, we’ve held off watching the series finale, too.

However, even if the broadcast networks are taking a break, the cable and streaming services are carrying on apace, as is the rest of the world. Elsewhere, I’ve reviewed the first episodes of Future Man (US: Hulu) and There’s… Johnny! (US: Hulu), while Boxset Monday took in Marvel’s The Punisher (Netflix). I’ll be passing a third-episode verdict on Frankie Drake Mysteries (Canada: CBC; UK: Alibi) on Thursday, and reviewing the first episodes of Marvel’s Runaways (US: Hulu) and The Indian Detective (Canada: CTV; UK: Netflix) next Monday. Sisters (Australia: Ten) will have to be consigned to the “never going to happen” pile, though, I’m afraid.

We’re back on Wednesday again thanks to a massive surfeit of shows on Sundays and Mondays compared to the rest of the week (thanks, Babylon Berlin, Frankie Drake Mysteries, Travelers, Star Trek: Discovery and The Brave). Hopefully, that’s not rocked the bedrock of your beliefs about the universe.

Elsewhere, this week’s Boxset Monday was season 1 of 4 Blocks (Germany: TNT Series; UK: Amazon), and I’ve also reviewed the first episodes of the aforementioned Frankie Drake Mysteries (Canada: CBC; UK: Alibi) and Damnation (US: USA; UK: Netflix). I’ve not yet found time to review Sisters (Australia: Ten) (Narrator: he never will), which is now up to episode three, but I’m going to review the first episodes of both it and Future Man (US: Hulu) some time in the next week, and I might even have a whirl at No Activity (US: CBS All Access) if I have a mo – assuming the arrival of Marvel’s The Punisher (Netflix) on Friday doesn’t nuke my entire viewing schedule.

No other new TV shows this week and I’ve not watched any movies, either, which means it’s time to look at the tail end of the Fall season after the jump with the latest episodes of the regulars: Babylon Berlin, The Brave, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, Frankie Drake Mysteries, Mr Robot, SEAL Team, Star Trek: Discovery and Travelers.

We’ll also be looking at the season finale of Professor T, although you’ll have to wait until next week to hear what I think about the final episode of Marvel’s Inhumans, as lovely wife hasn’t mustered up enough enthusiasm to watch it yet. I can’t really blame her.

As mentioned yesterday, thanks to my having to deal with the antics of some customer service reps at Three (“Sure we can add that number to the new phone on your business account” – no, not my phone, that phone. Please don’t change my number) and Amazon (“Sorry, we’ve lost your order. It’s gone missing in transit.”), I didn’t have time to do “What have you been watching?” yesterday. But never fear, here it is.

Although I managed to review both of YouTube Red’s new shows, Ryan Hansen Solves Crimes on Television* and Lifeline, Boxset Monday took a bit of a back seat this week, since I was away at the weekend and BBC America decided it would be a chuffing good idea to air three episodes of the new season of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Agency (about which more later). Still, I’m now about halfway through season 2 of Stranger Things (Netflix), so Boxset Monday should be back on… Monday.

I had actually planned a replacement Boxset in case I didn’t manage to watch all of Stranger Things, but I only managed to watch two of the six episodes of 4 Blocks (Germany: TNT Serie; UK: Amazon), since it’s impossible to watch it on a commute (or even a weekend train journey next to a devout Muslim woman and her four-year-old daughter), given the number of scenes set in a strip club and/or porn cinema. Still, that’s in the pipeline, too.

Coming up in the next few days, a review of S.W.A.T. (US: CBS) and a preview of Berlin Babylon (Germany: Sky Deutschland; UK: Sky Atlantic). And maybe some other stuff.

But after the jump, I’ll be running through those new episodes of Dirk Gently, as well as the latest episodes of the regulars: The Brave, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Great News, Marvel’s Inhumans, Mr Robot, My Myself and I, Professor T, SEAL Team, Star Trek: Discovery, Travelers, and Will & Grace. On top of that, I also watched the first episode of new Australian ‘comedy’ The Letdown. All of that after the jump.
