You wait ages for a media related blog to write something about the Adventure Game, then two come along at once. Typical.

And no discussion of adventure game influenced tv shows would be complete without a mention of Knightmare.

I absolutely loved The Adventure Game, one of my favourite programmes when I was at Primary School (in fact I have to forward this entry to my sister as we used to watch together.) I enjoyed it so much that I invented a complex version of the Vortex game for me and my schoolfriends. You had to cross the playground following the lines of the paving stones and there were various characters and features from The Adventure Game that might get in your way - not just the Vortex, but the Crystal Ball, the Green Cheese Bun, the Argon and the Drogna. And I still often think about a particular puzzle where you had to name things that had double letters in them. My sister and I solved that one way before they did. Happy days. Bring back The Adventure Game!

What the hell?!? That is the HARDEST set of puzzles ever, it's on a par with Numberwang - were they really supposed to guess all those things?

I remember enjoying this show very much, but the only bits that have stuck in my mind are the vortex and that the answer to riddles was often Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain. Nice review.

Fred Harris was a brainy sort (he was a teacher, member of Mensa, etc), so it's entirely possible they expected him (rather than 'er off Liver Birds) to get the puzzles. However, I think they had some faulty logic for the first series:

1) People will spend hours trying to solve puzzles in computer adventure games
2) Therefore people will enjoy spending hours trying to solve puzzles in a real life adventure game.
3) Therefore people will enjoy watching people spending hours trying to solve puzzles in a real life adventure game

They soon discover the problem and have to start cutting and fading in and out of the adventure during the bits when the celebs are stuck. You'll fade out and then when they fade back, you'll find two of the Argonds have arrived and are chatting away with them and bits of the set will have been dismantled. It's almost surreal.

Later on, the puzzles get easier and the Argonds spend more time with the celebs offering hints when it seems like it's still too much of a problem.

In my version of the game, I think if you landed on Green Cheese Roll you could see where the Vortex was. Crystal Ball probably showed you where everything was, and the other two were more sinister. But I can't really remember. My sis just reminded me how scared we both were of the Vortex. Not nice being lost in space.
