Keeley Hawes' Alex is far more of an entertaining character than the buttoned-down Sam.

And yet I found her the most alienating element of the show. Too posh, too knowing, too much of a smart-arse.

The real success of LoM -- when it was successful -- was in allowing viewers to take guiltless pleasure in the kind of stuff that makes for less comfortable viewing when not presented as pastiche-with-a-knowing-wink. There wasn't enough of that in AtA last night.

She's more entertaining than Sam, but she is a bit of an arse at this point. But I'm giving her some slack since she's basically got the same script as Sam had in the first episode and doing the same things. Let's see how she fares in later weeks.

Rob: "And, of course, The A-Team only aired in the US in 1983."

There's also the fact that the Rozxy Music song at the end didn;t come out until 1985.

I'm wondering if those kind of mistakes are deliberate hints that it's all Alex's dream (or even still Sam's dream - or as someone I know suggested, both this and LoM are Gene's dreams).

Rob: "Only Gene was the A-team!"

No, wasn't Gene leading the A-Team, rather than calling himself it? So Chris and Ray were provided with the usual A Team powers of bullet evasion.

And very handy that proved too :)

Could be, although we don't really need hints that it's a dream. Plus I read an interview where the producers said they were trying very hard to only pick songs from 1981. That could either mean sloppiness or deliberate mistakes.

I could believe the rationale of it being Gene's dream. It does explain why he doesn't age and also looks the same in different people's dreams. And also why the dream continues even when Sam/Alex are asleep or have fainted or aren't present in the scene.

I think the saddest thing of all about Ashes to Ashes is that we won't ever now get Station to Station, or whatever the 1976 version of the series would have been. Gene Hunt's view on the Sex Pistols, Thatcher as Tory party leader, Healey and the IMF, the National Front and a whole lot of other stuff would have been fascinating.

As I live in Australia I haven't yet watched Ashes to Ashes. I think I'll fall into that category of LOM viewers who just can't make the journey. Moving from the 'seventies into the 'eighties was hard enough when it actually happened, let alone having to do it all over again...
