What (more) TV’s on at the RTS in October? Including Jed Mercurio

Every so often, TMINE flags up what new TV events the Royal Television Society is holding around the UK

You really have to keep an eye on the RTS. For weeks, their events programme has included a session with ‘one of the country’s most high profile TV writers’. Nope. No details.

But now we know who it is, at last – it’s Jed Mercurio. Well, they weren’t wrong, were they?

In conversation with Jed Mercurio

Date: Thursday, October 15
Timings: 12.30pm
Location: Zoom

Jed Mercurio is the acclaimed writer who now also produces and directs. From this wide perspective, he’s able to tell us how writing really works in television today, and how writers can best enter the industry. Plus insights into how you can write compelling drama that keeps audiences wanting more.

Jed’s writing credits include Line of Duty, The Bodyguard, Bodies, Cardiac Arrest and The Grimleys. Hosted by William Gallagher in conjunction with the Writers’ Guild.

Talking Pictures

Talking Pictures October 2020: The Mind of Mr JG Reeder, Burke’s Law, Armchair Theatre, Dick Powell Theatre, Dick Barton: Special Agent and Reilly: Ace of Spies

An occasional look at what classic TV shows Talking Pictures (Sky 328 | Freeview 81 | Freesat 306 | Virgin 445) is going to be airing soon

It’s hard keeping up with Talking Pictures. They’re sending me a (slightly inconsistent) Excel spreadsheet every week now and I’m having to use my mad table powers to find all the new TV shows they have in the schedule – which is often a lot. Who says no skills are required to run TMINE?

Anyway, a full rundown of the new shows I’ve spotted (because you never know when I might have missed one), starting from today and running right up until November 1 in a mo: The Mind of Mr JG Reeder, Burke’s Law, Armchair Theatre, Dick Powell Theatre, Dick Barton: Special Agent and Reilly: Ace of Spies.

Some of these have been on Talking Pictures before, but it never hurts to list them again, does it?

Talking Pictures September 2020: Callan, Enemy at the Door and Midnight is a Place

An occasional look at what classic TV shows Talking Pictures (Sky 328 | Freeview 81 | Freesat 306 | Virgin 445) is going to be airing soon

It’s been a while since the last Talking Pictures rundown, but since I got as far as the end of August, we’ve only missed a couple of weeks of possible new shows, you’ll be glad to hear. In fact, we only missed a couple of episodes…

Callan - Suddenly At Home

Callan

Starts: Wednesday, September 15, 4am (weekdays)

This was last on Talking Pictures in March 2019, so I don’t need to explain again how brilliant it is. But you do need to watch it if you’ve not seen it before – Talking Pictures is beginning tonight/tomorrow morning with a selection of the rarely seen black and white episodes.

Enemy at the Door

Airs: Sundays, 9pm

Sorry, this has already started, but it’s only two episodes in, with the third to air on Sunday, so you haven’t missed too much.

During the Second World War, the inhabitants of Guernsey, one of the Channel Islands, try to cope with the German occupation.

Midnight is a Place

Starts: Saturday, September 26, 9am

Based on the Joan Aiken historical melodrama. Lucas Bell is lonely. To be an orphan at Midnight Court in 1842 is not pleasant.

Fancy going face to face with some German TV writers?

TMINE doesn’t usually cover US events, but since the whole world has gone teleconferencing event crazy, we’ve opened our minds to new possibilities. As has the US.

US trade magazine Deadline, with which readers of TMINE’s Daily Global TV News will by now be intimately familiar, has started organising TV events via Zoom and it’s got a very interesting international TV event lined up for this week, with some very interesting speakers. And as far as I know, all you have to do is RSVP to attend.

Face to face with German writers: serious about stories

Date: Thursday, September 10, 5pm

Deadline sits down with three of Germany’s hottest writers to find out how the country has put itself at the forefront of high-end European drama production. From How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast) to Dark, Germany is making TV content that not only delivers in the local market but appeals to large diverse audiences around the world, particularly through VOD platforms. Behind any great series is a great writer – we’ll discuss how our panellists are crafting stories that cross borders.

Speakers

  • Christian Ditter – showrunner/writer/director, Biohackers, How To Be Single
  • Hanno Hackfort – writer, 4 Blocks, You Are Wanted
  • Philipp Käßbohrer – showrunner/writer/executive producer, How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast)

What TV’s on at the RTS in September and October? Including Think You Know About TV?

Every so often, TMINE flags up what new TV events the Royal Television Society is holding around the UK

It’s been a bit of a break since the previous rundown of RTS events, so there’s a bumper crop to work our way through this week, some this month, some next. In fact, one’s tomorrow.

There’s a quiz, there’s something worthy with Richard Curtis and then there’s the Baird Lecture. Full details are after the jump…
