BAFTA’s already looking ahead to the summer, so although there’s bound to be more events to add to June and July’s roster, we have our first August event already.

Preview screening – 4Stories: On the Edge series 2 + Q&A with key creatives

On the Edge, Channel 4’s BAFTA nominated anthology of short films is back for a second series. The films, which were shot in Wales, were developed though the 4Stories initiative, and written and directed by the most exciting new talent in the UK. They look at the lives of three diverse characters trying to find their place in the world.

Following the screening there will be a Q&A with key creatives.

Candice is a young vulnerable woman who desperately wants some independence and has moved into her own flat. Kems is a young man, down on his luck, sleeping on his mate Olly’s sofa to get away from his alcoholic dad. A chance meeting leads to an intimate friendship, but when Olly calls in a favour, Kems’ feels under pressure to take advantage of Candice. Have they all underestimated her?

A romantic comedy about mental illness. Rev and girlfriend Alex are passionately in love but Rev suffers from anxiety and depression which he tries to control with therapy, medication and mindfulness. Things come to a head at Alex’s sister’s wedding weekend when Rev is confronted by her families prejudice. Will the pressure be too much to bear? Can Rev and Alex’s relationship survive? And will he ever be able to master a golf swing in front of his father in law?

Remi, a vibrant plus-size British Nigerian woman is looking for love, and for a job, and generally just trying to navigate her impending adulthood. But Remi has father issues and uses food to eat her emotions. Can she find a place for herself in this world?

After a bit of a breather, TMINE’s regular round-up of BAFTA TV things is back again with a couple of events, one at the end of June, another in July.

I’m not sure why they’re doing a ‘premiere’ of series 2 of Keeping Faith, given S4C has just finished airing the Welsh language version Un Bore Mercher, but it’s there if you want it.

A preview of the first episode of new BBC One drama followed by a Q+A with writer Levi David Addai, actors Jill Halfpenny and Babou Ceesay, and director Lewis Arnold.

Written by BAFTA-nominated writer Levi David Addai (Damilola, Our Loved Boy); starring BAFTA-nominated Babou Ceesay (Damilola, Our Loved Boy) and Jill Halfpenny (Three Girls); and directed by Lewis Arnold (Broadchurch), Dark Mon£y tells the fictional story of The Mensahs, an ordinary working-class family from North London whose youngest son has recently finished filming a major Hollywood movie role.

But Manny (Ceesay) and Sam’s (Halfpenny) world is shattered when Isaac reveals he was abused whilst out in America by a renowned filmmaker. Although guilt-ridden, the family decide to accept a substantial pay-off to keep silent, believing the money will help start a new life, enable them to heal and avoid the publicity hell of pressing charges against a celebrity. They are wrong. Damage runs deep, and the price of taking the money may be too high.

Also joining the cast are Rebecca Front (War and Peace), Susan Wokoma (Chewing Gum), Olive Gray (Home from Home), Ellen Thomas (Teachers), Arnold Oceng (The Good Lie), Joseph May (Resident Evil), Rudi Dharmalingam (Our Girl) and Gary Beadle (EastEnders).

Produced by The Forge Entertainment, Dark Mon£y is a 4×60’ drama series. Executive Producers are George Faber and Mark Pybus for The Forge, Lucy Richer for BBC One and Levi David Addai. Producer is Erika Hossington.

What TV’s on at the BFI in July? Including This Way Up, The Orchid House and 90s TV

Every month, TMINE lets you know what TV the BFI will be presenting at the South Bank in London

It’s a slightly eclectic and odd selection of TV shows at the BFI this July. How do they pick ’em? Well, there’s actually a session going behind the scenes at the BFI that explains their TV selections, so you best ask them then.

This month, though, the main feature is a nostalgic look at 90s TV. I say ‘TV’, but it’s mostly Screen One and Screen Two showings so borderline movies; however, there is a session dedicated to 90s kids TV shows, featuring some of the cast and creators, to look forward to.

On top of that, there’s a preview of Channel 4’s This Way Up, possibly including a Q&A with Aisling Bea and Sharon Horgan; and a day long showing of Channel 4’s adaptation of Phyllis Shand Allfrey’s The Orchid House.

What TV’s on at the Southbank Centre in May? Including Neil Gaiman: Good Omens

Other than the events at the BFI, The Southbank Centre isn’t one of the venues TMINE regularly monitors for TV-related fare.

However, I’ve just noticed that tomorrow, to coincide with the release of Good Omens on Amazon on Friday, the man-god Neil Gaiman is discussing said show, which is based on the novel he wrote with Terry Pratchett.

Neil Gaiman: Good Omens

The master storyteller reflects on reinventing the modern classic Good Omens for the screen, joined by stars of the series David Tennant and Michael Sheen.

Before he died in 2015, Sir Terry Pratchett asked Neil Gaiman to make a television series of the internationally beloved novel they wrote together thirty years ago.

Ahead of the series launching on Amazon Prime Video and the BBC, hear from Gaiman himself about adapting the novel as well as being the showrunner for the series, which stars David Tennant, Michael Sheen, Jon Hamm and Miranda Richardson, to name but a few.

For one night only, Gaiman speaks about bringing his original collaboration with Pratchett to life, the differences between page and screen, how the characters continue to surprise him and why this wicked comedy about Armageddon remains relevant today.

Chairing the conversation is journalist, broadcaster and writer Kirsty Wark.

TV Preview: Good Omens + Q&A

The end of the world is coming, which means a fussy Angel (Michael Sheen) and a loose-living Demon (David Tennant) who’ve become overly fond of life on Earth are forced to form an unlikely alliance to stop Armageddon.

Good Omens follows the duo who have lost the Antichrist, an 11-year-old boy unaware he’s meant to bring upon the end of days, forcing them to embark on an adventure to find him and save the world before it’s too late… 

The Amazon Original, based on the beloved book by Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman, is directed by Douglas Mackinnon (Sherlock – The Abominable Bride) and also stars Jon Hamm, Nick Offerman, Jack Whitehall, Miranda Richardson, Adria Arjona, Michael McKean, Mireille Enos, among many others. 

Good Omens is produced by Amazon Studios, BBC Studios, Blank Corporation and Narrativia.

This screening will preview two episodes of the new series and will be followed by a Q&A with director Douglas Mackinnon.
