Question of the week: 6Music - thumbs up or thumbs down?

Ooh, a radio question. That's novel.

For the benefit of overseas readers, 6Music is a BBC radio station that's available on the Internet or on DAB radios (you don't have those either). It covers "new music" (something close to US indie music) and other genres that appeal to musophiles.

And the BBC is about to close it. The reasons given are that it competes with commercial radio stations (maybe, but only in terms of the listeners, not in terms of content), it costs too much (it only costs a few million pounds to run), it doesn't have enough listeners (although it has enough apparently to compete with commercial radio stations, except it doesn't. Square that circle if you can), and the resources will be used elsewhere (true enough).

To replace it, the current plan is to provide a "Radio 2 Extra" – just as ITV2 gives related content to ITV1 programmes as well as original content of its own, so the new 6Music would do the same for Radio 2.

So this week's question is:

Why are the BBC really closing 6Music? Is it a good thing or a bad thing? Do you care? Will you listen to the replacement? Or is all this a storm in a teamcup, you can't get this DAB thing anyway, and to hell with Internet radio?

For the advanced reader: repeat but for the closing of the Asian Network.

As always, leave a comment with your answer or a link to your answer on your own blog.

Today's Joanna Page: Bleak Expectations (the pilot)

Well, I mentioned it last week, but thanks to Mark at The British Comedy Guide we have word from Mark Evans himself about who was in the Bleak Expectations pilot and why Joanna Page wasn't in the series itself:

"Yes, she played Pippa in the pilot. And was excellent. The reason she was not in the series itself was entirely down to availability... It would have been excellent to have had her in the series, but luckily we got the wonderful Susie Kane to play Pippa as she has done fabulously ever since.

The non-broadcast pilot was actually March 2006... then it was a whole year before the first series. Anthony Head wasn't actually in that pilot - Tom Hollander played Mr Sourquill and Mr Gently Benevolent. Again, it was entirely an availability thing for him not doing the series; again we luckily got the fantastic Mr Head. I think both he and Mr Hollander are superb actors.

James Bachman was still Harry Biscuit, even in the pilot (doubling also with Servewell, Sir Philip's butler). Thomas was played by Kim Wall; in the first series he became Mark Perry. Again, all availability. I'm a huge Kim Wall fan.

We also had Sophie Thompson as Agnes, Pip's mother. (In the series played by Celia Imrie.) Once again it's the whole availability thing. I think Sophie was in Eastenders at that point... but may be wrong. We were very lucky - every time we lost someone from the pilot cast, we found someone just as great to replace them in the series. Oh, and Poppy was played by Kellie Bright, who turned up recently in small parts in Horne and Corden and who is/was Kate Aldridge in The Archers. She, too, was unavailable for the series. Everyone got very, very successful and busy after the pilot. Coincidence? Or just great excuse making so they didn't have to be in it?"

So there you have it. However, since it's Today's Joanna Page, have another picture of Joanna Page filming the third series of Gavin & Stacey:

Review: Torchwood - Asylum

In the UK: Wednesday 1st July, 2.15pm, Radio 4. Available for download until 7th July.
I feel violated. Violated and stupid. Don't I learn? Am I no better than invertebrates or small yappy dogs? Couldn't I tell that another Torchwood Radio 4 play was going to make the last one look like a work of art?

Apparently not, because I actually sat down and listened, live, to Torchwood - Asylum.

Well that's 45 minutes I'm not getting back.
(continued)

Safety Catch: 12 hours earlier than planned

Today's Joanna Page is a public safety announcement. Or at least a public Safety Catch announcement.

Owing to a slight misapprehension on my part, the first episode of the second series of Safety Catch isn't on at 11.30pm tonight, as it was during the first series, but is actually on at 11.30am this morning. So that's 12 hours earlier than planned, although it does mean I've only given you an hour and a half's notice.

On the plus side, it does mean that today, you can wake up with Joanna Page and go to bed with her, too.

The online Dragons' Den dragons interviewed

Dragons' Den, BBC2's investment reality show, is very, very popular. Not content with having four 'Dragons' to vet business propositions and sink their own money into ventures, the show now has two online Dragons, whom you can pitch to on the Dragons' Den web site. In fact, you can view some pitches already.

Here, Dominic Byrne, more famous to radio listeners for producing Chris Moyles' breakfast show but who's the online version of Evan Davis for this, interviews the two online Dragons, Julie Meyer and Shaf Rasul:
