What (more) TV’s on at the RTS in October? Including Jed Mercurio

Every so often, TMINE flags up what new TV events the Royal Television Society is holding around the UK

You really have to keep an eye on the RTS. For weeks, their events programme has included a session with ‘one of the country’s most high profile TV writers’. Nope. No details.

But now we know who it is, at last – it’s Jed Mercurio. Well, they weren’t wrong, were they?

In conversation with Jed Mercurio

Date: Thursday, October 15
Timings: 12.30pm
Location: Zoom

Jed Mercurio is the acclaimed writer who now also produces and directs. From this wide perspective, he’s able to tell us how writing really works in television today, and how writers can best enter the industry. Plus insights into how you can write compelling drama that keeps audiences wanting more.

Jed’s writing credits include Line of Duty, The Bodyguard, Bodies, Cardiac Arrest and The Grimleys. Hosted by William Gallagher in conjunction with the Writers’ Guild.

Quarantine viral videos: Line of Duty meets Unforgotten meets Life on Mars meets Midsomer Murders

There’s a lot of crossovers going on this viral video arranged by showrunner Jed Mercurio for charity Asks For Masks.

Most of the regular cast of Line of Duty (Adrian Dunbar, Martin Compston and Vicky McClure) show up, of course. But also joining them are various members of cop shows past and present:

  • Sanjeev Bhasker’s DI Sunny Khan from Unforgotten
  • Philip Glenister’s DCI Gene Hunt from Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes
  • Neil Dudgeon’s DCI John Barnaby from Midsomer Murders

Watch the video them give ’em some cash!

What TV’s on at the RTS in June? Including The South Bank Show live

Only one event that I’ve seen for June, but it looks pretty good.

The South Bank Show Live

Date: Thursday 27 June
Timings: 6.30pm for a 6.45pm start
Venue: Kings Place, 90 York Way, London N1 9AG

Join The South Bank Show‘s Melvyn Bragg in conversation with TV writers Jed Mercurio, Steve Pemberton, Reece Shearsmith and Heidi Thomas as they discuss the ideas and influences that inspire their work, how they go about writing their scripts and how they reach out to such substantial audiences.

Edited and presented by Melvyn Bragg, The South Bank Show is the longest-running arts show on British television and has showcased both high art and popular culture to a mass audience for over 40 years.

British TV drama is currently commanding huge audiences – and has become one of our main cultural talking points. The subjects of the new South Bank series are Jed Mercurio, the writer and showrunner of Line of Duty and Bodyguard; Jack Thorne*, writer of Skins, National Treasure, This Is England and the theatre production, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child; Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith, writers and stars of The League of Gentleman, Psychoville and the multi-award-winning Inside No. 9 and Heidi Thomas, creator and writer of Call the Midwife, who has also adapted Cranford and Little Women.

An evening not to be missed, this event will give an exclusive insight into how the best British TV drama writers work.  There will also be an opportunity for a Q&A session with the panel after the discussion.

*Please note that Jack Thorne is unavailable to attend this event due to the opening night of his new play.
