What TV’s on at the BFI in December 2019? Including Dracula and Missing Believed Wiped

It’s Christmas!

Well, only in BFI calendar-land, which occupies its own time zone.

As usual, there’s an eclectic but truncated mix of shows, with Christmas typically removing not one week but three from most organisations’ ability to do any work. But there is some good stuff:

  • A preview of Steven Moffatt and Mark Gatiss’s Dracula, complete with Q&A with Steven Moffat, Mark Gatiss and Dracula
  • A preview of this year’s Ghost Story for Christmas, complete with Q&A with Mark Gatiss. But not Dracula or Steven Moffat
  • A preview of Cinderella: After Ever After + Q&A with David Walliams. But not Mark Gatiss
  • A pantomime season featuring lots of TV pantomimes.
  • This year’s Missing Believed Wiped season.

That’s not bad, is it? What do you mean “Oh no it isn’t”?

What TV’s on at the BFI in October/November 2019

We’re at that slightly odd time of the year when the BFI decides to have a major film festival or something, so there’s not enough happening for a regular programme for two months.

Yes, it’s October/November 2019, folks.

That means there’s pretty slim pickings TV-wise for the next month or two, but what there is is pretty good:

  • A preview of the forthcoming His Dark Materials at the BFI IMAX, with intro by Dafne Keen and Ruth Wilson
  • A preview of the forthcoming War of the Worlds (with unnamed special guests)
  • A complete screening of Rock Follies, complete with Q&A with Rula Lenska, Charlotte Cornwell, Howard Schuman and Andy Mackay
  • A free celebration of Game of Thrones (with unnamed special guests)
  • A showing of a restored and extended version of Doctor Who story The Curse of Fenric, with Q&A with Sophie Aldred and Andrew Cartmell
  • A talk on the rebirth of the TV musical, including a screening of Our Gay Wedding: The Musical

That’s not bad, is it?

What TV’s on at the BFI in September 2019

After the traditional August lull, the BFI is back in full force for September, with a pretty epic line-up. There is a stonking season of Monty Python sessions, including a weekend airing every episode, as well as pre- and post-Python highlights such as Q5, Fawlty Towers and Rutland Weekend Television.

On top of that, there’s a showing of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and Doctor Who story Mindwarp, complete with Q&A with Colin Baker and Nicola Bryant, a preview of the forthcoming Temple with Mark Strong, and a preview of World on Fire. As if that weren’t enough, there’s a celebration of Not the Nine O’Clock News with John Lloyd and an episode of Porridge.

What TV’s on at the BFI in August? Including Queer as Folk, This Life, The Word, Dark Crystal and Sanditon

It’s August at the BFI, and as happens every year, the schedule thins out to take account of everyone – audience and staff – being on their holibobs.

But there are a few things to look forward to. Following on from July’s 90s season, there are events dedicated to Queer as Folk, This Life and The Word, featuring both cast and crew. And there are previews of ITV’s forthcoming Jane Austen adaptation Sanditon and Netflix’s Dark Crystal prequel, Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.

What TV’s on at the BFI in July? Including This Way Up, The Orchid House and 90s TV

Every month, TMINE lets you know what TV the BFI will be presenting at the South Bank in London

It’s a slightly eclectic and odd selection of TV shows at the BFI this July. How do they pick ’em? Well, there’s actually a session going behind the scenes at the BFI that explains their TV selections, so you best ask them then.

This month, though, the main feature is a nostalgic look at 90s TV. I say ‘TV’, but it’s mostly Screen One and Screen Two showings so borderline movies; however, there is a session dedicated to 90s kids TV shows, featuring some of the cast and creators, to look forward to.

On top of that, there’s a preview of Channel 4’s This Way Up, possibly including a Q&A with Aisling Bea and Sharon Horgan; and a day long showing of Channel 4’s adaptation of Phyllis Shand Allfrey’s The Orchid House.
