Film reviews

This week’s movies have absolutely nothing in common, beyond the fact that they were both released this year and I watched them this week. So let’s not pretend I have a grand strategy, and let’s get right down to it with reviews of:

• The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (2019) – sequel to The Lego Movie, in which our plastic figurine heroes and heroines must fight a slightly lumpier plastic figurine menace from the planet Duplo.
• Shaft (2019) – sequel to Shaft (2000) and Shaft (1971), in which three generations of the Shaft family unite to fight the man.

It’s Thursday, so that must mean it’s movie time. I had high hopes to give you an ‘animation sequel week’, as Lovely Wife and I were watching The Lego Movie 2, but unfortunately we’re still only halfway through that, so it’ll have to wait until next week.

It’s Thursday, so that must mean it’s movie time. Despite the BFI channel on Amazon not offering downloads as previously advertised, I’ve still managed to watch Tokyo Story, which The Guardian describes as the fourth-best arthouse movies ever made.

And coincidentally, I’ve made it out the house to the cinema again to watch the fourth movie in the Men In Black franchise – Men In Black: International. Is it the fourth-best Men In Black movie ever made?

It’s movie time again. However, thanks to a combination of:

• Torrential downpours
• Cancelled trains
• The fact I’ll get mugged if I stand at a bus stop in Lewisham watching a movie on my iPad
• The fact I get sick on buses if I try to watch a movie on my iPad

I only had time to watch one movie this week. I did make a start on another, though, so spoiler alert: one of next week’s movies will be Tokyo Story (1953).

It’s Thursday so it’s time to go to the movies with TMINE. Once again, I’ve managed to maintain discipline and go superhero free. I’ve even watched one – perhaps even two – modern classics of very different genres. However, in common with last week, one of them (unexpectedly, this time) features Keanu Reeves, so is that a new theme?

• Always Be My Maybe (2019): Randall Park and Ali Wong grow up next door to one another but their lives take very different paths. Will they realise they’re made for each other? And will Park punch Keanu Reeves in the process?
• First Man (2018): Ryan Gosling takes us to the moon and back in this partial biopic of Neil Armstrong.
