Playing catch up: iPlayer on the Wii

Posted on April 16, 2009 | 6 comments |

Wii iPlayer home page

I've only had a Wii for five months* and the option's been there for a year, apparently, but it's news to me that you can watch the BBC's iPlayer on the Wii, so I thought I'd belatedly pass the word.

I haven't tested it yet, and it's not as good quality as you can get on a PC, since the Wii has an old version of Flash, but all the same, much better to be able to watch it on your TV than huddled round a computer.

* Bought at my wife's insistence, I would point out, since games consoles and working from home don't mix unless you're a games journalist/professional games player

The children and my husband bought me a Wii for my last birthday. I don't think it was intended for me (-:. I certainly get the least use out of it and it has to rate as my all time most hated birthday present (especially since we got Super Bloody Mario Kart). However, now I have a use for it that I like. If I can only work out how the fuck to get it to play Iplayer. I have enough trouble playing Wii sports...

Well, there's always the Wii Fit, although we haven't tried that. And we do like the Brain Training Academy.

Apparently, all you have to do to get the iPlayer to work (instructions at the link in the story, IRC), is to go to the Internet channel (which you might need to install) and then go to www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer. Which sounds easy enough to me.

Actually I am being a bit unfair. I did enjoy Wii tennis last summer, but Super Mario Kart brought out my worst competitive tendencies and I thought I might have a heart attack. It didn't help that the seven year old told me to hold the steering wheel horizontal rather then upright...

Not sure we have the internet channel, but it sounds like it will be worth installing. Maybe even I can manage that, seriously technologically challenged as I am...

    Cheers Rob,

Powered up my Wii last night, fired up the internet channel, and navigated to www.bbc.co.uk/iPlayer - worked a treat.

The interface works well even if the video size/quality isn't great - but it did the job.

Not sure I'd ever use it though... :)

    Chris

however channel 4 catchup doesn't as it requires a newer version of flash. Hopefully nintendo will provide this soon?!
