The Twilight Zone

The Almeida theatre enters The Twilight Zone this December

Well colour me surprised – the Almeida Theatre in north London is putting on some adaptations of classic episodes of The Twilight Zone from this December. I wonder who’ll play Rod Serling?

Between light and shadow, science and superstition, fear and knowledge is a dimension of imagination. An area which we call the Twilight Zone.

Adapted by Anne Washburn (Mr Burns) and directed by Olivier Award-winner Richard Jones, this world premiere production of the acclaimed CBS Television Series The Twilight Zone lands on stage for the first time in its history. Or its present. Or its future.

Stage magic and fantasy unite as the ordinary becomes extraordinary.

The stories chosen are by Rod Serling, Charles Beaumont and Richard Matheson, so that should narrow things down – but only a little bit.

The production runs from 5th December 2017 to 27th January 2018, with a post-show discussion with members of the company on 11th January. Tickets cost £10-£48 and available here to the public from July 27.

Salford Sitcom Showcase

The line-up for BBC Comedy and BBC North’s 2017 Salford Sitcom Showcase

BBC Comedy Commissioning and BBC North are running their Salford Sitcom Showcase again this year on Thursday 27 July. Comedian and broadcaster Ted Robbins will host the event, spotlighting new comedies in development. There will be a range of events on the programme, from a live staged reading of a new project in development starring Sian Gibson (Car Share) to a screening of Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer’s ‘new’ show, Vic & Bob’s Big Night Out, to a chat with TV’s Philomena Cunk, Diane Morgan.

This year BBC North, BBC Comedy Commissioning and BBC Writersroom are announcing the introduction of a new bursary for Northern female comedians. Aimed at writers/performers, the Caroline Aherne Bursary for Funny Northern Women will award £5,000 to the successful applicant to enable them to fund future development, alongside the guidance of an experienced BBC commissioning editor. The Bursary will be launched at the Salford Sitcom Showcase and full details on how to apply will be available on the BBC Writersroom website from 27 July.

Details of the shows audiences will be able to see on the day are after the jump.

Jodie Whittaker as Doctor Who

Question of the week: what do you think of Jodie Whittaker being cast as the 13th Doctor Who?

Unless you’re some kind of ‘sports fan’ (whatever they are) then the big news of yesterday was that actress Jodie Whittaker joins a long line of actors with awkwardly spelt names to become the 13th/14th official TV Doctor Who.

She’s already done an interview with the BBC web site, if you want to find out more about her, the casting process and important things like whether she’s picked out a costume yet.
