Very excited about Altered Carbon, as the book is a personal favourite. Hope they get it right. 🙂

Hm. It's not really my sort of thing but I had a friend lend me a copy so I could read it; it was all right, but surely it's almost the very definition of unfilmable? The whole point of it is internal experience, of exactly the kind of thing that can be done in prose but doesn't translate at all to drama.

(For instance, the whole point of the climax, when he does the-thing-that-isn't-allowed, will be totally impossible to do on film, won't it?)

  • Andy Butcher

Yeah, I think it'll be challenging, but I've been forced to revise my opinion of what's unfilmable so many times now that I'm not sure it'll be impossible. So I live in hope. 🙂

  • Mark Carroll

I'll be cautiously optimistic too. It's relatively recently that I came across the book, actually. I'll at least be curious to see what they do to it.

    Sounds interesting, any examples?

I guess the ones that immediately spring to mind are mostly technical challenges – Lord of the Rings, Watchmen, Sin City and the like – and so not directly applicable.

Perhaps more relevant are things like Hannibal, Mr Robot and Limitless. Not in the sense of me thinking they were unfilmable, but rather that all have done some interesting stuff with internal experience.

I do think that getting across the idea of what an Envoy is will be very tricky. The novel itself struggles with this, and it's handled better in the sequels. But then as cool (and disturbing) as the Envoy concept is, I'm not sure that you really need the audience to 'grok' that in order to make a kickass cyber-noir show.
