Meme of the week: Who would you be and why?

Posted on April 22, 2009 | 12 comments |

After a week's break for Easter, meme of the week is back with a (hopefully) simple question, to be answered in the comments below or on your own blog:

If you could be any TV character, who would you be and why?

Since I was a kid, I wanted to be Buddy Sorrell, the Morey Amsterdam character on 'The Dick Van Dyke Show'.

Buddy told jokes for a living; he got to sleep on the job; and he made fun of a much taller bald guy.

I may not be the "Human Joke Machine" that he was, but I'm not exactly known for my serious side. However, I do get to snooze on the job - it's called lunch hour. (I don't need that time to actually eat lunch.)

I do know a much taller guy who's bald, but I consider him a friend and would never insult him the way Buddy did to Mel. Besides, I think I mentioned he's much taller.

And on the job, I basically dress like Buddy, with the loosened tie and the unbuttoned vest....

Er, Dexter. I kid! Don't call the men in white coats! I was considering Jack Bauer (but he gets zero credit, and there's too much personaly cost involved.) So, I'll probably go for The Doctor, 'cos his life looks like a lark and he makes sure everyone knows who saved the day. And you get to live a long, long time.

I feel like I am Dexter anyway, minus the illegal details.

Sheldon in Big Bang Theory. It would be nice to be good at my job and be so happy in my self. I can't think of any other tv character as lacking in grief/worries/concerns as him.

Cappie in Greek is pretty amazing as well. A genius and instantly likable, easy-going, has an amazingly great time and is always ready with hilarious quips.

Abigail "Abby" Sciuto from NCIS -- she's just adorably fiesty!

Ooh this is quite a tricky one for me. Can think of dozens of fictional heroines I'd like to be, but not so sure about TV. As a kid without a doubt I'd have said Purdey. I liked the idea of having very long legs with which to kick badasses. This probably reveals that I have a subliminal blonde wish and should by rights be in Rob's elevator.

I guess nowadays I'd have to go for one of the Doctor's companions - probably Rose before RTD ruined her, but maybe Donna because she was so fab.

Although I'd also like to be Annie from Being Human, particularly when she got feisty.

And if I were in MI5 I'd very much like to be Ros from Spooks.

OTOH, with my fictional heroine hat on, I'd go for Jennifer Ehle's Elizabeth for entirely predictable reasons...

When I was little I wanted to be Mrs Peel, though now I'd like a gander at Mr Peel before I commit to anything. As a teenager, I wanted to be Maggie in Northern Exposure. To bring it up to date, I had a hankering after being Lorelei Gilmore. All for the feistiness. Looks like we women all want to be feisty.

Also, Joan Holloway in Mad Men, but transported to the 21st century, so I could have the body, the clothes and the intelligence, but none of the sexist bullshit (and indoor smoking).

Oh yes. Marie am with you on the feistiness thing. Have a problem thinking of fesity women on TV. TV's problem, I think...

I'm still thinking of mine. The trouble is that most heroes have conflicts and generally crap lives, so it's hard for me to go, "Yes, I'd like to be like them!"

Having said that, John Simm in State of Play, Carl Kolchak or Julian Rhind-Tutt's character in Hippies could be fun. Or Jones the Steam in Ivor the Engine.

Is Greek good? I gave it a pass because of its ABC Family/frat house baggage, but it seems to have stayed the course.

Oh dear, I need to give an opinion on Greek...

It's about American college kids mainly within the Greek system. There is one sorority and two fraternities (and sometimes we see dorm kids outside of the system). The activities that they get up to vary from the absolutely insane (often making movie references) to absolutely tedious (usually about the sorority politics) but they both feel in the spirit to real college experiences. All the characters feel likely (and act their age) and despite seeming to be cliches on the outside, there is always a bit of a twist to them.

Basically, it's a load of 18-22 year olds acting like 18-22 year olds and I far prefer that to insane angst and drama brought on by ridiculous love polygons. It's got pop culture references a-plenty. Likeable characters on the whole (and Cappie is a fantastic standout character in the show). It's capable of being very funny, very sweet and very engaging. It's not dark or complicated and it probably says something that I only watch it in the summer when the tv schedules are less packed. But when I do watch it, I find it hopelessly addictive and race through the episodes.

I don't understand where exactly you are coming from with ABC Family baggage (I loved the Kyle XY and that is the only other show I know on that channel). With regards to frat house baggage, I was pretty amazed with how sympathetic and real the houses felt (given that the show is a comedy most of the time) and I kind of like the look at these scarily organised surrogate familes.

"I don't understand where exactly you are coming from with ABC Family baggage (I loved the Kyle XY and that is the only other show I know on that channel)."

I loved Kyle XY, too, but Lincoln Heights was a bit arse, Three Moons Over Milford was appalling and I found The Middleman to be just a scattergun of pop culture references, desperately firing away in the hope that something would stick. And my memory is long enough that I still begrudge it for once being owned by Pat Robertson.

But it's undoubtedly improving, which is why I'm inclined to give Greek a try, rather than dismissing it out of hand.
