Gosh, I have to say this was VERY timely. I've been getting a bit flustered about what will happen as/when my DVD player conks out (its not THAT young) as we're in no state to fully upgrade at the moment.

This carefully argued post on how you got round things was just what I needed to reassure me... whilst I hope that in the meantime my player keeps working.

You have to keep in mind that this is written by someone who still has VHS videos...

Our DVD player is dead and I will NEED a DVD player next week (6 evenings of indulging in DVD watching, you betcha it's a need).

So, technical question time (I may email you as well): we only have a standard old-fashioned TV with a single SCART and nothing more advanced than that. This currently means that the DVD, video and Freeview boxes feed through a single SCART connector box. Monies are also a tad tight - nothing excessive but it does mean we have to ask the question before diving in with the debit card. So we haven't got a fancy-dan TV, though we do hope to upgrade before the end of the year (TV recommendations btw? still the Sony Bravia 26": it's my preference at the mo... I digress)

Therefore:
1) should I still buy the philips DVD player?
2) should I leave getting the HDMI cable till we need it since that seems to be just for HD TV improved picture??

Yep, I'd still endorse the Phillips and the Bravia. You can skip buying the HDMI cable since it won't work with your tele. However, when you do go high def, it'll be worth getting one since you won't have to bother with config - HDMI also allows control signals to be sent down the cable, so the tele will know what resolution to use. More lovely still, the control goes both ways, so you can use the Bravia's energy saving mode to power down HDMI-connected devices to save energy. I think. That's what it says it's doing, anyway.

"The last little nugget worth mentioning about the DVP 5960 is it has a USB 1.1 port on the front so that you can connect a camera or flash drive and browse its contents on the tele. I haven't tried that yet, but it's nice to know it's there."

Put your DiVX files on a USB stick, slap it in the port, press 'USB' on the remote and whaddayaknow, no need for CDRs or DVDRs anymore! ;-)
...the file names are still truncated, however :-(
