What time, TMINE? Including Nowhere Man, The Name of the Rose and Looking for Alaska

Every Friday, TMINE lets you know when the latest TV shows from around the world will air in the UK

The observant will notice that last week, there was no ‘What time, TMINE?’ That’s not because I forgot but because there were no new acquisitions or premiere dates announced last week – at least, none that I noticed or anyone told me about.

This week, however, we’ve had a few premiere dates announced. And a faux-acquisition…

Oops, I missed it

Netflix has acquired TV3 (Spain)’s Les de l’hoquei (The Hockey Girls). That got announced this morning, but it’s apparently been available since September 20. Oh well.

Anyway, if you like teenage Catalan roller hockey and want to watch something that “addresses the subject of female adolescence in an honest way, with the occasional daring touch,” The Hockey Girls might be for you.

Orange Wednesday: Mystery Road (2013), Goldstone (2016) and The Name of the Rose (1986)

It’s been noticeable over the past few weeks that basically the only movies TMINE has been watching of late have been superhero movies. This is somewhat lamentable for someone who used to edit film magazines, including the magazine of the Cambridge Film Festival.

This cannot hold. However, since I’ve just downsized my Cinema Paradiso subscription, I’ve had a few pennies spare. And one of the advantages of running TMINE is that you learn about things like Amazon Prime Channels and the BFI.

BFI woe

Now those of you who’ve tried the BFI’s iOS app will know it is literally the worst. It’s just awful. It’s got a rating of 1.3 out 5 on the App Store. It’s barely even worth calling it an app. I mean look – this is what you get when you launch it.

This is not an app. This is a travesty

Which is why I never bothered to use it.

A better choice

But if you read TMINE frequently – like I do – you’ll know that if you have an Amazon Prime subscription, you can also subscribe to the BFI Player channel within Amazon Prime for a mere £4.99/month and use the Amazon Prime app (also available on Roku et al) to watch all the movies, including downloading them for a commute.

This is much better
This is much better – on iOS

Lovely. Plus it seems to have a better catalogue and to be cheaper than Mubi.

Anyway, when I’m not lowering my IQ watching non-stop superhero movies, I’ll be endeavouring to plough my way through a big chunk of classic movies on the BFI Player for Orange Wednesday – probably starting with everything Kurosawa, but you never know, I might diversify.

This week’s Orange Wednesday

But since this is ostensibly a TV blog, I thought I’d start with a double bill related to a TV show: Mystery Road (2013) and its sequel Goldstone (2016), which led to one of last year’s top TMINE TV shows, Mystery Road.

However, since I only reviewed one movie last week, I probably owe you all an extra review. And since I’ve been watching Il nome della rosa (The Name of the Rose) of late, I decided to delve into my archive of movies and rewatch the 1986 movie version.

All three of those TV-related films after the jump.

This week’s reviews

With everyone celebrating that Jesus dying (and coming back again) for the past few days, it’s been another quiet one for TMINE. But elsewhere, I did review ABC (US)’s Bless This Mess and Orange Wednesday took in Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, so I’ve not been totally slacking.

The Bad Seed

What’s coming this week

A few new shows are coming up, and fingers crossed, I should finally be able to watch all of TVNZ 1’s The Bad Seed. Plus Orange Wednesday tomorrow will be taking in an Australian double-bill, Mystery Road and Goldstone, as well as a classic from the 80s, The Name of the Rose.

There’ll be other stuff, too.

Freeform's Marvel's Cloak and Dagger
Freeform (US)’s Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger

The regulars

While there may not have been a huge number of new shows, I’ve not been slacking when it comes to the regulars. I’ve now caught up with episodes 2-4 of The Twilight Zone, so I’ll be looking at that, as well as all the other regulars: Au Service De La France, Doom Patrol, Game of Thrones, The Good Fight, Happy!, Il Miracolo (The Miracle), Il Nome della Rosa (The Name of the Rose), The Magicians, Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger, The Orville, Star Trek: Discovery, Warrior, What We Do In the Shadows and Whiskey Cavalier.

Brace yourselves, though, because not only are The Magicians, Il Miracolo and Star Trek: Discovery leaving that list because they’ve just had their season finales, I’m also purging no fewer than five of the others, on the general grounds they’re not much cop any more.

See you in a mo for a veritable TMINE Night of the Long Knives!

This week’s reviews

TMINE took a few well-deserved days off at the end of last week, which means its usual prodigious output was a little more subdued than usual. But elsewhere, you can find a review of CBS (US)’s The Code, while last week’s Orange Wednesday took in Shazam! and Aquaman.

The Bad Seed

New shows

TVNZ premiered The Bad Seed at the weekend, so I’ll be trying to review that this week, as well as ABC’s Bless This Mess. Otherwise, with Easter holidays coming up, it’s liable to be another quiet one. Sorry!

Fox (US)'s The Orville
Fox (US)’s The Orville

The regulars

I’ll be trying to do a third-episode verdict on The Twilight Zone this week, so I’ll hold off on reviewing that for now. Meanwhile, The Orville‘s back off its holidays, so after the jump, I’ll be looking at that, as well as all the other regulars: DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Doom Patrol, The Good Fight, Happy!, Il Miracolo (The Miracle), Il Nome della Rosa (The Name of the Rose), The Magicians, Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger, Star Trek: Discovery, Warrior, What We Do In the Shadows and Whiskey Cavalier.

Shockingly, one of those is for the chop. But which?

And oh yes, another show made its return this week. You might not have noticed. I don’t think anyone’s mentioned it. What was it?

Oh yes. That was it. Game of Thrones.

See you in a mo!

This week’s reviews

It’s been another busy week for TV, but since the streaming services only served up Quicksand (Netflix) (yawn), there was no Boxset Monday this week. Sorry. However, TMINE did review the following fine – and not so fine – shows:

And for Orange Wednesday, I reviewed Donkeyote, John Wick – Chapter 2 and Justice League vs The Fatal Five.

It also meant that I had time to catch up with all the returning regulars, some shows I haven’t watched in a while, some new regulars and some movies.

The Code
CBS (US)’s The Code

New shows

There are some new shows just around the corner. However, I’m off on a jaunty little break from Thursday, so I don’t know how much time I’ll have to watch or review anything.

I’ll certainly have time to review The Code (US: CBS), though, and tomorrow’s Orange Wednesday will take in both Aquaman and Shazam!

Au service de la France (A Very Secret Service)
Arte (France)’s Au service de la France (A Very Secret Service)

The regulars

The Orville is still on holiday so join me after the jump for a look at the latest episodes of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Doom Patrol, The Good Fight, Happy!, Il Miracolo (The Miracle), Il Nome della Rosa (The Name of the Rose), The Magicians, Star Trek: Discovery, What We Do In the Shadows and Whiskey Cavalier. We also have the double-episode return of Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger to talk about. And I took in another episode of Au service de la France (A Very Secret Service), just because I could.

See you in a mo!
