Barack Obama does The West Wing

Posted on January 16, 2009 | 8 comments |

Everyone knows the debt the Santos storyline on The West Wing owes to Barack Obama. But what would the titles of The West Wing look like with the incoming Obama administration?

Oh look, here's a handy YouTube vid to illustrate:

    That's a thing of beauty.

There's somebody missing. Who could it be?

If you mean Hillary - and I'm not entirely sure of the exact roles in the Obama cabinet, which ones require Senate confirmation, etc - then

    a) Hillary hasn't been confirmed yet as Secretary of State, has she?
    b) There was no Secretary of State character in the title sequence of The West Wing, although there were a few Secretaries over the years, and I think these are all supposed to be the equivalents to the ones shown in the titles. But it's tricky because Stockard Channing got into the title sequence around the same time as Janel Maloney so it's probably not an exact match to a particular season's titles, particularly since we don't know who Obama's bag man is yet.

I do mean Hillary. Not quite confirmed yet but endorsed by the Senate so surely just a formality?

Anyway, you could well be right in your analysis but I suspect that some people really, really hate Hillary so much that the sight of her in the West Wing titles would make them want to vomit. I am not one of those people.

    (a) Hillary was confirmed yesterday.
    (b) The West Wing titles were all White House staffers, not cabinet members.

Judging by the amount of fawning done by various Senators at the hearing, I would say "Yes".

Weird, isn't it, and you could well be right. I was a Hillary supporter during the Democrat campaigns, particularly since Obama seemed a little bit out of his depth at that point and Hillary had some reasonable ideas. It was all a bit bloody, but the over-reactions on both sides is quite insane.

I switched to McCain after that, who ran a good campaign to get his nomination and seemed to have better ideas in most areas. Then I saw his presidential campaign and thought, "Oh dear" - even before Sarah Palin turned up - and switched to Obama who seemed much improved by that point.

I'm still sorry Hillary didn't make it, though, and it would have been nice to have her as VP, even though that would have given her less to do and she'd have probably been planning how to overthrow Obama by day two.

    A) Cool
    B) Good point (bar Mr and Mrs Pres), although the White House Chief of Staff (Leo) is cabinet-rank.

Ah, The West Wing. God, it really was very good wasn't it? How long before the reality destroys the myth again? (much as Bush coming in fubar-ed the original series)
