The Heroes Dilemma: a request for help

Posted on May 3, 2007 | 8 comments |

This is for those of you already watching Heroes: I need help. My wife hasn't seen any episodes of Heroes, despite the exhortations of me and my brother-in-law, who also loves it.

They're sitting there, waiting to be watched, but currently unloved.

Now, if I show her the first episode, she's going to be bored, because it's not great, at least not relative to the other episodes. And then she'll never watch any of the other episodes ever.

But I can't show her a really top-quality episode to hook her because that'll ruin all the surprises and won't make much sense.

So what should I do? Any suggestions?

Well, I hooked my reluctant husband by having him commit to watching a few episodes and then making a decision on it. Mostly, it's because some storylines (HRG) are generally more interesting than others (DL/Micah) for us. If you have to do a single episode, I'd say go for "Homecoming" and pause to give the characters some introductions. It's early enough to not spoil some of the major other revelations later, yet it's pretty exciting and deals with many of the better/more interesting storylines.

Tie her down and force her to watch it from the beginning. Don't give her any say in the matter.

    You coddle the woman! LOL

That is a puzzle, Rob. I don't think testimonials from those of us who love the show will work if the word of those she knows and loves carries no weight.

Even so, I will say this and you can pass it on: I saw this week's 'Lost' and the two-part 'Doctor Who' last night and the total wasn't enough to knock me for the loop that Monday's 'Heroes' did. I think all TV shows this week will suffer in comparison.

Maybe you should just ask her to go with the flow for the first three episodes, and reserve judgment until she finished them. I would think she'd be hooked by then.

If not, maybe you should have married your brother-in-law... LOL

"If not, maybe you should have married your brother-in-law..."

That was the original idea and there were many hints that was going to happen. But eventually it was decided that would ruin my chances of getting a part in The Sarah Connor Chronicles, so we backed away from it.

Have I been watching too much Heroes?

All good ideas, anyway, and I'm liking them so far.

Incidentally, there may be a reason the two-part Doctor Who didn't knock you for a loop and it isn't Heroes. Lost, however, was very good, but I suspect a certain ennui with the show is creeping in and we're going to have to learn to fall in love with it, all over again.

Show her a sequence of clips of the non-too-spoilerish variety, preferably with a fair bit of Hiro ('cause girls almost uniformly seem either to want to mother him or to do other things to him, depending on individual tastes).

I'd be surprised if there weren't something suitable on YouTube.

Ennui... wouldn't that have been a lovely name for a girl in the Addams Family?

My enthusiasm for 'Lost' hasn't flagged; each succeeding week since its return this season has built upon my excitement from the week before (aside from the tattoo episode burp).

And I did enjoy the Daleks episodes, especialy from a Toobworld p.o.v. - I'll be able to link them to Edith Keeler, 'The Chronicle', 'Buffy', and - why not? - 'Seinfeld'!

It really was just a case this week of paling in comparison to "Five Years Gone"/"String Theory" (no idea why the title was changed).

British Sci Fi have been showing them 3 at a time.. that's a better way to get her into it as then she'd see Hiro and the policeman who can read thoughts.. (fat Keanu?) and the multiple personality woman.. .man my special skill must be forgetfulness.. but you see what I mean.. if she still can't get it after 3 then likelyhood is she won't get it.. or at least won't bve arsed!

If it turns out that she does watch at least three, do you think it possible she might make a guest appearance here to let us know what she thought, one way or the other?

I think it might be fun to read her opinions on it....

"do you think it possible she might make a guest appearance here to let us know what she thought"

I might let you know what she thought, if she ever does watch it, but I doubt you will hear from her directly.

All good plans, by the way guys. Think we'll have to make our way through the season eight box set of Charmed before she'll contemplate it though. Should give me enough time to devise the perfect strategy.
